Book A New Biology for the 21st Century

Download or read book A New Biology for the 21st Century written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-11-20 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now more than ever, biology has the potential to contribute practical solutions to many of the major challenges confronting the United States and the world. A New Biology for the 21st Century recommends that a "New Biology" approach-one that depends on greater integration within biology, and closer collaboration with physical, computational, and earth scientists, mathematicians and engineers-be used to find solutions to four key societal needs: sustainable food production, ecosystem restoration, optimized biofuel production, and improvement in human health. The approach calls for a coordinated effort to leverage resources across the federal, private, and academic sectors to help meet challenges and improve the return on life science research in general.

Book Biology and therapeutic potential of brown adipose tissue

Download or read book Biology and therapeutic potential of brown adipose tissue written by Patrick Seale and published by Frontiers E-books. This book was released on 2013-06-03 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brown adipose tissue (BAT) has long been recognized as a key thermogenic tissue in eutherian mammals. Brown fat cells contain large numbers of highly specialized mitochondria that oxidize fat and carbohydrate to produce heat. This metabolic inefficiency is due to the presence of Ucp1 in the inner mitochondrial membrane of brown fat cells which dissociates the electrochemical gradient from ATP production. BAT presumably evolved to protect animals against hypothermia in response to cold exposure. However, energy expended by BAT has the added benefit of counteracting obesity and associated metabolic disease, at least in rodents. A very large number of studies have consistently shown that mice carrying increased amounts of active brown fat are lean and healthy. Until recently, it was generally believed that the amount of brown fat tissue was negligible in healthy adult humans. However, PET imaging studies have refuted this notion, and revealed the existence of active BAT in most, if not all, adult humans. Notably, there is a very strong inverse correlation between the amount of activated BAT and fatness in humans. Moreover, activated brown fat is lost with ageing, which also correlates with tendency to gain weight. The field must now address whether variation in brown fat activity is a cause or consequence of weight gain. Brown fat cells are localized in discrete depots of BAT and are also found as clusters interspersed in white fat tissues. The prevalence and function of these so-called “brite” (brown in white) cells in humans remains unknown. The development of strategies to increase the amount and/or activity of brown fat may hold exciting prospects for the treatment of obesity and its associated health consequences. In this Research Topics issue, we would propose to examine the following areas related to brown fat biology: 1. Development of brown and “brite” cells (including: historical/evolutionary perspective, transcriptional pathways, developmental origins) 2. Pathways that influence brown fat cell development (BMP7, TZDs, Prostaglandins, FGF21) 3. Activation of brown fat - focus on sympathetic and sensory innervation (signaling by beta-adrenergic receptors, nerve-fat connections 4. Brown fat thermogenesis in response to cold, diet and hibernation 5. Brown fat in humans including: human brown fat precursors, methods for imaging, factors that influence prevalence, relationship between body mass/obesity and amount of brown fat. 6. Brown fat mitochondria including mechanism of uncoupling (Ucp1 history/structure/function, mitochondrial biogenesis.

Book Insect Biology in The Future

Download or read book Insect Biology in The Future written by Michael Locke and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 995 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insect Biology in the Future: ""VBW 80"" contains essays presented to Sir Vincent Wigglesworth during his 80th year. Wigglesworth is fairly designated as the founding father and remarkable leader of insect physiology. His papers and other works significantly contribute to this field of study. This book, dedicated to him, underlines the value of insect material in approaching a wide spectrum of biological issues. The essays in this book tackle the insects' physiology, including their evolution and dominance. The papers also discuss the various avenues of water loss and gain as interrelated components of overall water balance in land arthropods. This reference suggests possible areas for further research mainly at the whole animal level. It also describes the fat body, hemolymph, endocrine control of vitellogenin synthesis, reproduction, growth, hormones, chemistry, defense, and survival of insects. Other topics of importance include cell communication and pattern formation in insects; plant-insect interaction; and insecticides.

Book Comprehensive Insights into Mitral Valve Prolapse From biology to future perspectives of treatment passing through diagnostic tools surgical techniques and transcatheter options

Download or read book Comprehensive Insights into Mitral Valve Prolapse From biology to future perspectives of treatment passing through diagnostic tools surgical techniques and transcatheter options written by Christophe Tribouilloy and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-09-11 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mitral valve prolapse (MVP), consisting of an abnormal protrusion of mitral leaflets into the left atrium, is the main cause of severe mitral regurgitation and it often requires surgical or interventional correction. It mainly represents a typical adult disease with an average prevalence in industrialized countries ranging from 2 to 8%, but even the pediatric population may be affected showing specific features concerning both anatomy and treatment. Although its existence and clinical characteristics are known for several decades, every aspect of this pathological condition is in continuous evolution, being the subject of biologists’, cardiologists’ and surgeons’ active research. The aim of the present Research Topic is to address the MVP entity in its completeness, trying to describe all actual knowledge concerning molecular mechanisms, different clinical presentations (fibroelastic degeneration in elderly people or Barlow disease in young patients), diagnostic findings and tools (mainly represented by echocardiography and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance), their specific application to newly developed transcatheter and minimally invasive treatments, indications, surgical management and interventional strategies. For all these big chapters, special attention will be addressed to show temporal knowledge evolution and new elements acquisition, since the central message is that MVP is in flux and far from full comprehension.
