He has served as trustee of the schools of the village, was elected one of the original five village trustees under the village government, acting in the capacity of treasurer, and gives a hearty support to all measures calculated for the public good. JOHN B. AYERS. This representative citizen and business man of Morristown, was born in his home city on the 30th of July, I858, and here received his educational discipline in the private and public schools. In the summer of I876 he became associated with his father, Theodore Ayers, in the real-estate and insurance business. In I88I he entered into partnership with his father in the same line of endeavor, and this was continued until I884, when our subject purchased his father's interest in the insurance business and since then has continued alone, meeting with the success that is ever due to industry, perseverance and ability, combined with a strict integrity of character and honorable business methods. Mr. Ayers is a stanch supporter of the Republican party, and in I892 he was elected city tax-collector for Morristown, but declined a second term, and in I895 he was appointed city clerk and treasurer, holding that dual office at the present time and discharging the duties thereof with a high degree of executive ability and circumspection. In I877 he was appointed secretary of Evergreen Cemetery, a position he has continued to fill with efficiency for the past twenty years. In touching upon his social relations we may state that Mr. Ayers is a member of the Masonic fraternity, the knights of Pythias, Royal Arcanum and the Independent Hose Company of Morristown. When he had arrived at a suitable age he commenced the study of medicine under the preceptorship of Dr. Thomas B. Dickinson, and in 1865 was gradu ated in the medical department of the University of Pennsylvania. Since that time he has been established in Salem, where he soon built up an exten sive practice and won the good will and high regard of his professional brethren. He occupies a finely fitted, modern suite of offices, where all of the necessary medical equipments and conveniences are to be found. His counsel is frequently sought by physicians and surgeons from far and near, and his judgment is considered conclusive, well founded and final. During a period of five years he was the attending physician at the Salem county almshouse. For many years he has also acted an important part in numerous medical organizations. He was the vice-president and then the president of the Salem County Medical Society, and was the censor in the organization. For years he has been a delegate to the New Jersey State Medical Society and has frequently represented that societv in the state medical organizations of Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Delaware. He has for a number of years been a permanent delegate to the State Society. For fifteen years he has been sent as a delegate to the American Medical Association, and twice has been the secretary of the section on diseases of children. In 1893 he was further honored by being appointed as a member of the auxiliary committee of the pan-american Medical Congress, and the same year he was appointed the censor of the medico-chirurgical College of Philadelphia. Many of the papers which he has presented are regarded as valuable contributions to the literature of the medical science.
