Book Order Iniomi Myctophiformes

Download or read book Order Iniomi Myctophiformes written by Basil G. Nafpaktitus and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2018-10-23 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part Seven in the Fishes of the Western North Atlantic series describes the neosopelids (2 genera, 4 species) and lanternfishes (20 genera, 82 species), with an account of Atlantic mesopelagic zoogeography that serves as a model for predicting occurrences of many ocean animals. There are accounts of 86 species in 2 families and 22 genera of bony fishes, among the most abundant of deep oceanic waters, and prime species for the study of oceanic zoogeography and for monitoring and assessment of the oceans. Specialist authorships of its sections include detailed species descriptions with keys, life history and general habits, abundance, range, and relation to human activity, such as economic and sporting importance. The text is written for an audience of amateur and professional ichthyologists, sportsmen, and fishermen, based on new revisions, original research, and critical reviews of existing information. Species are illustrated by exceptional black and white line drawings, accompanied by distribution maps and tables of meristic data.

Book A Review of the World Resources of Mesopelagic Fish

Download or read book A Review of the World Resources of Mesopelagic Fish written by J. Gjøsaeter and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 1980 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fish species can be called mesopelagic if it spends the day in the mesopelagic zone. The mesopelagic zone has been defined in different ways based on depth, temperature and light regimes. For the present purpose, depth seems to be the best criterion and mesopelagic fish can thus be defined as species generally spending the day at depths between approximately 200 and 1 000 m. Generally they perform a diel migration, coming to the upper 200 m or even to the surface during the night. The present report briefly reviews the systematics ecology and life history of important groups of mesopelagic fish. Further, some methods used for abundance estimation of these fish are described and discussed. The bulk of the report reviews the present knowledge of abundance and species composition of mesopelagic fish in each of the FAO statistical areas. Although the data in most cases are few, an attempt has been made to give tentative estimates of the biomass and production in the various areas. When available, information on the life history of the most important species in each area is also given.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Antarctic fish fauna has evolved over a long period of geographic and climatic isolation. In the course of this evolution, Antarctic fish have developed specialized adaptations, some of which characterize these organisms as unique. In strong contrast to the continental shelf faunas elsewhere, the Antarctic shelf ichthyofauna is dominated by a single highly endemic group, the Notothenioidei. This group of perciform fish probably first appeared and diversified in the early Tertiary. The development of the Polar Front (referred to as the Antarctic Convergence in the older literature) resulted in a natural oceanographic barrier to migration in either direction, and thus became a key factor in the evolution of Antarctic fish. The dominance of the Antarctic continental shelf fauna by a single taxonomic group of fish provides a simplified natural laboratory for exploring the wealth of physiological, biochemical and ecological adaptations that characterize the fauna. Understanding of the patterns of adaptation in this highly specialized group of fish can tell us much about of evolution.

Book Antarctic Fish Biology

Download or read book Antarctic Fish Biology written by Joseph T. Eastman and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important volume provides an original synthesis and novel overview of Antarctic fish biology, detailing the evolution of these fish in some of the most unusual and extreme environments in the world. Focusing on one group of fish, the notothenoioids, which contain the majority of the current organismal diversity, this book describes a fauna that has evolved in isolation and experienced incredible adaptive radiation by acquiring numerous physiological specializations. Darwin's finches and African cichlids may be joined by Antarctic fishes as exemplars of adaptive radiation. The books' coverage is detailed and comprehensive, and the author clearly recognizes the fact that these fish are a component of a most interesting and biologically unique ecosystem and environment. Topics in Antarctic Fish Biology include past and present environments, fossil records, taxonomic composition of fauna, systematic relationships, diversification, and physiological adaptations.
