Book Models of Horizontal Eye Movements Part II

Download or read book Models of Horizontal Eye Movements Part II written by John Enderle and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-06-01 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are five different types of eye movements: saccades, smooth pursuit, vestibular ocular eye movements, optokinetic eye movements, and vergence eye movements. The purpose of this book is focused primarily on mathematical models of the horizontal saccadic eye movement system and the smooth pursuit system, rather than on how visual information is processed. A saccade is a fast eye movement used to acquire a target by placing the image of the target on the fovea. Smooth pursuit is a slow eye movement used to track a target as it moves by keeping the target on the fovea. The vestibular ocular movement is used to keep the eyes on a target during brief head movements. The optokinetic eye movement is a combination of saccadic and slow eye movements that keeps a full-field image stable on the retina during sustained head rotation. Each of these movements is a conjugate eye movement, that is, movements of both eyes together driven by a common neural source. A vergence movement is a non-conjugate eye movement allowing the eyes to track targets as they come closer or farther away. In this book, a 2009 version of a state-of-the-art model is presented for horizontal saccades that is 3rd-order and linear, and controlled by a physiologically based time-optimal neural network. The oculomotor plant and saccade generator are the basic elements of the saccadic system. The control of saccades is initiated by the superior colliculus and terminated by the cerebellar fastigial nucleus, and involves a complex neural circuit in the mid brain. This book is the second part of a book series on models of horizontal eye movements. Table of Contents: 2009 Linear Homeomorphic Saccadic Eye Movement Model and Post-Saccade Behavior: Dynamic and Glissadic Overshoot / Neural Network for the Saccade Controller

Book Digital Image Processing for Ophthalmology

Download or read book Digital Image Processing for Ophthalmology written by Xiaolu Zhu and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-05-31 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundus images of the retina are color images of the eye taken by specially designed digital cameras. Ophthalmologists rely on fundus images to diagnose various diseases that affect the eye, such as diabetic retinopathy and retinopathy of prematurity. A crucial preliminary step in the analysis of retinal images is the identification and localization of important anatomical structures, such as the optic nerve head (ONH), the macula, and the major vascular arcades. Identification of the ONH is an important initial step in the detection and analysis of the anatomical structures and pathological features in the retina. Different types of retinal pathology may be detected and analyzed via the application of appropriately designed techniques of digital image processing and pattern recognition. Computer-aided analysis of retinal images has the potential to facilitate quantitative and objective analysis of retinal lesions and abnormalities. Accurate identification and localization of retinal features and lesions could contribute to improved diagnosis, treatment, and management of retinopathy. This book presents an introduction to diagnostic imaging of the retina and an overview of image processing techniques for ophthalmology. In particular, digital image processing algorithms and pattern analysis techniques for the detection of the ONH are described. In fundus images, the ONH usually appears as a bright region, white or yellow in color, and is indicated as the convergent area of the network of blood vessels. Use of the geometrical and intensity characteristics of the ONH, as well as the property that the ONH represents the location of entrance of the blood vessels and the optic nerve into the retina, is demonstrated in developing the methods. The image processing techniques described in the book include morphological filters for preprocessing fundus images, filters for edge detection, the Hough transform for the detection of lines and circles, Gabor filters to detect the blood vessels, and phase portrait analysis for the detection of convergent or node-like patterns. Illustrations of application of the methods to fundus images from two publicly available databases are presented, in terms of locating the center and the boundary of the ONH. Methods for quantitative evaluation of the results of detection of the ONH using measures of overlap and free-response receiver operating characteristics are also described. Table of Contents: Introduction / Computer-aided Analysis of Images of the Retina / Detection of Geometrical Patterns / Datasets and Experimental Setup / Detection of the\\Optic Nerve Head\\Using the Hough Transform / Detection of the\\Optic Nerve Head\\Using Phase Portraits / Concluding Remarks

