Book Biographia Navalis Volume 3

Download or read book Biographia Navalis Volume 3 written by John Carnock and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2012-04-05 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The only word to describe this work is monumental. It is a record of the services of more than 2200 naval officers across a span of nearly 140 years, drawn from the most authentic sources (according to the title page) and disposed in a chronological arrangement. Sometimes only one or two lines constitute the entry, in other cases there are several pages (Earl St Vincent takes ten pages). They are set out on a year by year basis, and within each year the names are arranged alphabetically. Charnock intended this to be a four-volume work but that wasn't enough, two more were needed (V and VI) and these were subtitled The First and Second Volumes of the Continuation. Each of the six volumes has its own index.

On the asth of September following he was romoted to the Pearl, a frigate of thirty guns; from t e latter of which dates only, he took rank as a captain in the navy. We have no other intelligence relative to him till the month of March 1703-4; at which time he commanded the Charlotte yacht, which vefl'el was then employed on the Dublin (tation, and it appears for the exprefs purpofe of attending the lord lieutenant. We fuppofe captain Breholt to have continued in the fame command as long as he remained in fervice, as we do not find any farther mention made of him, except that he is faid, in rear admiral Hardy's lift of the navy, to have died on the a4th of June in Greenwich-hofpitai. Admitting this intelligence to be true, we have to obferve by the way that he was not there with the rank of captain. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new book, a tie-in to a major BBC TV series presented by Dan Snow, is written by one of the nation's foremost naval historians, and tells the story of how the Royal Navy shaped the politics, culture and economy of Britain, leaving its imprint on everything from our landscape, to our democracy and even our very identity. At its peak, it became the driving force behind the spread of a system of values which would change the world forever. And then it lost it all. In "Empire of the Seas", Brian Lavery re-injects the romance into Britain's seafaring past. He discusses the hidden human stories behind the celebrated sea-battles and also provides a warts-and-all expose of the darker chapters in the Navy's past, including its role in slavery and the spread of disease. The book is illustrated with a superlative collection of artworks and photographs from the National Maritime Museum, the Royal Naval Museum and private collections.
