Finally, in 1508, Diego Colon, his son, initiated a lawsuit against the Crown and entered into a long legal battle that lasted twenty-eight years and ended in a series of compromises. By that time Diego was dead and his widow, Maria de Toledo, had carried on the suit in behalf of her son, Luis Colon, the direct male descendant of Cristobal Colon. In the initial stages of the legal fight to defend the Colon estate, the Capitulaciones formed the basis of the litigation between the Colon family and the Spanish government. The concessions made in 1536 by the Crown resulted in monetary remittances to the Colon estate until 1898, when Spain lost its remaining colonies in the Western Hemisphere in the splendid little war against the United States. But rather than bridging earth and heaven, Spain’s many conquests bore a bitter fruit. In their search for gold, Spaniards enslaved “Indians” from the Bahamas and the South American mainland. The eloquent protests of Bartolomé de las Casas, here much discussed, began almost immediately. Columbus and other Spanish explorers—Cortés, Ponce de León, and Magellan among them—created an empire for Spain of unsurpassed size and scope. But the door was soon open for other powers, enemies of Spain, to stake their claims. Great men and women dominate these pages: cardinals and bishops, priors and sailors, landowners and warriors, princes and priests, noblemen and their determined wives. Rivers of Gold is a great story brilliantly told. More significant, it is an engrossing history with many profound—often disturbing—echoes in the present.

La Santa Maria was a "nao" and there was also another type of ship, called "fusta", that followed the expedition privately because it was not part of the royal fleet. This ship has been mentioned in a general sense in the documents written between Columbus and the Spanish Kings, but in more detail and by Columbus himself in the documents reported in this book.
