Book Celebrating a Century of the American Anthropological Association

Download or read book Celebrating a Century of the American Anthropological Association written by Regna Darnell and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past century the American Anthropological Association (AAA) has borne witness to profound social, cultural, and technical changes, transformations that have affected anthropologists and the people they work with across the planet. In response to such global changes, anthropology continues to evolve into an increasingly complex and sophisticated discipline with a dynamic range of flourishing subfields. This volume contains the memorable stories of the seventy-seven men and women who have led the AAA during the past century. The list of the association's presidents reads like a roster of influential scholars from various specializations within anthropology. Their histories cumulatively reflect the trends in interpretive thought and fieldwork methodology that have emerged during the past ten decades. For each president the book provides a photograph and a biography replete with personal anecdotes, career highlights, and information about his or her contributions to the development of the discipline of anthropology. Important works by each president are listed separately in the back of the volume. An introduction by Regna Darnell and Frederic W. Gleach summarizes the first century of the AAA and contextualizes the individual stories.

Download or read book The Great Paleolithic War written by David J. Meltzer and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2015-11-03 with total page 691 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Only a few years after the discovery in Europe in the late 1850s that humanity had roots predating history and the Biblical chronicles, and reaching deep into the Pleistocene, came the suggestion that North American prehistory might be just as old. And why not? There seemed to be an "exact synchronism [of geological strata] between Europe and America," and so by extension there ought to be a "parallelism as to the antiquity of man." That triggered an eager search for traces of the people who may have occupied North America in the recesses of the Ice Age. "The Great Paleolithic War "is the history of the longstanding and bitter dispute in North America over whether people had arrived here in Ice Age times.

Book The Life and Work of W B Nickerson 1865 1926

Download or read book The Life and Work of W B Nickerson 1865 1926 written by Ian Dyck and published by University of Ottawa Press. This book was released on 2016-11-02 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During his spare time, William Baker Nickerson investigated sites from New England to the Midwest and into the Canadian Prairies. In the course of exploration, he created an elegant and detailed record of discoveries and developed methods which later archaeologists recognized as being ahead of their time. By middle age, he was en route to becoming a professional contract archaeologist. However, after a very good start, during World War I archaeological commissions disappeared and failed to recover for many years afterward. Consequently, in spite of heroic efforts, Nickerson was unable to restore his scientific career and died in obscurity. His life story spans the transition of North American archaeology from museums and historical societies to universities, throwing light on a phase of history that is little known.

Book The Museum of Other People

Download or read book The Museum of Other People written by Adam Kuper and published by Profile Books. This book was released on 2023-02-02 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A TLS BEST BOOK OF 2023 'A formidable work' Nigel Barley, author of The Innocent Anthropologist 'Should be required reading' Richard Lambert, Financial Times 'A magnificent, moving survey' Felipe Fernández-Armesto, TLS This is a history of the ways in which foreign and prehistoric peoples were represented in museums of anthropology, with their displays of arts and artifacts, their dioramas, their special exhibitions, and their arrays of skulls and skeletons. Originally created as colonial enterprises, what is the purpose of these places today? What should they do with the items in their custodianship? And how can they help us to understand and appreciate other cultures? Informed by a lifetime of research and scholarship, this subtle and original work tackles painful questions about race, colonialism, difference, and cultural appropriation. The result is a must-read for anyone concerned with the coexistence of different modes of life.
