Book Biomembrane Electrochemistry

Download or read book Biomembrane Electrochemistry written by Martin Blank and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In October 1986, the Office of Naval Research initiated a five-year program for electrochemical research on biological and model membranes. The program explored the physical basis of biological sensory and energy-transducing processes by focusing on the electrochemical properties of integral membrane proteins (i.e., channel structures) associated with ion-transport processes. The major research areas covered were interfaces and lipid layers, channels (structure and function), and signal transduction. This volume contains papers from that program as well as some related studies. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electrochemistry has been undergoing significant transformations in the last few decades. It is now the province of academics interested only in measuring thermodynamic properties of solutions and of industrialists using electrolysis or manufacturing batteries, with a huge gap between them. It has become clear that these, apparently distinct subjects, alongside others, have a common ground and that they have grown towards each other, particularly as a result of research into the rates of electrochemical processes. Such evolution is due to a number of factors, and offers the possibility of carrying out reproducible, dynamic experiments under an ever-increasing variety of conditions with reliable and sensitive instrumentation. This has enabled many studies of a fundamental and applied nature, to be carried out.

Book Comprehensive Treatise of Electrochemistry

Download or read book Comprehensive Treatise of Electrochemistry written by Peter Horsman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1.1. Definition of Terms-Thrombosis, Thromboembolic Disease, Atherosclerosis, and Blood Clotting The terms heart attack or myocardial infarction are more commonly used than thrombosis. The infarct-muscle destruction is simply the end result and thrombosis is the real cause of the heart attack. Thrombosis may be defined as the process of formation of a coalescent or agglutinated solid mass of blood components in the blood stream. Thrombi formed in either arteries or veins often cause occlusion in the vascular system and prevent blood flow. Obstruc to the blood vessel usually occurs at the site where the thrombi deposit. tion Furthermore, thrombi may break loose, travel through the circulating blood stream, and cause obstruction at some distal point of narrowing elsewhere. The mass or thrombus that moves is referred to as an "embolus." The two phenomena are lumped together under the term thromboembolic disease. Thrombosis that reduces blood supply to the heart is the primary factor in heart attacks.

Download or read book Bioelectrochemistry III written by Martin Blank and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains aseries of review papers related to the lectures given at the Third Course on Bioelectrochemistry held at Erice in November 1988, in the framework of the International School of Biophysics. The topics covered by this course, "Charge Separation Across Biomembranes, " deal with the electrochemical aspects of some basic phenomena in biological systems, such as transport of ions, ATP synthesis, formation and maintenance of ionic and protonic gradients. In the first part of the course some preliminary lectures introduce the students to the most basic phenomena and technical aspects of membrane bioelectrochemistry. The remaining part of the course is devoted to the description of a selected group of membrane-enzyme systems, capable of promoting, or exploiting, the processes of separation of electrically charged entities (electrons or ions) across the membrane barrier. These systems are systematically discussed both from a structural and functional point of view. The effort of the many distinguished lecturers who contributed to the course is aimed at offering a unifying treatement of the electrogenic systems operating in biological membranes, underlying the fundamental differences in the molecular mechanisms of charge translocation.

Book Equations of Membrane Biophysics

Download or read book Equations of Membrane Biophysics written by N Lakshminarayanaiah and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Equations of Membrane Biophysics provides an introduction to the relevant principles of thermodynamics, kinetics, electricity, surface chemistry, electrochemistry, and other mathematical theorems so that the quantitative aspects of membrane phenomena in model and biological systems could be described. The book begins by introducing several phenomena that arise across membranes, both artificial and biological, when different driving forces act across them. This is followed by separate chapters on thermodynamic principles related to properties of dilute aqueous electrolyte solutions along with a review of the principles of electrostatics, electrochemical principles, Fick's laws of diffusion, and the rate theory of diffusion; the quantitative aspects of the electrochemistry of solutions and membranes, and the quantitative relations between charges and electrostatic potentials related to surfaces and interfaces; and membrane theories pertaining to electrical potentials arising across a variety of membranes. Subsequent chapters deal with steady-state thermodynamic approaches to several transport phenomena in membranes; tissue impedance, cable theory, and Hodgkin-Huxley equations; and fluctuation analysis of the electrical properties of the membrane.

Book Inclusion Aspects of Membrane Chemistry

Download or read book Inclusion Aspects of Membrane Chemistry written by T. Osa and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no doubt that the field of artificial membrane transport using synthetic ionophores has advanced remarkably in the past 15 years due primarily to the synthesis of new ionophores. Even though the theoretical framework substantially predated this activity, the merging of theory with transport experiment has often been sketchy. The purpose of this outline has been to examine key examples to illustrate the underlying principles and to suggest how experimental variables dominate the results obtained. To a very good approximation the assumption of a "diffusion" regime is often justified, is easily confirmed experimentally and provides a clear framework for exploitation of the inherent selectivity of a given ionophore. Thus for synthetic chemists who wish a "quick and nasty" experiment to examine the question of selectivity, the recipe is clear: a mixture containing all ions of interest in a standard experiment for each ligand of interest using a moderately stirred (100-200 rpm) cell and analysis of the mixture produced on the OUT side of the cell at a fixed, small extent of transport. Together with duplicates and controls, this modest set of experiments will place the results on an unambiguous footing from which clear conclusions about each ionophore's characteristics are readily obtained. For those with more detailed interests in the transport process the demands are correspondingly higher.
