Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of General Biology: Designed for the Use of Schools and Science Classes In the preparation of this work, designed, as it is, to meet the wants of junior science students in connection with the Science and Art Department, the Syllabus of the Elementary Stage in General Biology has been followed. It is not intended, however, to supersede the use of the scalpel or microscope, or.oral instruction from a competent teacher. On the contrary, it is hoped that, with its aid, and with the other helps recommended, the student will examine the great field of nature for himself, and thus acquire that kind of knowledge which it is most desirable and delightful to possess - namely, the knowledge derived from a patient questioning and examination of those Obj ects in nature to which one's studies are Specially. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present work is based chiefly upon the Introduction to the authors Manual of Zoology, much of which is given here in an unaltered form. A considerable portion, however, of the Introduction has been here recast, whilst fully two-thirds of the work consists of new matter. Illustrations also have been introduced wherever such appeared to be necessary. Many important subjects have, of course, been necessarily treated very superficially, or altogether omitted, as unsuitable for a merely elementary work. It is hoped, however, that most of those subjects are touched upon, a knowledge of which would be useful to the student of living or extinct forms of life, or to the general reader. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Biology: A Book of Outlines and Practical Studies for the General Student This book offers a series of practical studies Of biological phenomena for the guidance of the general student. It is not a formal text, and not at all a treatise, but only a guide intended to assist the student in acquiring for himself some real knowledge Of living nature. It differs chiefly from other books intended for the use of college classes in the wider range of studies it offers, some important phases of biology having hitherto been dismissed with mere didactic instruction. Morphology has dominated - Often monopo lized - college work in biology in the past; doubtless, be cause it was first reduced to pedagogic form, and made available for laboratory instruction. A more equable treatment is here attempted, in the hope of leading the student to a practical acquaintance with elementary phenomena in the whole broad field. Book A Text Book of Biology for Students in General Medical and Technical Courses Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Text Book of Biology for Students in General Medical and Technical Courses Classic Reprint written by William Martin Smallwood and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-05 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Biology for Students in General, Medical and Technical Courses IN this edition the general plan of the previous editions is retained but made more logical by bringing forward the chapters on plants so that the value to be derived from the evolutionary point of view can be employed in the study of the plant types discussed. The chapter on hydra is shifted for a similar reason. The section dealing with the biology of cells (chapters VIII - XI) has been entirely rearranged and extended in order that it may furnish a better foundation for the present-day conception of biology. The laboratory suggestions at the beginning of each chapter are omitted and attention is called to Laboratory Outlines by Hargitt and Hargitt which meets the needs of those wishing laboratory directions for the present edition. This book may be secured by writing directly to Professor C. W. Hargitt, Syracuse University, Syracuse, N. Y. The historical development of biology, typified in large part by the emphasis which certain great men placed first upon one aspect of living things and then upon another, affords a natural approach to our subject: Linnaeus (1707 - 17 78) emphasized the external form of organisms, while Haller (1708 - 1777) inquired into the general physiological activities of living things. These two men may be given credit for defining the two lines of study, morphology and physiology, which enter so largely into all modern courses in biology. Book Introduction to Elementary Practical Biology

Download or read book Introduction to Elementary Practical Biology written by Charles Wright Dodge and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-10 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to Elementary Practical Biology: A Laboratory Guide for High-School and College Students For the purpose of developing in the student the power of independent observation, to teach him that the source of all knowledge is not the book rather than the specimen, that there is a great deal to be seen besides that which the book describes, and that he is not to consider that, though his observations may not agree with those of the book, the latter must, necessarily, be right-these are the reasons why this guide has been written. The guide consists essentially of questions on the gross and minute structure and on the physiology of a series of common animals and plants which are typical of their kind - questions which can be answered only by actual examination of the specimen or by perform ance of the experiment. Directions are given for the collection of specimens, for their preservation, and for preparing them for examination, also for performing simple physiological experiments. Particular species are not required, as the questions usually apply equally well to several related forms. The material of which the guide is composed has been gradually accumulated during an experience of nearly seven years of teaching high-school and college classes, consisting of students of both sexes and of ages vary ing from fourteen to fifty years. With the exception of a few additions made while preparing the manual for printing, all of the work herein detailed has been per formed by college students, and a very large part by students in the second year of their high-school course. Although it is thought that the topics are so arranged and the questions so worded that any one of average intelligence can study any or all of the organisms given, still it is not intended that the guide shall supersede the instructor, but, rather, aid him. The student will always require the advice and suggestions of his teach er, who will need to point out many of the structures which here are only named, and which it would be im possible to describe so that the student could find them for himself, without defeating the very object which the guide seeks to attain. Book excerpt: Concepts of Biology is designed for the single-semester introduction to biology course for non-science majors, which for many students is their only college-level science course. As such, this course represents an important opportunity for students to develop the necessary knowledge, tools, and skills to make informed decisions as they continue with their lives. Rather than being mired down with facts and vocabulary, the typical non-science major student needs information presented in a way that is easy to read and understand. Even more importantly, the content should be meaningful. Students do much better when they understand why biology is relevant to their everyday lives. For these reasons, Concepts of Biology is grounded on an evolutionary basis and includes exciting features that highlight careers in the biological sciences and everyday applications of the concepts at hand.We also strive to show the interconnectedness of topics within this extremely broad discipline. In order to meet the needs of today's instructors and students, we maintain the overall organization and coverage found in most syllabi for this course. A strength of Concepts of Biology is that instructors can customize the book, adapting it to the approach that works best in their classroom. Concepts of Biology also includes an innovative art program that incorporates critical thinking and clicker questions to help students understand--and apply--key concepts.

