This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biographical and Critical Miscellanies, Vol. 2 The vast amount of similar contributions in France during the last century, which, in the shape of letters and anecdotes, as well as memoirs, have made us as intimately acquainted with the internal movements of society in Paris, under all its aspects, literary, fashionable, and political, as if they had passed in review before our own eyes. The French have been remarked for their excel lence in narrative ever since the times of the fabliaux and the old Norman romances. Some what of their success in this way may be imputed to the structure of their language, whose general currency, and whose peculiar fitness for prose composition, have been noticed from a very early period. Brunetto Latini, the master of Dante, wrote his Tesoro in French, in preference to his own tongue, as far back as the middle of the thirteenth century, on the ground that its speech was the most universal and most delectable of all the dialects of Europe. And Dante asserts in his treatise on Vulgar Eloquence that the superiority of the French consists in its adaptation, by means of its facility and agreeableness, to narratives in prose. Much of the wild, artless grace, the naivete, which characterized it in its infancy, has been gradually polished away by fastidious critics, and can scarcely be said to have survived Marot and Montaigne. But the lan guage has gained considerably in perspicuity, pre cision, and simplicity of construction, to which the jealous labors of the French Academy must be admitted to have contributed essentially. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biographical and Critical Miscellanies The subject of the present memoir affords an almost solitary example, at this period, of a. Scholar, in the enlarged ap lication of the term, who cultivated letters as a distinct and exclusive profession, resting his means of support, as well as his fame, on h1s success; and who, as a writer of fiction, is still farther entitled to credit for having quitted the beaten grounds of the Old Country, and sought his subjects in the untried wilderness of his own. The particulars of his unostentatious life have been collected with suffi cient industry by his friend, Mr. William Dunlap, to whom our native literature is under such large obligations for the extent and fidelity of his re searches. We will select a few of the most prom inent incidents from a mass of miscellaneous fragments and literary lumber with which his work is somewhat encumbered. It were to be wished that, in the place of some of them, more cupious extracts had been substituted for his journal and correspondence, which, doubtless, in this as in other cases, must afford the most interesting, as well as an thcntic materials for biography. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Critical Miscellanies, Vol. 3 An Address Delivered At The Town Hall, Birmingham (October 5, 1876), By The Writer, As President Of The Midland Institute. The proceedings which have now been brought satisfactorily to an end are of a kind which nobody who has sensibility as well as sense can take a part in without some emotion. An illustrious French philosopher who happened to be an examiner of candidates for admission to the Polytechnic School, once confessed that, when a youth came before him eager to do his best, competently taught, and of an apt intelligence, he needed all his self-control to press back the tears from his eyes. Book Miscellanies Vol 2 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Miscellanies Vol 2 of 2 Classic Reprint written by Lord Macaulay and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Miscellanies, Vol. 2 of 2 The edition was prepared with the help of Atterbury, who was Boyle's tutor, and of some other members of the college. It was an edition such as might be expected from people who would stoop to edit such a book. The notes were worthy of the text; the Latin version worthy of the Greek original. The volume would have been for gotten in a month, had not a misunderstanding about a manuscript arisen between the young editor and the greatest scholar that had appeared in Europe since the revival of letters, Richard Bentley. The manuscript was in Bentley's keeping. Boyle wished it to be collated. A mischief-making bookseller informed him that Bentley had refused to lend it, which was false, and also that Bentley had spoken contemptuously of the letters attrib utod to Phalaris, and of the critics Who were taken in by such counterfeits, which was perfectly true. Boyle, much provoked, paid, in his preface, a bitterly ironical compliment to Bentley's courtesy. Bentley revenged himself by a Short dissertation, in which he proved that the epistles were spurious, and the new edition of them worthless; but he treated Boyle personally with civility as a young gentleman of great hopes, whose love of learn ing was highly commendable, and who deserved to have had better instructors. This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Miscellanies, Literary and Historical, Vol. 2 of 2 IT is at last possible, by piecing together the letters in the possession of Captain Ernest Prety man, m.p., and Mr. Dickinson, Mayor of Bath and m.p. For Wells, to present the correspondence between Mr. Pitt and Lord Auckland with refer ence to Miss Eden; and this, by their kindness, I am now enabled to do. Mr. Dickinson, it may be mentioned, is the great-nephew of the Miss Eden in question, who afterwards became Lady Buckinghamshire. Parts of these papers have already been published by Lord Ashbourne, who had not, however, access to all the letters. And in any case there would be no need for reticence, for the episode is as historical as any affair of the kind, while it derives a peculiar interest from Pitt's persistent celibacy, as well as from the obscurity that overhangs his motives; for he gives no definite reason for his action. