Book Proceedings of the Symposium on the Biology of the California Islands

Download or read book Proceedings of the Symposium on the Biology of the California Islands written by Ralph Philbrick and published by . This book was released on 1967-10-01 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between Point Conception, California and Punta Eugenia, Baja California, there are 16 major islands. These islands, extending from San Miguel to Natividad, seem to form a cohesive biological unit. On October 29 and 30, 1965, the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden sponsored a symposium, held at the Garden, on the Biology of the California Islands. This volume comprises the Proceedings of that meeting. The symposium was the natural consequence of continuing studies carried out by the Garden staff whose objective was the publication of a flora of the California Islands. Attendance at the symposium was by invitation and was largely limited to those who were then studying insular biological problems or had dealt with facets of those problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Islands have captured the imagination of scientists and the public for centuries - unique and rare environments, their isolation makes them natural laboratories for ecology and evolution. This authoritative, alphabetically arranged reference, featuring more than 200 succinct articles by leading scientists from around the world, provides broad coverage of all the island sciences. But what exactly is an island? The volume editors define it here as any discrete habitat isolated from other habitats by inhospitable surroundings. The Encyclopedia of Islands examines many such insular settings - oceanic and continental islands as well as places such as caves, mountaintops, and whale falls at the bottom of the ocean. This essential, one-stop resource, extensively illustrated with color photographs, clear maps, and graphics will introduce island science to a wide audience and spur further research on some of the planet's most fascinating habitats." --Book Jacket.

Book A New Island Biogeography of the Sea of Cort es

Download or read book A New Island Biogeography of the Sea of Cort es written by Ted J. Case and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2002-11-21 with total page 690 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This updated and expanded A New Island Biogeography of the Sea of Cort'es, first published nearly 20 years ago, integrates new and broader studies encompassing more taxa and more complete island coverage. The present synthesis provides a basis for further research and exploration in upcoming years of the biologically fascinating Sea of Cort'es region. The Gulf region is increasingly being exploited, for its natural resources by way of marine fisheries, and for its stunning natural beauty by way of a burgeoning tourism industry. Further, the region's human population is increasing apace. It is appropriate, therefore, that this volume discusses these evolving circumstances, and the efforts of the Mexican government to regulate and manage them. The new Biogeography includes a section on the conservation issues in the Sea of Cort'es, past accomplishments and conservation needs as yet outstanding. This book should be of strong interest to conservation biologists, ecologists, and evolutionary biologists more generally.

Book Natural History of Santa Catalina Island

Download or read book Natural History of Santa Catalina Island written by Gerald J. Bakus and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: GERALD J. BAKUS, Ph.D., is Professor of Biology at the Uni-versity of Southern California, Los Angeles. He has more than five decades of experience in the fields of biology and ecol-ogy. He obtained training in terrestrial biology as an under-graduate student, freshwater biology as a master%u2019s degree student, and marine biology for his Ph.D. at the University of Washington, Seattle. In addition to his many published research and review articles, Dr. Bakus is the author of Coral Reef Ecosystems (1994), Quantitative Analysis of Marine Biological Communities (2007), Natural History of Oregon (2009), and Natural History of California (2011). The book titled Natural History of Santa Catalina Island was developed from a multimedia CD developed at the University of Southern California. It was based on a course titled Ecology and Natural History of California offered at Santa Catalina Island in January. Dr. Bakus teaches general ecology, marine biology, natural history of California, and quantitative biology. The principal reason for producing this book is to make people aware of this remarkable island and receive enjoyment from observing its great natural beauty.

Book Natural History of the Islands of California

Download or read book Natural History of the Islands of California written by Schoenherr/Feldmeth and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Islands have always been fascinating places, their separateness evoking a sense of mystery and inspiring a yearning for exploration. California's islands are unique evolutionary laboratories, places where plants and animals have grown and interacted in isolation for millions of years. This comprehensive book discusses both the human and the natural history of the islands of California, including all eight Channel Islands, Año Nuevo, the Farallons, and the islands of San Francisco Bay. It is also useful as a field guide for visitors, and details on reaching the islands are contained in the first chapter. The authors explore the formation of the islands; discuss the history of human habitation, beginning with the Native Americans who first visited the islands 12,000 years ago; and provide a thorough introduction to the marine and terrestrial biotas of the islands. The authors also discuss past damage and ongoing threats to island ecosystems, including devastation caused by the introduction of non-native animals and plants. Large herbivorous animals in particular have caused considerable damage, since island plants evolved in the absence of herbivores and therefore have no defenses against them.At present all of California's islands are managed by conservancies and public agencies such as the National Park Service and State Park system, and various environmental organizations are working with them to return the islands to their original condition.
