It was sent to the press not because of any intrinsic merit in the essays themselves, but because their author rightly judged that the reading public, especially in England, would like to peruse some of his earliest productions, and to compare them with his later works. The English edition, which contains all the papers except the review of Ticknor's History of Spanish Literature, was published in 1845. As one studies the Miscellanies to-day he realizes fully the force of Daniel Websters oft quoted remark when, after the publication of the "History of the Reign of Ferdinand and Isabella" he characterized Prescott as "a comet which had suddenly blazed out upon the world in full splendor." They are exceedingly interesting to the historical student who desires to compare the reviews of the first half of the last century with those of the present day. He was the greatest and most influential representative of that way of viewing human nature and its circumstances, which it was one of the characteristic glories of the eighteenth century to have rebelled against and rejected. More than a hundred years after the publication of the Pensées, Condorcet thought it worth while to prepare a new edition of them, with annotations, protesting, not without a certain unwonted deference of tone, against Pascal's doctrine of the base and desperate estate of man. Voltaire also had them reprinted with notes of his own, written in the same spirit of vivacious deprecation, which we may be sure would have been even more vivacious, if Voltaire had not remembered that he was speaking of the mightiest of all the enemies of the Jesuits. Apart from formal and specific dissents like these, all the writers who had drunk most deeply of the spirit of the eighteenth century, lived in a constant ferment of revolt against the clear-witted and vigorous thinker of the century before, who had clothed mere theological mysteries with the force and importance of strongly entrenched propositions in a consistent philosophy. This work had been actually projected by Steele before the conclusion of the Spectator. In a letter to Pope, dated Nov. 12, 1712, he announces his intention in these words, "I desire you would let me know whether you are at leisure or not? I have a design which I shall open a month or two hence, with the assistance of the few like yourself. If your thoughts are unengaged, I shall explain myself farther." To this, which indicates that Pope had previously assisted Steele, though of that assistance we have no direct proof, he answers that he shall be very ready and glad to contribute to any design that tends to the advantage of mankind, which, he adds, "I am sure, all yours do."
