Book excerpt: In 1986, in response to concerns that overfishing had reduced the Arctic charr stocks in the Pond Inlet area, a multi-year program was initiated, with the Salmon River the first stock to be assessed. The study was initiated by gillnetting at a number of locations throughout the watershed and by sampling the subsistence fishery at the mouth of the river. In 1987 charr were gillnetted and tagged at two different locations on the river. Prior to this, a biological sample was taken in 1979 (subsistence fishery) and in 1980 (experimental gillnetting). This report presents the results of these programs.

Book excerpt: The annual migration of Arctic charr to spawning andoverwintering grounds on the Rat River provides the focus for animportant domestic fishery for residents of Aklavik and FortMcPherson, Northwest Territories. Biological data (age, length, weight, sex, maturity, fecundity, condition) for Arctic charrcaptured by a fish weir and trap on the Rat River during 1983 arepresented in this report. A total of 1,312 charr were capturedduring August 1983 of which 752 were spawners and 560 were non-spawners. Enumeration of the 1983 upstream migration wasincomplete since high water levels damaged the weir. Charrsampled had a mean length of 413 mm, mean round weight of 1,008 gand a mean age of 7 years.

Book excerpt: "Concern by Aklavik residents and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) for the charr population, led to the closure of the Big Fish River charr fishery in June 1987 and to the initiation of population surveys. North/South Consultants conducted a census of upstream migrating charr in August and September of 1987. They concluded that the population may have declined by 25 to 50% since 1972, attributable primarily to over-harvesting (MacDonell 1988). To obtain a second estimate, a stock assessment was conducted in 1988. The objectives were two-fold: 1) census the Cache Creek charr population, and 2) collect basic biological data.