Book Biological Teaching in the Colleges of the United States Classic Reprint

Download or read book Biological Teaching in the Colleges of the United States Classic Reprint written by John Pendleton Campbell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biological Teaching in the Colleges of the United States The absolute necessity for considerable Science teaching in any liberal course Of study is now generally admitted, and teachers seem almost unanimous in believing that the training in methods is the primary Object Of such work, and that the information involved, important though it is, must be given a subordinate place. It follows, therefore, that if the quality Of teaching is what it should be, the methods Of Scientific inquiry, SO far at least as they are common to all branches, may be learned by studies in one department of science quite as well as in any other. It follows, too, that in the arrangement Of studies, in a college curriculum at least, all sciences must be given an approximately equal rank, equal SO far as the general character Of the logical methods is concerned, and varying principally in the extent to which they depend upon the two sources Of information - observation and experiment. It is as a means of training the observational powers that biology 1s chiefly valuable. In this respect it is surpassed by no one Of the natural sciences, and indeed it possesses certain features which it shares with none Of them. In spite Of this the general improvement in the methods of teaching biology has come much 'later than in any Of the sister sciences. In seeking for the cause of this it seems evident that the introduction Of practical and rational methods into the teaching Of chemistry and physics has been greatly facilitated by popular ap preciation based upon the very erroneous but widespread idea that the final end and aim Of chemistry is the ability to determine the composi tion Of unknown substances, while physics finds a justification for its existence only in such occasional discoveries as the electric light and the phonograph. The educational value Of practical work in chemistry and physics seems, therefore, to have been something Of an after thought, and to have been demonstrated only after such work had been performed for a considerable time with other Objects in view. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to General Biology The third change is the omission of the laboratory directions, these having been found unsuitable. The needs of different teachers differ so widely that it is impossible to draw up a scheme that shall answer for all. In place of the laboratory directions for students we have therefore given, in an appendix, a series of prae tical suggestions to teachers, leaving it to them to work out de tailed directions, if desired, by the help of the standard labora tory manuals. These suggestions are the result of a good deal of experience on the part of many teachers besides ourselves, and we hope they will be found useful in procuring and preparing material (often a matter of considerable difficulty), and in decid ing just what the student may reasonably be expected to do. For the rest, the original matter has been thoroughly revised. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biology: A Lecture Delivered at Columbia University in the Series on Science, Philosophy and Art, November 20, 1907 I must at the outset remark that among the many sciences that are occupied with the study of the living world there is no one that may properly lay exclusive claim to the name of Biology. The word does not, in fact, denote any par ticular science but is a generic term applied to a large group of biological sciences all of which alike are con cerned with the phenomena of life. To present in a single address, even in rudimentary outline, the specific results of these sciences is obviously an impossible task, and one that I have no intention of attempting. I shall offer no more than a kind of preface or introduction to those who will speak after me on the biological sciences of physiology, botany and zoology; and I shall confine it to what seem to me the most essential and characteristic of the general problems towards which all lines of biological inquiry must sooner or later converge. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Biology, Vol. 1 Several years ago it was our good fortune to follow as grad uate students a course of lectures and practical study in General Biology, under the direction of Professor Martin, at Johns Hop kins University. Since that time we have ever been strongly of the opinion that beginners in Biology should be introduced to the subject by some similar method, following in the main the outlines marked out by Huxley and Martin more than ten years ago. The present work thus owes its origin to the influence of the authors of the Elementary Biology, our deep indebtedness to whom we gratefully acknowledge.
