Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Orleans has a distinguished history as a center for medical and biological learning, a history shared by Tulane University, its School of Medicine, and its Bio logical and Medical Sciences departments. This background made it especially fitting that the University, in conjunction with the Cancer Association of Greater New Orleans, Inc. and the National Cancer Institute, should sponsor the "Symposium: Biology of Amphibian Tumors" held October 28, 29, 30, 1968. The University wishes to express its appreciation to the Cancer Association for its assistance in making the Symposium possible and to acknowledge the support made available through the Bio medical Sciences Support Grant program of the National Institutes of Health. As the title of this volume indicates, the Symposium yielded valuable results in the area of cancer research and it stands to stimulate further efforts in this most important field. Some notion of the impact of this symposium is suggested by the broad range of the 200 participants it attracted. They came not only from the breadth and length of the U.S., but from abroad, from France, England, Austria, and Italy.

Book Ecology and Evolution of Cancer

Download or read book Ecology and Evolution of Cancer written by Beata Ujvari and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2017-02-08 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecology and Evolution of Cancer is a timely work outlining ideas that not only represent a substantial and original contribution to the fields of evolution, ecology, and cancer, but also goes beyond by connecting the interfaces of these disciplines. This work engages the expertise of a multidisciplinary research team to collate and review the latest knowledge and developments in this exciting research field. The evolutionary perspective of cancer has gained significant international recognition and interest, which is fully understandable given that somatic cellular selection and evolution are elegant explanations for carcinogenesis. Cancer is now generally accepted to be an evolutionary and ecological process with complex interactions between tumor cells and their environment sharing many similarities with organismal evolution. As a critical contribution to this field of research the book is important and relevant for the applications of evolutionary biology to understand the origin of cancers, to control neoplastic progression, and to prevent therapeutic failures. - Covers all aspects of the evolution of cancer, appealing to researchers seeking to understand its origins and effects of treatments on its progression, as well as to lecturers in evolutionary medicine - Functions as both an introduction to cancer and evolution and a review of the current research on this burgeoning, exciting field, presented by an international group of leading editors and contributors - Improves understanding of the origin and the evolution of cancer, aiding efforts to determine how this disease interferes with biotic interactions that govern ecosystems - Highlights research that intends to apply evolutionary principles to help predict emergence and metastatic progression with the aim of improving therapies

Book Current Topics in Microbiology and Immunology Ergebnisse der Mikrobiologie und Immunit tsforschung

Download or read book Current Topics in Microbiology and Immunology Ergebnisse der Mikrobiologie und Immunit tsforschung written by W. Arber and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "When we give a definition it is for the purpose of using it". HENRI POINCARE in Science and Method A. Objectives The first version of this paper was written to introduce new students and fellows of my laboratory to the mysteries of herpesviruses. Consonant with this design sections dealing with well documented data were trimmed to the bone whereas many obscure phenomena, controversial data and seemingly trivial observations were discussed generously and at length. There is some doubt as to whether it was meant to be published, but it was not a review. The objective of reviews is frequently to bring order. But alas, even the most fluent summation of credible data frequently makes dull reading and too much plausible order, like very little entropy in chemical reactions, is not the most suitable environment on which to nurture the urge to discover. This version is more charitable but not less inbalanced. The bibliography reflects the intent of the paper and was updated last in December of 1968. It should be obvious without saying that no single account such as this can do justice or injustice, as the case may be, to the several hundred papers published on herpesviruses each year or to the many thousand papers published on herpesviruses since the first of the members of the family was experimentally transmitted to a heterologous host more than half a century ago (GRUTER, 1924). B. Definition 1.

Book Diseases of Amphibians and Reptiles

Download or read book Diseases of Amphibians and Reptiles written by Gerald Hoff and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 776 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While diseases of free-ranging and captive mammalian and avian wildlife species have received considerable interest in the past 25 years, those of amphibians and reptiles (collectively, the herptiles) generally have been assigned lesser importance. The literature concern ing disease in herptiles is widely scattered, consisting chiefly of case reports and prevalence surveys, and with heavy emphasis on captive reptiles. The dynamics of the host-agent-environment relationship have been studied for only a few diseases. This diverse data base is primarily a function of the paucity of investigators whose chief interest is in diseases of herptiles. This first edition represents an effort to bring together some of the diffuse knowledge on infectious and non-infectious diseases of free-ranging and captive herp tiles. Issue may be taken with the choice of topics; how ever, predominant diseases, as well as some diseases of lesser prominence, are presented. The editors were forced to accept certain omissions, particularly with amphibian diseases, simply for lack of contributors. The resulting text, however, we hope will be of value to veterinarians, herpetolo, gists, wildlife disease investigators, wildlife managers, zoo curators, and university students. G.L. Hoff F.L. Book Physiology of the Amphibia

Download or read book Physiology of the Amphibia written by Brian Lofts and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 663 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physiology of the Amphibia, Volume III consists of 10 chapters beginning with a discussion on amphibian color changes and the various aspects of the molting cycle. Possessing a skin more suitable for life in the water, the amphibians need to prevent excessive water loss from their body to the environment; hence, an additional mechanism for reducing the hazards of desiccation in many anuran species is described. This book also tackles the physiology of amphibian cells in culture. Furthermore, the animals' nervous, visual, and auditory systems; their immunity; and metamorphosis are explained in this text. This reference will be useful to general biologists and to students with interests in animal physiology.
