Book excerpt: Abalone: Biology, Ecology, Aquaculture and Fisheries, Volume 44 in the Developments in Aquaculture and Fisheries Science series, describes the taxonomy of more than 50 abalone species worldwide. The content contains information on the biology, physiology and ecology of each species as well as reproduction, genetics, diseases and parasites. It includes abalone fisheries in different parts of the world, detailing abalone aquaculture in China, Japan, Korea, Australia, Europe and Western North America. This reference takes a comprehensive approach to understanding overall shellfish management, making it valuable to fisheries, marine biologists and researchers studying shellfish, aquaculture and the ocean environment. This will also be a great resource for government and academia professionals interested in aquaculture and fisheries and their sustainable futures. Includes the newest information on diseases and parasites, marine contaminants, genetics, population dynamics and more, with extensive reference lists provided for each chapter Addresses the full scope of aquaculture expansion and issues surrounding sustainability and production and the newest observations in marine contaminants and effects on abalone production Includes the most recent advances in research and the newest developments in industry by top world experts

Book The Biology and Fishery of Roe s Abalone Haliotis Roei Gray in South western Australia with Emphasis on the Perth Fishery

Download or read book The Biology and Fishery of Roe s Abalone Haliotis Roei Gray in South western Australia with Emphasis on the Perth Fishery written by Boze Hancock and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Roe’s abalone (Haliotis roei) fishery near Perth, Western Australia, is uniquely accessible, and highly vulnerable to overexploitation. The sustainability of this intensively utilized fishery requires robust assessment. To facilitate an assessment, this research aimed to provide rigorous and detailed biological information with appropriate interpretation. Four critical aspects of the species’ biology and population dynamics were investigated: (1) the stock structure; (2) the recreational catch; (3) an appropriate growth curve and description of size at age; and (4) abundance measures against which to assess the impact of fishing mortality. Allozyme electrophoresis was used to investigate stock structure across the species’ distribution. Standardized variance in allelic frequencies between 10 sites in south-western Australia indicated high levels of gene flow across the 3000 km sampled (mean FST = 0.009). An isolation-by-distance was evident when pairwise measures of GST were related to geographic distance (r=0.45, P

Book Abalone of the World

Download or read book Abalone of the World written by S. A. Shepard and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 1992-07-27 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive volume contains some sixty papers and reviews presented at the First International Symposium on Abalone Biology, Fisheries and Culture held in La Paz, Mexico. Introductory reviews in the book focus on the evolutionary origin, radiation and modern relationships of the genus Haliotis. Further papers review aspects of the reproductive process, larval energetics, mechanisms of larval settlement, and the ecology of settlement. Feeding deterrents and attractants, and the relation between food and growth are reviewed in a later section of authoritative papers. The natural mortality of abalone and its causes, predators and diseases are thoroughly reviewed. Several papers summarise information on the withering syndrome afflicting black abalone in California. A series of excellent papers and reviews then consider the problems of managing abalone fisheries. The models used are reviewed and examples given of the application of models to specific fisheries. Further papers provide new information on stock enhancement and the book concludes with case studies of the eight major abalone fisheries of the world with a review of the management of each. The book is divided into eight sections as follows: Part I - Evolution and distributuion. Part II - Physiology, genetics, reproduction. Part III - Larval ecology and settlement. Part IV - Feeding, growth. Part V - Marketing, disease and predators. Part VI - Fishery biology, modelling. Part VII - Case studies of fisheries. Part VIII - Culture.
