Book Geoecology of Antarctic Ice Free Coastal Landscapes

Download or read book Geoecology of Antarctic Ice Free Coastal Landscapes written by L. Beyer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research in Antarctica in the past two decades has fundamentally changed our perceptions of the southern continent. This volume describes typical terrestrial environments of the maritime and continental Antarctic. Life and chemical processes are restricted to small ranges of ambient temperature, availability of water and nutrients. This is reflected not only in life processes, but also in those of weathering and pedogenesis. The volume focuses on interactions between plants, animals and soils. It includes aspects of climate change, soil development and biology, as well as above- and below-ground results of interdisciplinary research projects combining data from botany, zoology, microbiology, pedology, and soil ecology.

Book Antarctic Peninsula Compendium

Download or read book Antarctic Peninsula Compendium written by Ron Naveen and published by . This book was released on 2011-03 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1997, the Compendium is an important reference tool for everyone who works in or visits the Antarctic Peninsula - setting forth updated site-descriptive information, census data, species presence/absence data, and regional maps compiled by the Antarctic Site Inventory project since 1994. The Inventory is operated by the US non-profit science and educational organization Oceanites, Inc., the only non-profit, publicly supported, science project working in Antarctica, and the only project monitoring and analysing environmental changes throughout the vastly warming Antarctic Peninsula ecosystem, where it's warming faster - or as fast - as any other location on Earth. The new, 3rd edition covers the 142 sites visited and censused by Antarctic Site Inventory researchers in 17 field seasons through February 2011.

Book Modeling and Practice of Erosion and Sediment Transport under Change

Download or read book Modeling and Practice of Erosion and Sediment Transport under Change written by Mohamed Meddi and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-09-17 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate and anthropogenic changes impact the conditions of erosion and sediment transport in rivers. Rainfall variability and, in many places, the increase of rainfall intensity have a direct impact on rainfall erosivity. Increasing changes in demography have led to the acceleration of land cover changes in natural areas, as well as in cultivated areas, and, sometimes, in degraded areas and desertified landscapes. These anthropogenized landscapes are more sensitive to erosion. On the other hand, the increase in the number of dams in watersheds traps a great portion of sediment fluxes, which do not reach the sea in the same amount, nor at the same quality, with consequences on coastal geomorphodynamics. This book is dedicated to studies on sediment fluxes from continental areas to coastal areas, as well as observation, modeling, and impact analysis at different scales from watershed slopes to the outputs of large river basins. This book is concentrated on a number of keywords: “erosion” and “sediment transport”, “model” and “practice”, and “change”. The keywords are briefly discussed with respect to the relevant literature. The contributions in this book address observations and models based on laboratory and field data, allowing researchers to make use of such resources in practice under changing conditions.
