Hall Jr. and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biographical History of the Manufacturers and Business Men of Rhode Island, at the Opening of the Twentieth Century In Several lines of manufactures the State of Rhode Island leads the world, and in many it ranks second to none in the quality and volume of its productions. A large percentage of these goods find a ready market in foreign countries, and the century just opening promises a much wider foreign field for our business men to operate in. More than one-fourth of the population of the State are employed in manufacturing establish ments, and a large per cent. Of these are classed among the most skilled artisans to be found in any country, many of them having been picked from among the best mechanics of Europe and induced to come to Rhode Island to labor in the various shops where the highest degree of skill is required in bringing out the kind of art productions that are made by the Gorham Manufacturing Company and others. It is not the object of this book to give a detailed account of the manufacturing and business conditions of the State, gleaned from sources of a more or less unreliable nature, that in many instances may have been the fountain heads of many glaring errors that have been perpetuated by many an honest writer because he accepted them as facts on account of their repeated use, but its object is this: To allow each individual manufacturer and business man to give an account of himself and his business in his own language, and as much as he deems advisable for the enlight enment of its readers in his particular line, thereby providing an original source of information that should prove more accurate and complete than any individual editor could possibly glean from material ordinarily at hand. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Roger Williams, the Founder of the State of Rhode Island IN preparing the following sketch of Roger Williams, the writer has consulted nearly all the works of New England history, from which ma terials might be derived for the illustration of his life and character. He 18, however, by far the most indebted to the elaborate Memoir, prepared by the late Mr. Knowles, a work of great fulness and accuracy of information re specting not only the immediate subject to which it relates, but also the general affairs of New England in that early age. This work, which probably contains all that can now be known concerning the life of the calumniated founder of Rhode Island, renders the task of a sabse quent biographer comparatively easy. The nar rative of Mr. Knowles has been generally com pared with the original authorities on which he relies, and in all cases his statements have been found to be correct. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Times of Thomas Wilson Dorr: With Outlines of the Political History of Rhode Island The following work is intended to correct some of the prominent mistakes which are found to prevail in regard to the character of that political controversy which took place in Rhode Island in 1841-2. Although some may be of opinion that it is too soon to give that history to the public, and the day may be far distant when it can be written or read without prejudice, yet the author believes that no good cause will suffer by investigation; that it can never be too soon to correct errors and mistakes; that national freedom can only be maintained by the proper diffusion of knowledge, and that in every popular government the respective rights of the people and of their government should be clearly defined and distinctly understood.
