Book Biology of Turbellaria and some Related Flatworms

Download or read book Biology of Turbellaria and some Related Flatworms written by Lester R.G. Cannon and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turbellaria, the mainly free-living flatworms, and some of their parasitic relatives, are among the simplest of the metazoa and, as such, provide ideal models for a wide range of fundamental studies. The 60 contributions to Biology of Turbellaria and some Related Flatworms cover taxonomy and phylogeny, biogeography and genetics, ecology and behaviour, Anatomy and ultrastructure, development and regeneration, genes and sequences, and neurophysiology. Biology of Turbellaria and some Related Flatworms is the most recent compilation in the series published in Hydrobiologia since 1981, covering research on these flatworms assembled by the world's leading authorities on the group. Audience: These papers present the advanced student and serious researcher with up to date information on an important, but often neglected group whose place in the animal kingdom demands greater attention.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turbellarian platyhelminths (or, as they are known now among cladistic systematists, free-living Platyhelminthes) comprise a widely distributed assemblage of lower worms found in marine, freshwater, and even occasionally in terrestrial habitats. The phylum Platyhelminthes may be more widely known for its parasitic members since the major parasitic groups of the tapeworms, flukes, and their relatives are more speciose and have greater impact on everyday human life; but the turbellarians are more diverse and, as inhabitants of virtually any aquatic habitat, are more widespread as well. Many of the lower turbellarians are rather simple in morphology and have served as models for ancestors of the Bilateria, i.e., the bulk of the animal phyla. Others are quite complex organisms, especially in the morphology of their reproductive systems which are highly specialized. The majority are free-living in aquatic habitats but a number of interesting parasitic and commensal species are found scattered among the higher turbellarian taxa. But turbellarians are more than just taxonomic curiosities. They have served as illustrative models in research on a variety of basic life processes. For example, their high capacity for regeneration has made them the subject of a large literature in developmental biology, the occurrence of mixoploidy and other karyological oddities among turbellarians has been important in understanding evolution of the genome, and the fine structure and biochemistry of the nervous system in turbellarians is revealing important principles of the organization of so-called primitive neural systems.

Book Thorp and Covich s Freshwater Invertebrates

Download or read book Thorp and Covich s Freshwater Invertebrates written by James H. Thorp and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-09-06 with total page 1149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Readers familiar with the first three editions of Ecology and Classification of North American Freshwater Invertebrates (edited by J.H. Thorp and A.P. Covich) will welcome the comprehensive revision and expansion of that trusted professional reference manual and educational textbook from a single North American tome into a developing multi-volume series covering inland water invertebrates of the world. The series entitled Thorp and Covich’s Freshwater Invertebrates (edited by J.H. Thorp) begins with the current Volume I: Ecology and General Biology (edited by J.H. Thorp and D.C. Rogers), which is designed as a companion volume for the remaining books in the series. Those following volumes provide taxonomic coverage for specific zoogeographic regions of the world, starting with Keys to Nearctic Fauna (Vol. II) and Keys to Palaearctic Fauna (Vol. III). Volume I maintains the ecological and general biological focus of the previous editions but now expands coverage globally in all chapters, includes more taxonomic groups (e.g., chapters on individual insect orders), and covers additional functional topics such as invasive species, economic impacts, and functional ecology. As in previous editions, the 4th edition of Ecology and Classification of North American Freshwater Invertebrates is designed for use by professionals in universities, government agencies, and private companies as well as by undergraduate and graduate students. Global coverage of aquatic invertebrate ecology Discussions on invertebrate ecology, phylogeny, and general biology written by international experts for each group Separate chapters on invasive species and economic impacts and uses of invertebrates Eight additional chapters on insect orders and a chapter on freshwater millipedes Four new chapters on collecting and culturing techniques, ecology of invasive species, economic impacts, and ecological function of invertebrates Overall expansion of ecology and general biology and a shift of the even more detailed taxonomic keys to other volumes in the projected 9-volume series Identification keys to lower taxonomic levels

Book Morphology and Biology of Some Turbellaria From the Mississippi Basin

Download or read book Morphology and Biology of Some Turbellaria From the Mississippi Basin written by Ruth Higley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Morphology and Biology of Some Turbellaria From the Mississippi Basin: With Three Plates Woodworth (1897) and Stringer (1909, 1913) have published descriptions Of five new species from Illinois and Nebraska. Eleven other forms, found also in the eastern states, have been reported from a few localities in Illinois, Neb raska, Michigan, and Wisconsin, but these are all. That some species, at least, are present in great numbers is evident from the various collections for experimental studies. The whole Mississippi valley region with its lakes and almost numberless ponds furnishes conditions in many respects ideal for such types, and their existence will sooner or later be demonstrated. In fact, both Planaria and Rhabdocoelida are of much more common occur rence than is generally supposed and for several reasons are especially valuable for study. First, they are available as living reproducing animals thruout the year. Then, they are good for experimental work since they illustrate a some what primitive phylum, one in which the body structure is very different from that commonly encountered. Well adapted to such studies by their simplicity and great vitality, they have come to be the classic specimens employed both for elementary experiment and for complicated investigation. The free-living method of life, together with the simple fundamental anatomy, when compared with the specialized and much changed condition of the nearly related parasitic worms, shows clearly the variations possible and actually brought about by a different mode Of life. As a whole, the group is of more than ordinary interest. Always considered of no importance economically, their possible relation to other forms has been overlooked, so that only by chance have their habits Of parasitism and voracious feeding been discovered, and there is need Of further investigation along this line. Download or read book Animal Life in Fresh Water written by Helen Mellanby and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: by Professor L. E. Eastham Formerly Professor of Zoology in the University of Sheffield Most books are written with the intention of supplying some particular need, but few end with such single purpose. Mrs. Mellanby's is no exception, for while the author planned this work to serve as a guide to the school pupil, which function it fulfils in an admirable way, it will also prove of value to the teacher, the university student and the amateur naturalist. While it may be argued that it is not the function of the Uni versities to teach Natural History in the commonly accepted sense, it will always be the aim of Zoologists to know more about animals, what they are and do, where they live and why they live in particular environments. It is unfortunate, in view of the fact that the majority of students of Zoology enter the teaching pro fession, that the increasing load of instruction in morphology, physiology, cytology, genetics, evolution and the like frequently makes a personal study of animal life in relation to environment almost impossible. The fortunate ones visit the sea for a fort night's course in Marine Ecology; the others take posts in schools without even this respite and set about converting their academic learning to a school curriculum. The result is an undesirable and often slavish imitation of university method in the school class room.
