Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biographical Illustrations of Westminster Abbey Upon the origin of Westminster Abbey much has been written, and yet but little that can be said to be probable, is known. The monks traced its history far back into the ages of antiquity, and confused their accounts, as well with the fables of Paganism, as the miracles of Christianity: even the chronicles of more recent authors are replete with particulars which are now rejected by common consent as false and impossible. From the many legends that have involved the subject in obscurity, all that has been collected with any pretensions to sense and reality, is briefly this: - Sebert, a king of the Eastern Saxons, who, with his uncle Ethelbert, was converted to Christianity by St. Austin, and died in the year 616, cleared away the ruins of a temple in honour of Apollo, which had been thrown down by an earthquake, and stood west of the city of London, on Thorney Island, and there built a church in memory of St. Peter. To one part of this version, however, Sir Christopher Wren* has objected, inasmuch as, if the present structure had ever been raised upon the foundations of a Roman edifice, some fragments of the architecture, common to such works, must almost of necessity have remained about the walls; and he examined these diligently when he was commissioned to repair the Abbey, in the reign of William and Mary, but not a stone or relic of the description alluded to could he discover even in the oldest parts of the masonry. Nor are the stories which have been handed down to us respecting the consecration of the Abbey less conflicting or more natural. King Sebert is said to have ordered the solemnity to be performed by Mellitus, then bishop of London; but the ceremony, according to others, was eminently miraculous. For it has been reported, that, on the night preceding the day appointed for the consecration, St. Peter descended from heaven, in disguise, and, alighting at Lambeth, was rowed over to the island, then deeply flooded round from heavy rain, by the waterman of the ferry, who was also a fisherman. Upon his landing, he was joined by an embassy of winged angels, and amidst the refulgence of extraordinary lights from heaven, and a loud chorus of sweet music, in person baptized the new building holy! To the fisherman he then revealed his name, and the nature of his being, commissioning him at the same time to let Bishop Mellitus know all he had seen and heard. Farther to convince the astonished man of the divine interposition, St. Peter is recorded to have blessed his net, and given him a miraculous draught of salmon, a species of fish in catching which he also promised that no Thames fisherman should ever fail, so long as the fraternity approved the piety of their intentions, by presenting every tenth fish that should come to net for the use and benefit of the new church. Incredible as this tale appears, there are two royal charters still upon record which afford conclusive evidence of the implicit belief which it continued to receive for a long period of time. The first of these was one given by king Edgar, which recites that the Abbey church was consecrated by no less a personage than St. Peter, the prince of Apostles, who also named it to his own honour. The other is a charter from king Edward the Confessor, which declares, with minute care, that the Abbey church of Westminster was dedicated by St. Peter himself, with the attendance of angels, by the impression of the holy cross, and the anointment of the holy chrism. As to the custom of offering salmon, to the monks of Westminster Abbey, it was observed by watermen of the Thames to a date as recent as the fourteenth century. From various traditions, such as these, the foundation of the first Abbey in Thorney Isle, or the Island of Thorns, has been generally fixed in the sixth century, and in the reign of Sebert.

Book Westminster Abbey Classic Reprint

Download or read book Westminster Abbey Classic Reprint written by Francis Bond and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-27 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Westminster Abbey Then we turn to the architectural and artistic side of the monument. With the details of the design we are not here concerned; they are treated at length in connection with English mediaeval architecture in general in a larger work of the writer. What is attempted here is something different; it is to get at the fundamentals of the design. The Abbey is a large church, hugely long and enormously tall; why is it so long, so tall, and so narrow? And how was each of these precise dimensions arrived at? And what lies at the bottom of its system of proportions? These and the like are much bigger questions than the foliation of a capital or the contour of a base, and, with whatever success, an attempt has been made to deal with them. Book Impressions of Westminster Abbey Illustrated Text to Accompany Seven Etchings Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Impressions of Westminster Abbey: Illustrated d104 to Accompany Seven Etchings To the not too critical stranger all will be glorious, and to the thoughtful archaeo logist and artist all will be interesting, even should it be felt impossible to admit that the memories of so many famous men have here always been perpetuated in the best manner or in the best taste. We shall have something more to say about the monu ments presently, but let us first contemplate the abbey as a building, not in the complete sense of an architectural analysis, but rather as a first impression upon the artistic mind. Let us enter by the North Porch, the only one now used in this year of grace 1885, when the dynamite scare has caused to be closed to the public the West Entrance, as well as that by the Poets' Corner. The great transept in all its length will be before us, and impressive enough it is in its pro portions; the white marble statues, busts, and monumental slabs, however, considetably marring the general effect. The non - artistic public will turn to the right and left to admire the statues and monu ments, all rather more than less modern, in the whole transept, the north end de voted to monuments of statesmen, and the south to those of poets and men of letters generally, and hence called the Poets' Corner. In speaking of Westminster from an artist's point of view, I should like to imagine all these modern monu ments and statues away, consigned to some other great national mausoleum or Campo Santo, and instead of them, here and there some tombs with recumbent figures and beautiful Gothic canopies all in the grey or brownish-grey tones of centuries. The present arrangement disturbs the repose distressingly. Let us mention here that we perambulate the abbey in search of the harmonious and the picturesque, and that we will Speak mainly from that principle; and I would now question whether the view obtained of the chance], as seen from the point where the south aisle Opens into the transept, does not present something far finer than the views obtained of the transept alone. In the distance you have the beautiful Gothic tombs of Aymer de Valence, etc. Above, the great arches, the fine triforium, and the clerestory; and in the background you get a glimpse of the northern chapels. Here all is old except the reredos and the objects in the foreground, but these, being dark, and in the shade, do not disturb the harmony. This view is probably finest lit up by the rays of the sun at noon of a summer's day. Pass ing by the nave, where I have found but little that lends itself to my purpose, let us enter the aisles of the chancel, where, on the north side, I find my first subject. I chose this because here comes promi nently into view, on the right side of the picture, the tomb of King Henry III. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Walter De Wenlok: Abbot of Westminster In the Flores Historiarum there stand side by side two records which may serve as a fitting introduction to our story, the more so as they refer to the year in which it opens. The first relates how on St. George's Day, in the year 1283, there passed away one John de Bradfield, Bishop of Rochester, to be succeeded by Thomas de Ynglestop or Inglethorpe, Dean of St. Paul's: and it proceeds to explain what an uncomfortable state of things then prevailed at Rochester between the Bishop and the monks. The Bishop appointed monks as officials in his household and conferred sergeancies to the disadvantage of the church; he also asserted his right to receive the dole or gift of St. Andrew.* This was resented by the Prior on behalf of the monks and was resisted to the extent of an appeal to the Archbishop of Canterbury, John Peckham, nothing l0th, as a Franciscan, to find himself called upon for a ruling in this squabble of regulars. His Grace's reply was immediate and ominous. "Descendam et videbo," so he told the Prior, not at all unmindful that this was the phrase in which the Vulgate represents the Almighty's announcement to Abraham of an intention to examine the sinfulness of Sodom and Gomorrah.
