Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Biology of Freshwater Pollution," is a highly regarded overview of the subject aimed at advanced undergraduates and professionals. This latest edition provides an up-to-date summary of the whole field covering recent research, case studies and examples. The book begins by describing contrasting examples of pollution events. Individual chapters then deal with the major types of pollution introducing their sources, exploring their impacts on biological systems and water resources using contemporary examples, and discussing methods for mitigating impacts. Techniques used to investigate pollution are introduced throughout and the penultimate chapter deals extensively with the biological assessment of water quality. The final chapter looks at water resource management in the twenty-first century and the role of the biologist in that process. Features of the new edition* "New "coverage of current issues: biomarkers, endocrine disruptors, global warming* "New "chapter on biological pollution (invasive species) * "New "combined chapters bringing together material on toxic pollutions and energy and pollution * Management chapter extensively revised including the new organisation of the water industry and new regulatory frameworks* "New "case studies and examples * References have been extensively updated This book is aimed at advanced students in Aquatic and Applied Biology, Limnology and Environmental Science and scientists working in the water industry. Christopher Mason is a Professor of Biology at the University of Essex, UK. He has extensive research experience in the fields of pollution and conservation of freshwater and coastal environments, including eutrophication, heavy metals and organochlorines.

Book Biological Indicators of Freshwater Pollution and Environmental Management

Download or read book Biological Indicators of Freshwater Pollution and Environmental Management written by J.M. Hellawell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The preface of a book often provides a convenient place in which the author can tender his apologies for any inadequacies and affords him the facility to excuse himself by reminding the reader that his art is long but life, or at least the portion of it in which he has the opportunity for writing books, is short. I, too, am deeply conscious that I have undertaken a task which I could not hope to complete to my own satisfaction but I offer, in self defence, the observation that, inadequate though it is, there is no other book extant, so far as I am aware, which provides the information contained herein within the covers of a single volume. Often during the last decade, in discharging my responsibilities for the environmental aspects of the water authority's operations and works, I should have been deeply grateful to have had access to a compendium such as this. The lack of a convenient source of data made me aware of the need which I have attempted to fill and in doing so I have drawn on my experiences of the kinds of problem which are presented to biologists in the water industry. The maxim 'half a loaf is better than none' seems particularly apt in this context.

Book Biology of Freshwater Pollution

Download or read book Biology of Freshwater Pollution written by C. F. Mason and published by Longman Scientific and Technical. This book was released on 1991 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continuing to provide an excellent and comprehensive overview, the third edition of Biology of Freshwater Pollution has been updated and revised on all aspects of pollution, since the success of the second edition in 1991. Key features for this edition include 300 new references covering latest research; new sections on biomarkers, neoplasms and effects of global warming; incorporation of new developments in European and UK water resource management; a mathematical model of eutrophication re-instated from the first edition, giving an excellent example of using a simple model for lake management; more work on the Great Lakes, particularly on PCBs; updated case studies of the River Ebbw Fawr and the Rhine, indicating a more positive view of long term recovery, as well as clearly drawing out themes of chronic and episodic pollution. Written for undergraduate and postgraduate students of Aquatic and Applied Biology, Limnology, Environmental Science and scientists working in the water industry.

Book Fresh Water Pollution Dynamics and Remediation

Download or read book Fresh Water Pollution Dynamics and Remediation written by Humaira Qadri and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-07-17 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freshwater is a finite resource and is being deteriorated directly and indirectly by anthropogenic pressures. Preserving the quality and availability of freshwater resources is becoming one of the most pressing environmental challenges on the international horizon. To ensure the preservation as well as availability of freshwater resources, there is a need to understand the ecology of the freshwater systems, pollution problems, their impacts, restoration techniques to be opted and the conservation measures. In this backdrop the present book on ‘Freshwater Pollution Dynamics and Remediation’ has been compiled. The book provides an understanding about the present state of art, pollution impacts including the changes in the environmental quality as well as the shift in the aquatic biological communities of the fragile freshwater ecosystems. Besides, the impact of deteriorating quality of the freshwater ecosystems on the animal and human health is also discussed in detail. This book provides a comprehensive account of the techniques based on updated research in biotechnology, bio-remediation, phyto-remediation and nano-bioremediation. The role of biosorpers and biofilms as a remediation tool has also been detailed. The book is a ready reference for researchers, scientists and educators who are involved in the freshwater pollution, remediation and management studies. The book editors with an expertise in diverse research fields in freshwater ecosystems have congregated the most inclusive research accounts on the freshwater pollution and remediation and thus developed a repository of diverse knowledge on the subject

Book The Pollution Biology of Aquatic Oligochaetes

Download or read book The Pollution Biology of Aquatic Oligochaetes written by Pilar Rodriguez and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-08-30 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In aquatic ecosystems, the oligochaetes are often a major component of the community. Their relevance in sediment quality assessment is largely related to their benthic and detritivorous life habit. In this book, we aim to present the state of the art of Pollution Biology using oligochaete worms in laboratory and field studies. Future research will require the combination of a variety of methodological approaches and the integration of the resulting information, avoiding fragmented and often conflicting visions of the relationships of the species with their environment. Current approaches to ecotoxicology and bioaccumulation using ecological risk assessment provide the opportunity to relate community studies with probability of effects. This book addresses three main themes: Ecological and Field Studies using the composition and structure of oligochaete communities, Toxicology and Laboratory Studies, and Bioaccumulation and Trophic Transfer Studies. Two appendices list values of toxicological parameters (LC50, EC50) and several bioaccumulation variables (bioaccumulation factors, biological half-life, toxicokinetic coefficients, and critical body residues) for different oligochaete species. Additional information is provided on Methodological Issues and on the Taxonomy of several oligochaete families, with information on the most recent taxonomic debates. Each chapter includes a critical view, based on the authors’ experience, of a number of current issues which have been raised in the literature.
