Book Biology of Tumors Surfaces Immunology and Comparative Pathology

Download or read book Biology of Tumors Surfaces Immunology and Comparative Pathology written by Frederick Becker and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As was shown in the first two volumes of this series, great strides have been made in identifying many of the agents or classes of substances responsible for carcinogenesis and in delineating their interactions with the cell. Clearly, the aim of such studies is that, once identified, these agents can be eliminated from the environment. Yet, despite these advances and the elimination of some important carcinogenic agents, one major problem exists. It is a constant monitor of all oncologic study and diminishes the importance of every experiment and of every clinical observation. As we noted earlier, that problem is our inability to define the malignant cell. It is through studies of the fundamental biology of tumors that we seek this definition. A vast amount of information has been gathered which describes what this cell does and-to a lesser extent-how it does it. But the why evades us. We have been unable to define the malignant cell, save in broad terms by comparing it to its normal counterpart. The major problem appears to be that the malignant cell does so much. It is a chimera, mystifyingly composed of normal activities and structures, of phenotypic schizophrenia with embryonic, fetal, and adult charac teristics and, occasionally, a hint of an unclassifiable capacity unique to malignant cells.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI) was creat ed to promote cooperative efforts toward solving critical health and safety questions involving foods, drugs, cosmet ics, chemicals, and other aspects of the environment. The Officers and Trustees believe that questions regarding health and safety are best resolved when government and industry rely on scientific investigations, analyses, and re views by independent experts. Further, the scientific aspects of an issue should be examined and discussed on an international basis, separate from the political concerns of individual companies. ILSI is pleased to sponsor this set of monographs on the pathology of laboratory animals. This project will be use ful in improving the scientific basis for the application of pathologic techniques to health and safety evaluation of substances in our environment. The world wide distribu tion of the authors, editors, and Editorial Board who are creating these monographs strengthens the expectation that international communication and cooperation will al so be strengthened.

Book The Biochemistry of Glycoproteins and Proteoglycans

Download or read book The Biochemistry of Glycoproteins and Proteoglycans written by William Lennarz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although glycoproteins and proteoglycans have been a subject of re search for many years, it is only during the last five or so years that they have aroused the interest of a very broad cross section of investigators in the biological sciences. The reason for this expanded interest in these molecules is simple: not only are glycoproteins and proteoglycans ubiq uitous, but many are molecules with well-defined and important biological functions. The list of molecules that fall into this category grows daily; interferon, immunoglobulins, certain hormones, many cell surface recep tors, and viral coat proteins are but a few examples. Thus, investigators with interests as diverse as viral replication. cell-cell interactions. poly isoprenoid synthesis, secretory processes, hormone responses, embryonic development, and immunology have become concerned with glycopro teins and proteoglycans. The objective of this book is to summarize the current state of knowledge on the biochemistry of these molecules. Coverage is by no means encyclopedic; rather the thrust is to emphasize the recent ad vances. The first chapter deals primarily with structural work on the oligosaccharide chains of glycoproteins, but it will be apparent in it and in the succeeding two chapters on biosynthesis that not only do structural studies aid biosynthetic investigations, but that studies on biosynthesis often playa major role in elucidation of structure.

Book Microcirculation in Cancer Metastasis

Download or read book Microcirculation in Cancer Metastasis written by F. William Orr and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1991-07-25 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although mechanisms involved in the spread of cancer have been the subject of a major research endeavor over the past decade, metastatic tumors still account for significant clinical morbidity and the failure of cancer treatment. Not only are the vascular pathways the most common route for the dissemination of cancer cells, but interactions between the cells and the circulation act as important rate-regulators for the metastatic process. This authoritative, multi-authored volume addresses the importance of microcirculation in cancer metastasis. The book begins with up-to-date reviews on the biology of endothelial cells and the structure and physiology of the normal and tumor microcirculations, and then emphasizes interactions between components of the microcirculation and cancer cells. Metastasis is discussed through chapters exploring the entry of cancer cells into the circulation, the biophysics and morphology of cancer cell traffic and arrest, interactions with host cells and the basement membranes, and angiogenesis. This fascinating book will interest oncologists, pathologists, and students of metastasis or the microcirculation.

