This book was released on 2019-05-01 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On June 27-28, 2018, the U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (the National Academies) convened an international workshop in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, on developing norms for the provision of laboratories in low-resource contexts. The U.S. Department of State's Biosecurity Engagement Program requested that the National Academies organize this workshop to engage an international group of organizations that provide funding for construction, upgrades, and maintenance of biological laboratories in countries without the means to build such labs themselves. Twenty-one people from 19 organizations participated. The intent was to advance the conversation about the identification and application of guiding principles and common norms for use by these organizations in their grants, partnerships, and aid. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.

Book Laboratory Biorisk Management

Download or read book Laboratory Biorisk Management written by Reynolds M. Salerno and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-03-30 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past two decades bioscience facilities worldwide have experienced multiple safety and security incidents, including many notable incidents at so-called sophisticated facilities in North America and Western Europe. This demonstrates that a system based solely on biosafety levels and security regulations may not be sufficient. Setting the stage for a substantively different approach for managing the risks of working with biological agents in laboratories, Laboratory Biorisk Management: Biosafety and Biosecurity introduces the concept of biorisk management--a new paradigm that encompasses both laboratory biosafety and biosecurity. The book also provides laboratory managers and directors with the information and technical tools needed for its implementation. The basis for this new paradigm is a three-pronged, multi-disciplinary model of assessment, mitigation, and performance (the AMP model). The application of the methodologies, criteria, and guidance outlined in the book helps to reduce the risk of laboratories becoming the sources of infectious disease outbreaks. This is a valuable resource for those seeking to embrace and implement biorisk management systems in their facilities and operations, including the biological research, clinical diagnostic, and production/manufacturing communities.

Book Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories

Download or read book Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories written by Department of Health and Human Services and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL) quickly became the cornerstone of biosafety practice and policy in the United States upon first publication in 1984. Historically, the information in this publication has been advisory is nature even though legislation and regulation, in some circumstances, have overtaken it and made compliance with the guidance provided mandatory. We wish to emphasize that the 5th edition of the BMBL remains an advisory document recommending best practices for the safe conduct of work in biomedical and clinical laboratories from a biosafety perspective, and is not intended as a regulatory document though we recognize that it will be used that way by some. This edition of the BMBL includes additional sections, expanded sections on the principles and practices of biosafety and risk assessment; and revised agent summary statements and appendices. We worked to harmonize the recommendations included in this edition with guidance issued and regulations...

Download or read book Occipational Health and Safelty in the Chemical and Biological Laboratory written by Maria Pai Gatto and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Occupational health and safety refers to the whole series of prevention measures and protection, technical measures, organizational solutions, and procedures that must be adopted by the employer to avoid dangerous situations for their employees. While it is true that total security exists in the absence of dangers, and this is a difficult concept to translate into real life, in the absolute sense, it is also true that the application of safety rules makes the occurrence of adverse events and incidents more difficult, and it always results in a better quality of life. Each analytical laboratory should provide its own "Good Laboratory Practices" and procedures must be the result of the experience and must be known, correctly interpreted, shared, and respected by all the staff of laboratory. The idea of creating a manual on occupational health risks in a chemical and biological analysis laboratory derives from the need to provide technical support for the various figures involved in activities requiring the safe use of chemical and biological agents in lab analysis. The purpose of this work is to provide workers with more detailed information on the main possible causes of risk in an analysis laboratory, as well as on the most appropriate means of individual and collective protection to be used at work. The manual also gives an overview of main laboratory safety standards pertaining to clothing and equipment as well as procedures and lab design. This manual can be a valuable approach to knowledge of laboratory risks in order to eliminate or at least minimize them. Finally, the handbook can also be a support to the drafting of internal safety standards, both for general and specific procedures.

Book excerpt: During July 10-13, 2011, 68 participants from 32 countries gathered in Istanbul, Turkey for a workshop organized by the United States National Research Council on Anticipating Biosecurity Challenges of the Global Expansion of High-containment Biological Laboratories. The United States Department of State's Biosecurity Engagement Program sponsored the workshop, which was held in partnership with the Turkish Academy of Sciences. The international workshop examined biosafety and biosecurity issues related to the design, construction, maintenance, and operation of high-containment biological laboratories- equivalent to United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention biological safety level 3 or 4 labs. Although these laboratories are needed to characterize highly dangerous human and animal pathogens, assist in disease surveillance, and produce vaccines, they are complex systems with inherent risks. Biosecurity Challenges of the Global Expansion of High-Containment Biological Laboratories summarizes the workshop discussion, which included the following topics: Technological options to meet diagnostic, research, and other goals; Laboratory construction and commissioning; Operational maintenance to provide sustainable capabilities, safety, and security; and Measures for encouraging a culture of responsible conduct. Workshop attendees described the history and current challenges they face in their individual laboratories. Speakers recounted steps they were taking to improve safety and security, from running training programs to implementing a variety of personnel reliability measures. Many also spoke about physical security, access controls, and monitoring pathogen inventories. Workshop participants also identified tensions in the field and suggested possible areas for action.
