Book excerpt: 'Discovering the Human' investigates the emergence of the modern human sciences and their impact on literature, art and other media in the 18th and 19th centuries. Up until the 1830s, science and culture were part of a joint endeavour to discover and explore the secret of life. The question 'What is life?' unites science and the arts during the Ages of Enlightenment and Romanticism, and at the end of the Romantic period, a shift of focus from the human as an organic whole to the specialized disciplines signals the dawning of modernity. The emphasis of the edited collection is threefold: the first part sheds light on the human in art and science in the Age of Enlightenment, the second part is concerned with the transitions taking place at the turn of the 19th century. The chapters forming the third part investigate the impact of different media on the concept of the human in science, literature and film.

Book Richard Cumberland and Natural Law

Download or read book Richard Cumberland and Natural Law written by Linda Kirk and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2022-05-26 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No study in the history of seventeenth century thought is completed without some mention of Richard Cumberland, one of the many writers who aimed to refute Hobbes. Cumberland remains on of the few important writers of his century on whom, until now, nothing of substance has been written In the past Cumberland has been somewhat unfairly overshadowed by his fellow anti-Hobbists. His one important work, De Legibus Naturae, first appeared in Latin in 1672 and has never been satisfactorily translated into English. That he published so little in such a prolific age was unusual, but his influence through his work continued to be felt well into the nineteenth century. It is now clear that he went further than both Grotius and Pufendorf in devising a system which prefigured classical utilitarianism, propounding a cosmology based upon the reconciliation of charity and self-interest. In this study, Cumberland is placed for the first time, in his intellectual and historical setting. The author describes Cumberland's life, his work as Bishop of Peterborough, his book and above all his position in the development of natural law theory.

Book Henry Hudson the Navigator

Download or read book Henry Hudson the Navigator written by G. M. Asher and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four centuries ago, English explorer Henry Hudson (1570-1611), commanding the yacht *Halve Maen* for the Dutch East India Company, sailed into a New World tidal estuary near the landmass the local Lenape Indians called the "island of many hills." The island was Manhattan, and though Hudson was unlikely the first European to see the river, it has been forever after that known by his name. This classic 1860 work collects the eyewitness documentation of Hudson's voyages of exploration, edited, partially translated, and annotated by GEORG MICHAEL ASHER (d. 1905). This invaluable volume of historical accounts includes abstracts of Hudson's own journals, reports by other sailors under Hudson's command, extracts from commentary by Hudson's contemporaries, and much more. The best record we have of Henry Hudson's achievements, this replica volume will be prized by fans of firsthand history.