Download or read book Brain Metastasis written by L. Weiss and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of those people dying with cancer, many die as a result of metastases. In spite of this, a surprisingly small number of texts have been devoted to this clinically important topic. The present series of monographs originated in discussions, which convinced us of the need for texts on metasasis which would contain not only basic and clinical observations on human beings and where neces sary, on experimental animals but also discussions of the state of the art in diagnosis and therapy. In order to achieve this in-depth approach, for which publication was preceded by small workshops, it was necessary to impose limitations on the scope of the topic. Metastasis is therefore dis cussed by site, and the series is organized accordingly. The first volume in the series, Pulmonary Metastasis, was an expanded version of a Workshop held at Roswell Park Memorial Institute in 1977. This, the second volume, is based on a similar workshop on metastasis to the brain, held at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in September, 1978. In organiz ing both the workshop and in editing this volume, we have been excep tionally fortunate to receive the generous cooperation of Dr. Jerome B. Posner, a practicing neurologic oncologist who has given freely of his ex pertise in this specialized field.

Book Cancer a Comprehensive Treatise 2

Download or read book Cancer a Comprehensive Treatise 2 written by Frederick Becker and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impact of basic research on oncology has been particularly impressive in the recent search for the cause of malignancy. Equally impressive is our appreciation of the cause of tumors based on observation. Even in the earliest era of the study of infectious diseases, it was proposed that tumorous growth in animals and birds resulted from "minute" infectious particles. Experiments then supported the hypothesis, that the etiologic agent in many animal tumors was viral. The development of molecular biology, supported by technical advances and conceptual understanding of macromolecular action, led to an explosive increase in studies of animal oncogenic viruses. For a decade, new findings emerged from research laboratories revealing the enormous variety of such agents, the complex ity of their interactions with cells, and the tantalizingly possible mechanisms by which they might cause malignant transformation of the cell. Repeatedly, clues emerged which suggested the intervention of viral agents in human tumors. A breathless excitement pervaded both the scientific and public communities as highly publicized findings rapidly followed one another. The excitement was no less scientific than it was practical, for implicit in the concept of the viral oncogen is the possibility of specific virostatic or virotoxic agents or of immunization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developmental cancer products (oncodevelopmental markers, ODM) not only serve as diagnostic and prognostic indicators but also may be used to study the nature of the carcinogenic process and the biology of tumors. For many years oncologists have searched for markers of cancer cells that would permit unequivocal recognition of cancer in contrast to noncancerous tissue. The earliest and still most widely used method of identification of cancer tissue or cells is the structural resemblance of cancer tissue to fetal or immature tissue. Pathologists not only recognize cancer by its morphologic similarity to fetal tissues, but also in many instances can relate the behavior of a given tumor to the degree of tissue differentiation. Thus, poorly differentiated tumors that resemble fetal tissue generally grow more rapidly and metastasize earlier than do well-differentiated tumors that more closely resemble adult tissue. In recent years the commonality of fetal and cancer tissue has been extended to products of tumor cells that, can be analyzed by biochemical, immunological, or physiological techniques. Increas ingly, products of cancer cells similar to fetal products are being identified and studied. These products range from cell-surface markers (fetal or differentiation antigens), placental proteins, hormones, and isoenzymes to a multitude of products, such as carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), alphafetoprotein (AFP), lymphocyte markers, and nucleic acids, such as tRNA, that are produced in small amounts by v vi PREFACE continually differentiating cells in the adult but in much greater amounts by tumors.

Download or read book Bioactive Polymeric Systems written by Charles G. Gebelein and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 698 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The vast array of libraries in the world bear mute witness to the truth of the 3000-year-old observation of King Solomon who stated " ... of making many books there is no end, and much study is a weariness of the flesh." Yet books are an essential written record of our lives and the progress of science and humanity. Here is another book to add to this huge collection, but, hopefully, not just another collection of pages, but rather a book with a specific purpose to aid in alleviating the "weariness of the flesh" that could arise from much studying of other journals and books in order to obtain the basic information contained herein. This book is about polymeric materials and biological activity, as the title notes. Polymeric materials, in the broad view taken here, would include not only synthetic polymers (e.g., polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, polyesters, polyamides, etc.), but also the natural macromolecules (e.g., proteins, nucleic acids, polysaccharides) which compose natural tissues in humans, animals and plants. In the broad sense used here, biological activity is any type of such action whether it be in medication, pest control, plant-growth regu lation, and so on. In short, this book attempts to consider, briefly, the use of any type of polymeric material system with essentially any kind of biological activity.
