Book excerpt: Sarojini Naidu was a prolific writer and speaker, publishing three collections of poetry during her life and delivered many rousing speeches throughout the freedom struggle and after India gained Independence. This book compiles her best-known work, as well as letters she wrote throughout her life to Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Rabindranath Tagore and others, to provide a glimpse into the kind of person she was and the ideas she believed in. Through these pages, we can witness her innermost thoughts and feelings, and the important role she played in shaping the country's freedom struggle and its ideas as a young nation, particularly through rousing speeches on the Education of Indian Women and the Battle of Freedom is Over, which were broadcast over the All India Radio on 15 August 1947.

Book The Golden Threshold

Download or read book The Golden Threshold written by Sarojini Naidu and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is at my persuasion that these poems are now published. The earliest of them were read to me in London in 1896, when the writer was seventeen; the later ones were sent to me from India in 1904, when she was twenty-five; and they belong, I think, almost wholly to those two periods. As they seemed to me to have an individual beauty of their own, I thought they ought to be published. The writer hesitated. "Your letter made me very proud and very sad," she wrote. "Is it possible that I have written verses that are 'filled with beauty,' and is it possible that you really think them worthy of being given to the world? You know how high my ideal of Art is; and to me my poor casual little poems seem to be less than beautiful—I mean with that final enduring beauty that I desire." And, in another letter, she writes: "I am not a poet really. I have the vision and the desire, but not the voice. If I could write just one poem full of beauty and the spirit of greatness, I should be exultantly silent for ever; but I sing just as the birds do, and my songs are as ephemeral." It is for this bird-like quality of song, it seems to me, that they are to be valued. They hint, in a sort of delicately evasive way, at a rare temperament, the temperament of a woman of the East, finding expression through a Western language and under partly Western influences. They do not express the whole of that temperament; but they express, I think, its essence; and there is an Eastern magic in them. Sarojini Chattopadhyay was born at Hyderabad on February 13, 1879. Her father, Dr. Aghorenath Chattopadhyay, is descended from the ancient family of Chattorajes of Bhramangram, who were noted throughout Eastern Bengal as patrons of Sanskrit learning, and for their practice of Yoga. He took his degree of Doctor of Science at the University of Edinburgh in 1877, and afterwards studied brilliantly at Bonn. On his return to India he founded the Nizam College at Hyderabad, and has since laboured incessantly, and at great personal sacrifice, in the cause of education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As we speak of Sarojini Naidu ÔThe Nightingale of IndiaÕ, we immediately recau of a woman with multifaceted qualities. A daughter, who upheld the pro-women ideologies of her father and did not let the ideologies down despite being born in the contemporary orthodox society. A poetess, not a single word of whose appeared hollow; rather whose rich dreams embroidered in rainbow colours, reflected a mind that felt the deep anguish of her country and its people. She was a great freedom fighter who bore the brunt of foreign atrocities stoically, despite being sensitive and soft. She personified a great administrator, who silenced the critics of women by administering the largest state in India, Uttar Pradesh, effectively and successfully as its first Governor. While at the same time she presented to the world an example of the power in women. Ever since Amir moved out of the basti and started going to a posh private school, it seems like he and Sarojini have nothing in common. Then Sarojini finds out about the Right to Education, a law that might help her get a free seat at Amir’s school – or, better yet, convince him to come back to a new and improved version of the government school they went to together. As she struggles to keep her best friend, Sarojini gets help from some unexpected characters, including Deepti, a feisty classmate who lives at a construction site; Vimala Madam, a human rights lawyer who might also be an evil genius; and Mrs. Sarojini Naidu, a long-dead freedom fighter who becomes Sarojini’s secret pen pal. Told through letters to Mrs. Naidu, this is the story of how Sarojini learns to fight – for her friendship, her family, and her future. Published by Zubaan.

Book Sarojini Naidu

Download or read book Sarojini Naidu written by Anu Kumar and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2014-02-05 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘In the battle for liberty, fear is the one unforgivable sin’ She always wanted to be wild and free like the birds, but she became much more: the Bulbul-e-Hind or the Nightingale of India. A child prodigy, Sarojini Naidu née Chattopadhyay grew to be so fearless and gifted that she was an example to all. Gopal Krishna Gokhale led her to devote her song and speech, thought and dreams to ‘the Motherland’ and she never wavered in leading or following the cause, right into jail several times. Wise, lyrical and feisty, Sarojini Naidu brought intelligence, energy and intensity to the independence movement. She was the first woman to become President of the Indian National Congress, and later the Governor of Uttar Pradesh. Her frequent ill health never subdued her spirit. Her irreverence was legendary – she was the one who gave Mahatma Gandhi the endearing nickname of ‘Mickey Mouse’. A staunch patriot, a unique poet, an efficient administrator, a progressive reformer and a women’s activist, she was hailed as a fiery public speaker. It is not surprising then that Women’s Day in India is celebrated on the birthday of Sarojini Naidu, a heroine then, and an inspiration now and forever. This book brings together her outstanding work and words, and highlights the main tenets of her life. From her stellar role in the difficult times she lived in, you too can learn to be a little bit like Sarojini Naidu.

Would that change when she married another man? His infant daughter had her fist in her mouth, and Arun removed it to gaze into eyes, the colour of indigo and could not look away. What he did not know was that she had the gift of clairvoyance; she would warn him of events, which would change their lives irrevocably. Prerana’s conflict-ridden relationship with her mother had left scars even time could not erase. Now she had to prevent her mother from usurping her child. Who would win this age-old battle? Twelve stories about people who will seem familiar. You know them all too well; perhaps some of them are you.
