Book Physical Methods for Inorganic Biochemistry

Download or read book Physical Methods for Inorganic Biochemistry written by John R. Wright and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is intended for students and professionals in diverse areas of the biological and biochemical sciences. It is oriented to those who are unfamiliar with the use of physical methods in studies of the biological elements. We hope the reader will find the material a helpful reference for other volumes of this series as well as the general literature, and some may see ways to adopt these techniques in their own pursuits. Every effort has been made to avoid an abstruse presentation. It should be clear that one individual cannot be expert in all the disciplines considered here (and the authors recognize that fact with sin cere humility). As may be expected of an introductory reference, most of our attention was focused on the commonly used methods. To balance this, we have included a few examples of approaches which are promising but relatively undeveloped at this time. Also, an emphasis has been placed on element selectivity. It is impossible to envision the course of future events, and a volume which deals with instrumentation is especially prone to become outdated. Nevertheless, any valid approach to a scientific question should be applicable indefinitely.

Book Electron Paramagnetic Resonance in Biochemistry and Medicine

Download or read book Electron Paramagnetic Resonance in Biochemistry and Medicine written by Rafik Galimzyanovich Sajfutdinov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-11 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectroscopy - also sometimes termed Electron Spin Resonance spectroscopy - has manifold potential uses in biochemistry and medicine. The paramount importance of EPR spectroscopy applied to biological tissues and fluids is that it identifies the changes in redox processes that contribute to disease. EPR spectroscopy has come a long way from its original use to detect malignant tumors. For example, the development and later refinement of methods of low-temperature registration of biological tissues widened the scope of EPR spectroscopy. Innovations made possible by the introduction of spin labels, probes, and traps made EPR spectroscopy ever more applicable to biochemistry and medicine, to the point where in vivo studies are being carefully considered. This comprehensive book discusses spectra of many tissues and bodily fluids, and the quantitative nature of paramagnetic centers in both normal individuals and patients suffering from a variety of diseases. Special attention is given to the EPR examination of bio-molecules, such as enzymes, polypeptides, vitamins, lipids, hydrocarbons, etc., which play an essential role in human activity. This book will be of great interest to physicians specializing in many different areas. Similarly, biologists, biochemists, biophysicists, and chemists will find this book very useful. It has also been written so that it may be used as a textbook at graduate level.

Book Electron Spin Resonance ESR Applications in Organic and Bioorganic Materials

Download or read book Electron Spin Resonance ESR Applications in Organic and Bioorganic Materials written by B. Catoire and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: E.S.R. techniques which are mature from a fundamental point of view. now constitute a routine investigation tool in chemistry as well as in biophysics in order to study and to follow the behaviour of radical species. Among the practical applications. let us mention for instance : -diffusion phenomena (solid -solid. liquid -solid such as the diffusion of molecules through membranes. films fibers ... ). -study of radical species to improve the elaboration of materials with high added value (composites). -detection of ionised food. -liquid crystals. polymers. -radiochemistry. -targetting of drugs. toxicology. A better understanding of basic phenomena allows to optimize industrial products and processes applied as well as in advanced fields as in well established ones. The high sensivity of ESR Spectroscopy and its derived specific techniques (spin labelling. spin probe. spin trapping ... ) offer information on the fme morphological structure of the matter as well as on its behaviour under various treatments otherwise not available. A Symposium was organized in Lyon (France) in January 1990 to promote the use of ESR. Its originality was to deal with the practical applications of ESR to organic and bioorganic materials. The scope of this meeting was to enlarge the field of application from basic research to more applied subjects and this may concern industrial as well as academic researchers. Moreover. the purpose of this symposium was to promote exchanges between European specialists working in public or private areas.

Book Pulsed Electron Electron Double Resonance

Download or read book Pulsed Electron Electron Double Resonance written by Yuri D. Tsvetkov and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-12-28 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the basic theory and techniques, as well as various applications of pulsed electron–electron double resonance (PELDOR or DEER). This electron paramagnetic resonance technique is able to measure the distances and the distribution of distances between electron spins in the 1.5–15 nanometer scale; to determine the geometry of spin-labeled molecules; to estimate the number of interacting spins in spin clusters; and to characterize the spatial distribution of paramagnetic centers. As a result, PELDOR is now a popular method in EPR spectroscopy, particularly in the context of biologically important systems and soft matter and is also applied to problems in physical chemistry, biochemistry, polymers, soft matter and materials. Enabling readers to gain an understanding of the fundamentals of the PELDOR methods and an appreciation of the opportunities PELDOR provides, the book helps readers solve their own physical and biochemical problems.

Download or read book Electron Spin Resonance written by John Wertz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the twenty-five years since its discovery by Zavoiskii, the technique of electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy has provided detailed struc tural information on a variety of paramagnetic organic and inorganic sys tems. It is doubtful that even much later than 1945 any chemist would have been so bold as to predict the great diversity of systems which have proved amenable to study by ESR spectroscopy. In this book we have attempted to provide numerous examples of actual ESR spectra to illus trate the wide scope of application. No attempt has been made to present a comprehensive coverage of the literature in any field, but references to reviews and key articles are given throughout the book. This introductory textbook had its origin in lecture notes prepared for an American Chemical Society short course on electron spin resonance. The present version is the result of extensive revision and expansion of the original notes. Experience with such courses has convinced us that there are large numbers of chemists, physicists, and biologists who have a strong interest in electron spin resonance. The mathematical training of most of the short-course students is limited to calculus. Their contact with theories of molecular structure is largely limited to that obtained in an elementary physical chemistry course. It is to an audience of such background that this book is directed.

Book Bioradicals Detected by Esr Spectroscopy

Download or read book Bioradicals Detected by Esr Spectroscopy written by Hiroaki Ohya-Nishiguchi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1995-11-29 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the historical background as well as the up-to-date developments in, and guidelines for, bioradicals and ESR research. Bioradicals Detected by ESR Spectroscopy is a newly coined term which encompasses paramagnetic species in biological systems, such as active oxygen radicals and transition metal ions. Research on the structures and functions of bioradicals have been attracting growing attention in the biological sciences, resulting in an increasing demand for comprehensive studies which allow researchers from many fields to understand the true importance of these species. ESR spectroscopy is of great interest to interdisciplinary research and is applied in many fields, ranging from physics and chemistry to biology and medicine. New ESR technologies of multiquantum ESR, STM-ESR and open-space ESR, several ESR imaging techniques, spin trapping and new methods in in vivo spin trapping are all described and discussed in this volume. In addition, it demonstrates the applications of ESR in food and medical sciences, i.e., the estimation and characterization of the antioxidant ability of foods and food components and the elucidation of the underlying chemical mechanisms.
