Book Wilfred Bion and Literary Criticism

Download or read book Wilfred Bion and Literary Criticism written by Naomi Wynter-Vincent and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-08 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wilfred Bion and Literary Criticism introduces the work of the British psychoanalyst, Wilfred Bion (1897–1979), and the immense potential of his ideas for thinking about literature, creative process, and creative writing. There is now renewed interest in Bion’s work following the publication of his Complete Works but the complexities of his theory and his distinctive style can be forbidding. Less well-known than Freud or Lacan, the work of Wilfred Bion nevertheless offers new insights for psychoanalytic literary criticism and creative writing. For newer readers of his work, this book offers an engaging introduction to several of Bion’s key ideas, including his theory of thinking (the ‘thought without a thinker’), the container/contained relationship, alpha-function; alpha-elements, beta-elements, and bizarre objects; K and -K; the Grid, O, and the caesura. It also offers a way in to Bion’s astonishing and challenging experimental work, A Memoir of the Future, and explores the impact of his devastating personal experiences as an officer during the First World War. Each chapter of Wilfred Bion and Literary Criticism draws on one or more specific aspects of Bion’s theory in relation to creative texts by Sigmund Freud, Stevie Smith, B.S. Johnson, Mary Butts, Jean Rhys, Nicholas Royle, J.G. Ballard, and Wilfred Bion himself. The first full-length study to explore the potential of Bion’s ideas for literary criticism, Wilfred Bion and Literary Criticism introduces his complex and extensive work for a new audience in an accessible and engaging way, and will be of great interest to scholars of creative writing, literary criticism, and psychoanalysis.

Book The Analytic Field and its Transformations

Download or read book The Analytic Field and its Transformations written by Giuseppe Civitarese and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Analytic Field and its Transformations presents a collection of articles, written jointly by the authors in recent years, all revolving around the post-Bionian model of the analytic field - Bionian Field Theory (BFT). Going hand-in-hand with the ever-growing interest in Bion in general, analytic field theory is emerging as a new paradigm in psychoanalysis. Bion mounted a systematic deconstruction of the principles of classical psychoanalysis. His aim, however, was not to destroy it, but rather to bring out its untapped potential and to develop ideas that have remained on its margins. BFT is a field of inquiry that refuses a priori, at least from its own specific perspective, to immobilize the facts of the analysis within a rigid historical or intrapsychic framework. Its intention is rather to bring out the historicity of the present, the way in which the relationship is formed instant-by-instant from a subtle interplay of identity and differentiation, proximity and distance, embracing both Bion's rigorous, and his radical, spirit.

Book What Social Workers Need to Know

Download or read book What Social Workers Need to Know written by Marion Bower and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-08-23 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social work deals with the heavy end of human difficulties such as cruelty, self-destructiveness, and severe and enduring mental health problems. How do social workers make sense of the emotional difficulties which come with the realities of practice? Understanding our clients is the best way of dealing with complex situations and avoiding burnout and stress. The contributors to this book argue that psychoanalysis provides a theory of development and behaviour capable of formulating a realistic model for understanding emotional difficulties and disturbances in both clients and ourselves. The chapters demonstrate a way of thinking for the practitioner that can be used in all situations. The book examines in detail some of the difficult and disturbing conversations that social workers have with clients of all ages. It provides a psychoanalytic framework for understanding circumstances which may be puzzling, stressful or frightening, and a theory whose value for many social work problems is well underpinned by research evidence. Written by senior practitioners who are all still working in the front line, this book puts complex real life experiences into words, to help the social worker become a more effective practitioner.

Book Psychoanalysis as a Journey

Download or read book Psychoanalysis as a Journey written by Franco Borgogno and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together twelve of Franco Borgogno's essays written since 1981. Revised and brought up to date for this edition, they give the reader an idea of the development of his philosophical and working stance, as he has progressed from being a trainee to becoming a training analyst. Psychoanalysis as a Journey is a title which perfectly mirrors the essays it contains: the reference is to the journey of insights in the minds of the pioneers of psychoanalysis, Freud in particular, but also Ferenczi, Heimann, Bion; the journey made by their legacy in psychoanalytic institutions, the journey made by the analyst as he grows, learns and applies what he has learnt, and also the journey of the patient. A highly stimulating and thought-provoking volume. It is quite rare to come across a book that combines sound theoretical and clinical psychological arguments with generous disclosure of the progression and development of an author's thought. What this volume offers, however, is just such an itinerary, or rather journey, and moroever one that is strictly psychoanalytic. Different levels of this journey emerge as we read. The first is that of Freud's theoretical development, from his first intuitions that led to the creation of psychoanalysis, to the key works of his maturity. Another concerns the vicissitudes of every psychoanalytic process as manifested in the analyst-patient interaction. A further level of this journey is the evolution of the analytic thought of Franco Borgogno himself, as reflected in the sequence of papers he presents to us here and the highly involving theoretical odyssey they prove to be.