Book The Routledge Handbook of Mechanisms and Mechanical Philosophy

Download or read book The Routledge Handbook of Mechanisms and Mechanical Philosophy written by Stuart Glennan and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-06 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientists studying the burning of stars, the evolution of species, DNA, the brain, the economy, and social change, all frequently describe their work as searching for mechanisms. Despite this fact, for much of the twentieth century philosophical discussions of the nature of mechanisms remained outside philosophy of science. The Routledge Handbook of Mechanisms and Mechanical Philosophy is an outstanding reference source to the key topics, problems, and debates in this exciting subject and is the first collection of its kind. Comprising over thirty chapters by a team of international contributors, the Handbook is divided into four Parts: Historical perspectives on mechanisms The nature of mechanisms Mechanisms and the philosophy of science Disciplinary perspectives on mechanisms. Within these Parts central topics and problems are examined, including the rise of mechanical philosophy in the seventeenth century; what mechanisms are made of and how they are organized; mechanisms and laws and regularities; how mechanisms are discovered and explained; dynamical systems theory; and disciplinary perspectives from physics, chemistry, biology, biomedicine, ecology, neuroscience, and the social sciences. Essential reading for students and researchers in philosophy of science, the Handbook will also be of interest to those in related fields, such as metaphysics, philosophy of psychology, and history of science.

Book Hybrid Plasmonics for Energy Harvesting and Sensing of Radiation and Heat

Download or read book Hybrid Plasmonics for Energy Harvesting and Sensing of Radiation and Heat written by Mina Shiran Chaharsoughi and published by Linköping University Electronic Press. This book was released on 2020-02-03 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The special optical properties of subwavelength metallic structures have opened up for numerous applications in different fields. The interaction of light with metal nanostructures leads to the excitation of collective oscillations of conduction-band electrons, known as plasmons. These plasmon excitations are responsible for the high absorption and high scattering of light in metallic nanostructures. High absorption of light and the subsequent temperature increase in the nanostructures make them suitable as point-like heat sources that can be controlled remotely by light. The research presented in this thesis focuses on the development and studies of hybrid devices that combine light-induced heating in plasmonic nanostructures with other materials and systems. Particular focus is put on hybrid organic-inorganic systems for applications in energy harvesting as well as in heat and radiation sensing. Harvesting energy from light fluctuations was achieved in a hybrid device consisting of plasmonic gold nanodisk arrays and a pyroelectric copolymer. In this concept, fast and efficient light-induced heating in the gold nanodisks modulated the temperature of the pyroelectric layer, which could be used to extract electrical energy from fluctuations in simulated sunlight. Integrating plasmonic nanostructures with complementary materials can also provide novel hybrid sensors, for monitoring of temperature, heat flux and radiation. In this thesis work, a hybrid sensor was designed based on the combination of a plasmonic gold nanohole layer with a pyroelectric copolymer and an ionic thermoelectric gel. The gold nanohole arrays acted both as broadband light absorbers in the visible to near-infrared spectral range of the solar spectrum and also as one of the electrodes of the sensor. In contrast to the constituent components when used separately, the hybrid sensor could provide both fast and stable signals upon heat or radiation stimuli, as well as enhanced equilibrium signals. Furthermore, a concept for heat and radiation mapping was developed that was highly sensitive and stable despite its simple structure. The concept consisted of a gel-like electrolyte connecting two separated metal nanohole electrodes on a substrate. Resembling traditional thermocouples, this concept could autonomously detect temperature changes but with several orders of magnitudes higher sensitivity. Owing to its promising sensing properties as well as its compatibility with inexpensive mass production methods on flexible substrates, such concept may be particularly interesting for electronic skin applications for health monitoring and for humanoid robotics. Finally, we improved the possibilities for the temperature mapping of the concept by modifying the structure from lateral to vertical form. Similar to the lateral device, the vertical temperature sensor showed high temperature sensitivity and stability in producing signals upon temperature changes.

Book The 15th International Conference on Biomedical Engineering

This book was released on 2013-11-18 with total page 998 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the processing of the 15th ICMBE held from 4th to 7th December 2013, Singapore. Biomedical engineering is applied in most aspects of our healthcare ecosystem. From electronic health records to diagnostic tools to therapeutic, rehabilitative and regenerative treatments, the work of biomedical engineers is evident. Biomedical engineers work at the intersection of engineering, life sciences and healthcare. The engineers would use principles from applied science including mechanical, electrical, chemical and computer engineering together with physical sciences including physics, chemistry and mathematics to apply them to biology and medicine. Applying such concepts to the human body is very much the same concepts that go into building and programming a machine. The goal is to better understand, replace or fix a target system to ultimately improve the quality of healthcare. With this understanding, the conference proceedings offer a single platform for individuals and organizations working in the biomedical engineering related field to gather and network with each other in so doing create the catalyst for future development of biomedical engineering in Asia.
