Book Reliability Robustness and Resilience of Complex Supply Chain Systems

Download or read book Reliability Robustness and Resilience of Complex Supply Chain Systems written by Abdulaziz T. Almaktoom and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite numerous studies that consider service level, reliability, robustness, and resilience rates of individual factories in a supply chain system (SCS), the interactions among connected factories and the impact of those interactions on overall supply chain reliability, robustness, and resilience have been rarely studied. Moreover, ensuring the reliability, robustness, and resilience while considering uncertainties induced by various sources, such as transportation delay and manufacturing process variability, in individual factories and routes is a highly complex task. An extensive review of the current literature on global SCS design and analysis shows an urgent need to understand the concept of factory-to-factory supply chain systems, and to develop methods and techniques to efficiently measure and design them. Thus, this research addresses different imperative needs for SCSs, which have been structured into six research thrusts: (1) measurement of SCS service level (SL), (2) assurance of system SL robustness in complex supply chain networks (SCNs), (3) cost-efficient robust global SCS design under uncertainty, (4) measurement and optimization of reliability in complex SCSs, (5) measurement of resilience of multi-level SCSs, and (6) measurement and analysis of reliability, resiliency, and robustness of SCSs.

Book Modeling Bioenergy Supply Chains

Download or read book Modeling Bioenergy Supply Chains written by Yuanzhe Li and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biofuels have been promoted by governmental policies for reducing fossil fuel dependency and greenhouse gas emissions, as well as facilitating regional economic growth. Comprehensive model analysis is needed to assess the economic and environmental impacts of developing bioenergy production systems. For cellulosic biofuel production and supply in particular, existing studies have not accounted for the inter-dependencies between multiple participating decision makers and simultaneously incorporated uncertainties and risks associated with the linked production systems. This dissertation presents a methodology that incorporates uncertainty element to the existing integrated modeling framework specifically designed for advanced biofuel production systems using dedicated energy crops as feedstock resources. The goal of the framework is to support the bioenergy industry for infrastructure and supply chain development. The framework is flexible to adapt to different topological network structures and decision scopes based on the modeling requirements, such as on capturing the interactions between the agricultural production system and the multi-refinery bioenergy supply chain system with regards to land allocation and crop adoption patterns, which is critical for estimating feedstock supply potentials for the bioenergy industry. The methodology is also particularly designed to incorporate system uncertainties by using stochastic programming models to improve the resilience of the optimized system design. The framework is used to construct model analyses in two case studies. The results of the California biomass supply model estimate that feedstock pretreatment via combined torrefaction and pelletization reduces delivered and transportation cost for long-distance biomass shipment by 5% and 15% respectively. The Pacific Northwest hardwood biofuels application integrates full-scaled supply chain infrastructure optimization with agricultural economic modeling and estimates that bio-jet fuels can be produced at costs between 4 to 5 dollars per gallon, and identifies areas suitable for simultaneously deploying a set of biorefineries using adopted poplar as the dedicated energy crop to produce biomass feedstocks. This application specifically incorporates system uncertainties in the crop market and provides an optimal system design solution with over 17% improvement in expected total profit compared to its corresponding deterministic model.

Book Models and Algorithms to Solve a Reliable and Congested Biomass Supply Chain Network Designing Problem Under Uncertainty

Download or read book Models and Algorithms to Solve a Reliable and Congested Biomass Supply Chain Network Designing Problem Under Uncertainty written by Sushil Raj Poudel and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation studies two important problems in the field of biomass supply chain network. In the first part of the dissertation, we study the pre-disaster planning problem that seeks to strengthen the links between the multi-modal facilities of a biomass supply chain network. A mixed-integer nonlinear programming model is developed to determine the optimal locations for multi-modal facilities and bio-refineries, offer suggestions on reliability improvement at vulnerable links, production at bio-refineries, and make transportation decision under both normal and disrupted scenarios. The aim is to assist investors in determining which links’ reliability can be improved under specific budget limitations so that the bio-fuel supply chain network can prevent possible losses when transportation links are disrupted because of natural disasters. We used states Mississippi and Alabama as a testing ground for our model. As part of numerical experimentation, some realistic hurricane scenarios are presented to determine the potential impact that pre-investing may have on improving the bio-mass supply chain network’s reliability on vulnerable transportation links considering limited budget availability. In the second part of the dissertation, we study the impact of feedstock supply uncertainty on the design and management of an inbound biomass co-firing supply chain network. A two-stage stochastic mixed integer linear programming model is developed to determine the optimal use of multi-modal facilities, biomass storage and processing plants, and shipment routes for delivering biomass to coal plants under feedstock supply uncertainty while considering congestion into account. To represent a more realistic case, we generated a scenario tree based on the prediction errors obtained from historical and forecasted feedstock supply availability. We linearized the nonlinear problem and solved with high quality and in a time efficient manner by using a hybrid decomposition algorithm that connects a Constraint generation algorithm with Sample average approximation algorithm and enhanced Progressive hedging algorithm. We used states Mississippi and Alabama as a testing ground for our study and conducted thorough computational experiments to test our model and to draw managerial insights.
