Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 53 papers in this proceedings include a section celebrating the 25-year anniversary of the Shrub Sciences Laboratory (4 papers), three sections devoted to themes, genetics, and biodiversity (12 papers), disturbance ecology and biodiversity (14 papers), ecophysiology (13 papers), community ecology (9 papers), and field trip section (1 paper). The anniversary session papers emphasized the productivity and history of the Shrub Sciences Laboratory, 100 years of genetics, plant materials development for wildland shrub ecosystems, and current challenges in management and research in wildland shrub ecosystems. The papers in each of the thematic science sessions were centered on wildland shrub ecosystems. The field trip featured the genetics and ecology of chenopod shrublands of east-central Utah. The papers were presented at the 11th Wildland Shrub Symposium: Shrubland Ecosystem Genetics and Biodiversity held at the Brigham Young University Conference Center, Provo, UT, June 13-15, 2000.

Book Galling Arthropods and Their Associates

Download or read book Galling Arthropods and Their Associates written by K. Ozaki and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-02-25 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses recent developments in the ecology, evolution, systematics, physiology, and biodiversity of gall-inducing arthropods, with individual contributions ranging in scope from detailed descriptions to profoundly synthetic studies. One underlying theme is the various impacts of gall induction that indirectly affect insect communities on the host plant. The other important contribution is the highly intricate and dynamic interactions between galling arthropods and their uniquely specialized host plants.

Book The Gall Midges of the Neotropical Region

Download or read book The Gall Midges of the Neotropical Region written by Raymond J. Gagné and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gagne's introductory chapters include biographical sketches of those individuals who have contributed most to our knowledge of Neotropical gall midges. He also discusses classification and distribution, external anatomy and biology, and techniques for collecting, rearing, and preparing specimens for study. The heart of the book comprises two chapters. The first presents the midges themselves: identification keys to the genera, a synopsis of each genus and higher taxon, and a list of all known species from South America. The second includes keys and descriptions of galls and other damage caused by the midges, with known hosts.

Book Pattern and Process in Host Parasitoid Interactions

Download or read book Pattern and Process in Host Parasitoid Interactions written by Bradford A. Hawkins and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1994-07-28 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How is the staggering biodiversity of the parasitoid insects maintained? This book, first published in 1994, explores patterns in host-parasitoid interactions, including parasitoid community richness, the importance of parasitoids as mortality factors, and their impact on host densities as determined by the outcomes of parasitoid introductions for biological control. It documents general patterns using data sets generated from the global literature and evaluates potential underlying biological, ecological and evolutionary mechanisms. A theme running throughout the book is the importance of host refuges as a major constraint on host-parasitoid interactions. Much can be learnt from the analysis of broad patterns; a few simple rules can go a long way in explaining the major components of these interactions. This book will be an invaluable resource for researchers interested in community ecology, population biology, entomology and biological control.

Book Biology of Insect induced Galls

Download or read book Biology of Insect induced Galls written by Joseph D. Shorthouse and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The formation of galls--abnormal growths or swelling in a plant--may be induced by infection of the plant by bacteria or fungi, or attack from certain mites, nematodes, or insects. This book provides comprehensive coverage of the biology of galls and their complex ecological etiology. The expert contributors address topics such as the effect of insect secretions on plant growth, the evolution and physiology of gall-inducing insects, patterns in gall development and induction, the role of nutritive cells, and many other key issues. This valuable work in cecidology will interest all biologists and botanists concerned with plant health, and entomologists working in the field of plant-insect relationships.
