Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biographical, Genealogical and Descriptive History of the First Congressional District of New Jersey, Vol. 1: Illustrated The birth of Dr. Waddington occurred February 10, 1841, in Salem, and in the public schools of this place he obtained'his elementary education. When he had arrived at a suitable age he commenced the study of medicine under the preceptorship of Dr. Thomas B. Dickinson, and in 1865 was gradu ated in the medical department of the University of Pennsylvania. Since that time he has been established in Salem, where he soon built up an exten sive practice and won the good will and high regard of his professional brethren. He occupies a finely fitted, modern suite of offices, where all of the necessary medical equipments and conveniences are to be found. His counsel is frequently sought by physicians and surgeons from far and near, and his judgment is considered conclusive, well founded and final. During a period of five years he was the attending physician at the Salem county almshouse. For many years he has also acted an important part in numerous medical organizations. He was the vice-president and then the president of the Salem County Medical Society, and was the censor in the organization. For years he has been a delegate to the New Jersey State Medical Society and has frequently represented that societv in the state medical organizations of Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Delaware. He has for a number of years been a permanent delegate to the State Society. For fifteen years he has been sent as a delegate to the American Medical Association, and twice has been the secretary of the section on diseases of children. In 1893 he was further honored by being appointed as a member of the auxiliary committee of the pan-american Medical Congress, and the same year he was appointed the censor of the medico-chirurgical College of Philadelphia. Many of the papers which he has presented are regarded as valuable contributions to the literature of the medical science. Under whom he had worked in the machine shop at Ware, Mr. Crosby was induced to come to Paterson, New Jersey, and apply for em ployment to Samuel Colt, who at that time was embarking in the manufacture of revolving guns and pistols under his celebrated patent. He arrived in Paterson, April 23, 1837, and 011 the 26th of that month began work for Mr. Colt in the old gun mill. In this connection he took the contract of making certain portions of the lock work for guns. But though the enterprise looked bright at the start he was doomed to disappointment and once more he was obliged to look for a. Field for his unre warded energies. His only compensation from the Colt Company was a number of guns, which he finally sold, and with the proceeds engaged in the grocery trade, and in May. 1843, Opened his store on Main street. From the first he rigidly excluded liquors from his merchandise. He enjoyed substantial success and rapidly advanced to a position of recog nized prominence in the mercantile community of Paterson. At the end of two years his ii1 creasing trade obliged him to remove to more commodious quarters, and in 1855 he opened his fine store on Main street. From that time until his retirement from active life, a period of more than thirty years, Mr. Crosby's estab lishment transacted a volume of business not equalled by that of any other mercantile con cern in Paterson or Passaic counties, and was also known as one of the foremost of its kind in the state of New Jersey. In 1867 he ad mitted his son, J. Henry Crosby, into partner ship, under the firm name of H. B. Crosby Son. He' withdrew from the active manage ment, April 2, 1888.
