Book Technical Photography high Speed blast Biology

Download or read book Technical Photography high Speed blast Biology written by M. A. Palmer and published by . This book was released on 1956 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this project was to provide the photographic requirements for Civil Effects Test Group projects concerned with the biological phenomena of blast. Preshot and postshot photographs were obtained of animals and/or structures. High-speed motion picture sequences of group-shelter interiors containing animals were attempted. Medical photographs of gross specimens were obtained at the time of autopsy of experimental animals. Documentary and technical photographs were obtained for a project studying missile behavior. Styrofoam cells showing evidence of missile penetration were photographed in a specially constructed grid providing a system of coordinates for accurate reference. A recommendation for such a project to maintain on-site processing facilities was made. Several conclusions were drawn regarding changes necessary to better assure motion picture results under extreme circumstances.

Book Primary Photo Processes in Biology and Medicine

Download or read book Primary Photo Processes in Biology and Medicine written by R. V. Bensasson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently there have been major developments in the experimental techniques available for the study of the primary events following the absorption of ultra-violet and visible radiation by biological systems. These techniques, which include absorption, emission, resonance Raman, electron spin resonance, nuclear magnetic resonance and photoacoustic spectroscopies, can be used to study the fate of transient species with lifetimes ranging from seconds to nanoseconds and extending in some cases, such as laser flash photolysis, to pico 12 15 (10- S)- and even femtoseconds (10- s). In parallel with these developments there has been a dramatic increase in the use of light in medicine via the direct photochemical alteration of endogenous molecules (phototherapy) or via the photoactivation of drugs in the skin or other tissue (photochemotherapy). Thus neonatal hyperbili rubinaemia can be routinely treated by phototherapy and psoriasis is frequently treated by PUVA photochemotherapy. A promising new photo chemotherapy used the phototoxicity of porphyrin drugs activated by red light to destroy solid malignant tumors. While some of the overall qualitative effects of such treatments are known, only recently have we begun to understand the associated molecular mechanisms. The primary molecular processes involve short-lived species. The pur pose of this Advanced Study Institute was to review some newer experi mental techniques for the study of such species, the application of these techniques to biological and medical systems and to examine the value of such information in phototherapeutic situations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A riveting collection of photographs capturing wild animals in their native habitats and demonstrating the importance of camera traps. In Candid Creatures, the first major book to reveal the secret lives of animals through motion-sensitive game cameras, biologist Roland Kays has assembled over 600remarkable photographs. Drawing from archives of millions of color and night-vision photographs collected by hundreds of researchers, Kays has selected images that show the unique perspectives of wildlife from throughout the world. Using these photos, he tells the stories of scientific discoveries that camera traps have enabled, such as living proof of species thought to have been extinct and details of predator-prey interactions. Each image captures a moment frozen in the camera’s flash as animals move through their wild habitats. Kays also discusses how scientists use camera traps to address conservation issues, creating solutions that allow humans and wild animals to coexist. More than just a collection of amazing animal pictures, the book’s text, maps, and illustrations work together to describe the latest findings in the fast-moving field of wildlife research. Candid Creatures is a testament to how the explosion of game cameras around the world has revolutionized the study of animal ecology. The powerful combination of pictures and stories of discovery will fascinate anyone interested in science, nature, wildlife biology, or photography. “Full of fabulous pictures of weird and wonderful creatures . . . [Candid Creatures is] loaded with information and carries a strong conservation message.” —Conservation Biology
