Hence, moral bio-enhancement (MBE), if effective and safe, is our moral duty. However, it has to be voluntary because if it is made compulsory, human freedom (of the will) would be curtailed. As freedom (of the will) is an essential component of humanness, compulsory MBE would infringe upon our humanness. An essential question is; what will motivate humans to subject themselves voluntarily to MBE?The book argues - and supports by using empirical/experimental evidence - that morality and happiness operate in a circularly supportive relationship that applies to most humans most of the time: the better they are, the happier they will be; the happier they are, the better they will be. Hence, the grounding rationale for MBE ought not to be the prevention of “ultimate harm” based on compulsory MBE (as argued by Persson and Savulescu), but human happiness based on voluntary MBE. The primary objective of the book is to provide the readers with an original view on moral enhancement, whilst proposing a novel conception of moral enhancement that is informed by new biotechnological developments.

This is what is meant by 'moral enhancement'. There are many proposed methodologies or technologies for moral enhancement. Some of them are ancient and/or familiar: we may attempt moral enhancement by setting a good example, by good parenting, by education or training, by peer pressure, by telling stories with a moral, in words or in pictures, and so on. We can imbibe substances with mood changing or motivational effects. We can also use medical, biological, or other scientific means; we can search for and deploy chemicals, or biological or molecular agents, which we believe will change people for the better; and we can modify the environment to make bad outcomes of all sorts less likely. We can experiment with political and social systems, institutions, and arrangements designed to make the world a better place or people better people. The question whether and to what extent moral enhancement is possible is the subject of this book.

Uniting philosophical with scientific arguments, Levin mounts a significant challenge to transhumanists' claim that science and technology support their vision of posthumanity. In a clear and engaging style, she dismantles transhumanists' breezy assurances that posthumans will emerge if we but allocate sufficient resources to that end. Far from offering theoretical and practical "proof of concept" for the vision that they urge upon us, Levin argues, transhumanists engage inadequately with cognitive psychology, biology, and neuroscience, often relying on questionable or outdated views within those fields. Having shown in depth why transhumanism should be rejected, Levin argues forcefully for a holistic perspective on living well that is rooted in Aristotle's virtue ethics but that is adapted to liberal democracy. Book excerpt: In recent literature, there has been much debate about the conceptual and practical considerations for moral bioenhancement. Many authors offer competing views on what moral bioenhancement might be. Furthermore, authors argue that if moral bioenhancement were safe and effective, then how a project to biomedically enhance the moral character of humanity could look. In this thesis, I explore many of the dominant understandings and definitions of moral bioenhancement. Specifically, I examine the distinction between treatment and enhancement, a welfarist definition of enhancement and three conceptions of moral bioenhancement offered by Douglas (2008), DeGrazia (2014), and Ahlskog (2017). I then present the definition of moral bioenhancement I believe to be most defensible and plausible. I go on to defend this definition from criticisms which argue that any conception of moral bioenhancement requires a consensus on what comprises a morally desirable action. The next two sections of this thesis explore the potential goals and implementation methods of a moral bioenhancement project. I first examine the universal and compulsory version of a moral bioenhancement project favoured by Persson and Savulescu (2008) which aims to mitigate the threat of catastrophic harms to humanity. I argue that such a project would be implausible to implement and would unacceptably limit individual freedom. However, I defend a position offered by Persson and Savulescu's that argues there are no important differences between moral bioenhancement and traditional moral enhancement in respect to free will. Lastly, I present a more plausible and defensible version of a moral bioenhancement project which relies on voluntary and partial moral bioenhancement. I outline the goal of this moral bioenhancement project as reducing all societal harms rather than merely avoiding existential threats to humanity and argue that this goal is more defensible than Persson and Savulescu's project. I then defend a voluntary and partial moral bioenhancement project from the criticism that argues any such project which relies on individuals voluntarily undergoing moral bioenhancement would fail as it would require people to be sufficiently morally motivated to begin with. I argue that there is, at least, a plausibility that voluntary moral bioenhancement could be prudentially good and that self-interested individuals could be sufficiently motivated to undergo such a project. I conclude by saying that much more research into moral bioenhancement is necessary to make such a project even a distant future possibility. Furthermore, any plausible moral bioenhancement project must be accompanied by an education program.

Can “moral bioenhancement”—using technological or pharmaceutical means to boost the morally desirable and remove the morally problematic—bring about a morally improved humanity? In The Myth of the Moral Brain, Harris Wiseman argues that moral functioning is immeasurably complex, mediated by biology but not determined by it. Morality cannot be engineered; there is no such thing as a “moral brain.” Wiseman takes a distinctively interdisciplinary approach, drawing on insights from philosophy, biology, theology, and clinical psychology. He considers philosophical rationales for moral enhancement, and the practical realities they come up against; recent empirical work, including studies of the cognitive and behavioral effects of oxytocin, serotonin, and dopamine; and traditional moral education, in particular the influence of religious thought, belief, and practice. Arguing that morality involves many interacting elements, Wiseman proposes an integrated bio-psycho-social approach to the consideration of moral enhancement. Such an approach would show that, by virtue of their sheer numbers, social and environmental factors are more important in shaping moral functioning than the neurobiological factors with which they are interwoven.