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Miscellanies, Critical, Imaginative, and Juridical, Vol. 2 of 2: Contributed to Blackwood's Magazine On the ensuing Saturday, however, the Examiner re printed its two articles of the 27th June and the 11th July 1840, containing the original charges, professing deliberately to te-afirm them; accusing Mr Phillips of having done his best to evade every charge specifically brought against him by the Ermniner and offering conclusive evidence of the truth of those charges, in the shape of extracts from the Times newspaper, which had reported the proceedings out of which the accusation against Mr Phillips originated. The Examiner, doubtless irritated by the vehement and scornful tone of Mr Phillips' letter, expressed its re aflirmed charges in very bitter terms; and also in the ensuing two numbers inserted extracts from several other newspapers; complaining also of the precipitancy of fellow-j ournalists in authenticating a charge of calumny against it, without having paused for its rejoinder, but presumed Mr Phillips' answer complete. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biographical and Critical Essays, Vol. 2 of 2: Reprinted From Reviews, With Additions and Corrections When we write a book, it is our reflection, our reason, that speak; we express only our ideas, sometimes only the hypocrisy of our ideas. When we write letters, we more commonly express our sentiments and our passions. Read, for example, the elegant pages in which Sallust raises altars to poverty, proclaims the ineffable sweetness and the eminent dignity of the Stoic moralists, stigmatises with burning declamation, with virtuous anger, the corruption of Rome, the extortion in the provinces. I s it after reading this that we shall recognise this Sallust, the corrupter of the domestic hearth, the bloodstained tribune, the slave of Caesar, the impudent extortioner, whose famous museum-gardens were built with the gold and the tears of N umidia? Incredible power of abstraction! Prodigious miracle of taste and art! This man, branded with infamy, talks of virtue like Cato pen in hand he becomes virtuous. Shall we believe also in the disinterestedness of Seneca, in his philosophy, his austerity, his clemency, by reading nothing but his moral treatises, from which morals seem to flow rather than words. Read his life, and you will avert your looks. Alongside of some real public and private virtues, what shameful weaknesses! What infamy and crime! He knew how to die: he did not know how to live.' When Seneca wrote his treatise in praise of poverty, he had some millions sterling out at usurious interest and it was the pointed saying of South, that when he (seneca) recommended people to throw away their money, it was with the view of picking it up himself. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Miscellanies, Vol. 2 of 2 The curious legend connected with the birth of this Adopted Son, and the facts relating to his extraordinary career in after life, are derived from the Records of the French Police of the period. In this instance, and in the instances of those other papers in the present collection which deal with foreign incidents and characters, while the facts of each narrative exist in print, the form in which the narrative is cast is of my own devising. If these facts had been readily accessible to readers in general, the papers in question would not have been reprinted. But the scarce and curious books from which my materials are derived, have been long since out of print, and are, in all human probability, never likely to be published again. Ars est celare artem. The effect would fail if they had a showy character, as if invented for effect. Homer's employment of such details simply proves that he was a master of his art, and it is one Of his highest triumphs to have produced on the distinguished statesman and scholar an effect analogous to that which Swift produced on the rude sailor, who declared that he knew Captain Gulliver very well, but that he lived at Queenhithe, not at Wapping. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Miscellanies, Critical, Imaginative, and Juridical, 1855, Vol. 1 of 2: Contributed to Blackwood's Magazine These volumes contain such of the Author's contributions to Blackwood's Magazine, as appeared to deal with subjects of general, intrinsic, and permanent interest and importance. Most of them were originally written with a view to subsequent separate publication; and some have cost the Author great pains, alike in the writing and revision. The paper, however, entitled "The Mystery of Murder, and its Defence," did not appear in Blackwoods Magazine, but in the quarterly Law Review, and is included in these "Miscellanies," for reasons stated in a note subjoined to the commencement of the paper. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Volume of Miscellanies, Vol. 1 of 2: Studies, and Fancies IN offering this volume of Pictures to the public, I fulfil the long-urged wishes of personal friends, compe tent, both as scholars and as men of the world, to judge of their fitness. But I would not yield to such Wishes alone. The Studies were written nearly eight years ago, on an impulse given by the dissatisfaction I felt concerning the character of much of the biographical work which the newly awakened interest in woman had called-out. Until women are Wholly free until all that God permits, man also leaves Open to them, - it is inevitable that they Should do a great deal of poor work. Still it is inexpressibly painful to see such work: and we feel that every woman owes to the present crisis in human inte rests her best, her slowest, her most faithfully prepared contribution and Whatever looks Slipshod, ill-cousi dered, or undigested, makes the heart sink. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lives of the Illustrious, Vol. 2: The Biographical Magazine The Second Volume of the biographical magazine is now complete. That gives the Editor the privilege of addressing his readers in his own person. The Opportunity is taken advantage of because it is pleasant to render thanks for past support, and to indulge in well-founded anticipations of future success. It is all the more pleasant to feel that the past has not been altogether unmerited, and that the future shall not be undeserved. Many are disappointed in the result of their efforts to serve the public. In their chagrin they are apt to say that appreciation does not always wait on merit - that rewards are bestowed by the hand of chance, or secured by accident. The world is sometimes - not often, unjust. For a time it may slight good service, but in the long run it is pretty sure to reward it. As each man finds the place for which he is best fitted, the world allows him the opportunity of doing his life-work. Those who find worthy work, and do it in a true spirit, seldom fail to receive attention and respect. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
