Book BIOLOGISTICS FOR SPACE SYSTEMS SYMPOSIUM

Download or read book BIOLOGISTICS FOR SPACE SYSTEMS SYMPOSIUM written by AEROSPACE MEDICAL RESEARCH LABS WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB OHIO. and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is a compila ion of paper present d at the symposium-workshop on Biologi tics for Space Systems sponsored by the 6570th Aerospace Medical Research Laboratories in May 1962. The foundations concerning biologistics for longterm manned space missions are established and basic and applied research phases in developing a complete biorege rating system are discussed. The state of the art of algal gas exchange systems was fully covered, followed by the most recent concepts on photosynthetic mechanisms that may be applied to closed ecological systems. The potential use of higher plants in bioregenerating systems, especially as gas exchange mechanisms, their broader use as food supplement, and other possible uses were presented. The regeneration, by aerobic and anaerobic means, of solid and liquid wastes with many potential approaches, such as incin ration or storage as applied specifically to closed bioregenerating systems, was presen ed T HE FINAL EC ICAL SE SION INCLUDED SIX PAPERS ON NUTRITIONAL SUPPORT FROM BIOREGENERATI G Y TEM T POTENTIAL USE OF SELECTED ALGAE AND FUNGI AS NUTRIENT SOURCES WAS CONSIDERED, THE BIOECOLOGY OF THE IGES IVE PROCESS WAS PRESENTED, AND THE SPECIFIC NUTRITIONAL VALUE OF ALGAE AND SELECTED FUNGI WAS GIVEN. Book Chemical Engineering in Medicine and Biology

Download or read book Chemical Engineering in Medicine and Biology written by Daniel Hershey and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'lbere is much discussion today concerning "Bioengineering" (or "Biomedical Engineering"). It is not exactly clear what these names signify, particularly in chemical engineering. Some have suggested retreading the old war horse "Biochemical Engineering" (or was it "Biomedical Chemical Engineering). In an effort to demonstrate the on-going activities of chemical engineers in the life science area, we accepted the invitation of the Industrial and Engineering Division of the American Chemical Society to organize the 33rd Annual Chemical Engineering Symposium. We decided to call the symposium, Chemical Engineering in Medicine and Biology, and hence avoided the problem of having to decide which "bio" prefix to use. Many chemical engineers in the academic and industrial world were contacted. From these contacts and a good deal of publicity arose the Symposium. The two-day meeting was held at the University of Cincinnati in the Losantiville Room of the Student Union Building on October 20-21, 1966. Twenty-one papers were presented on topics relating chemical engineering to medicine and biology. Tile papers were representation al of the scope of the activities across the country with presenters coming from Washington, California, Massachusetts, New York, South Carolina, Wisconsin, Iowa, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Indiana and Texas. TOpics ranged over blood flow properties, diffusion in blood phenomena, ix INTRODUCTION X mass transfer in the eye, artificial kidney analysis, separation of bacteria by ion exchange, mathematical modeling of drug distribution, carbon dioxide respiration, photosynthetic kinetics, water in frozen tissues, electrophoretic separation of proteins, and outerspace re search on life support systems.

Book Atmosphere in Space Cabins and Closed Environments

Download or read book Atmosphere in Space Cabins and Closed Environments written by Karl Kammermeyer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MANNED SPACE FLIGHT introduces into space travel parameters that are unique. Man can live without food for a reasonably long period; without water, the period becomes quite a bit shorter; but without air, the result-almost instantaneous-is death. This would make the atmosphere the most important consideration. In fact, however, man needs all three components: oxygen, water, and food; and if anyone of them failS, he is doomed. With our space efforts approaching trips of several weeks in length and certainly heading for month-long journeys, it is most appropriate to ask: Are we ready to provide an adequate atmo spheric milieu for the astronauts? The present volume represents the first integrated attempt to answer this question on a scientific level and on a broad basis of physical and mechanical, biological, biochemical and medical factors. The main features of this work were presented at a symposium of the Division of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry of the American Chemical Society, held in Atlantic City on Septem ber 13, 1965. The volume is an expanded and reorganized treatise based on, but not merely proceeding from, the symposium. Obviously, medical aspects are of paramount importance. A down-to-earth appraisal of the status quo, presented by Dr. E. M. Roth, shows that the problem of 100% oxygen atmosphere still is beset with some uncertainty in the 200 to 500 mm. total cabin pressure range. Additionally, attention is called to inherent dangers of greatly increased flammability in such an atmosphere.

Book Biology of Conidial Fungi

Download or read book Biology of Conidial Fungi written by Garry T. Cole and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 681 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biology of Conidial Fungi, Volume 2 presents detailed considerations of many facets of conidial fungi. Organized into four parts, this volume begins with the discussion on the four categories of clinical infections of man caused by this organism. It then describes the ultrastructure, development, physiology, biochemistry, and genetics of conidial fungi. It also explains the techniques for investigation of conidial fungi, including isolation, cultivation, and maintenance. Techniques for examining developmental and ultrastructural aspects of conidial fungi are shown as well. This volume will fill some gaps in the knowledge of anamorphs and serve as a useful reference to advanced students who probably encounter such type of fungi.
