Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Chronic pelvic pain (CPP) is common health problem among women that responds poorly to biomedical intervention. Studies examining the implications of race/ethnicity on health care for women with CPP are scarce. This study utilizes a biocultural approach to examine social and clinical characteristics among a sample of ethnically diverse women seeking biomedical care for CPP. Interview data describe the impact of CPP on social roles and responsibilities, women's explanations of the cause(s) of pelvic pain and their perceptions of biomedical treatment. Sixtythree women, 15 African Americans, one Hispanic, and 47 European Americans participated in the study. Despite the limitations of the small sample size, there was a statistically significant ethnic difference in level of pain intensity with sexual intercourse, (M=8.43, SE=0.69) among African American women compared to (M=6.18, SE=0.49) European American women. There were notable although not statistically significant ethnic differences in treatment response, ranking of CPP as a life problem and abuse history. Themes identified by analysis of interview data related to causality, sexuality, productivity, and fragmented health care corroborate findings in other studies and illustrate the relevance of conceptualizing CPP within a biocultural framework.

Because of our lack of understanding it has been a problem that is too often ignored and here at last are some practical ideas for therapeutic management. There is still much progress to be made in the field of incontinence and pelvic pain and as yet, no editors can be expected to produce a definitive work. However, I would like to recommend this book most strongly. It has a new approach to this topic, which is still a major problem for many people.

Book excerpt: As new faculty members in the Section of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at Brown University, we began collaborating on research into assessment and treatment of sexual problems in the fall of 1975. Although each of us arrived with clinical and research in terests in the broad field of sexual problems, the idea for this book grew out of our early discussions and a consensus on the future direction of research. We noted that there had been an extremely rapid increase in knowledge of human sexual behavior as well as sexual disorders and their treatment over the last few decades. It has also become increasingly apparent that sexual problems, broadly conceived, comprise a sizable fraction of the problems for which people seek treatment, and that, although the treatment of sexual problems was achieving some success, treatment was for the most part slow, costly, and without any guarantee of successful outcome. Furthermore, there were many people with sexual prob lems for whom treatment was not available. With these ideas in mind, it seemed timely for investigators in the field of human sex uality and its disorders to turn their attention to the problem of prevention. Organizing a symposium on the topic enabled us to invite leading investigators in the study of sexual behavior to address this area. Bioarchaeology offers a unique perspective on these day-to-day experiences—skeletal tissue is constantly undergoing a process of change and, as a living biological system, it can adapt to external forces. Furthermore, bioarchaeological studies are multi-scalar and can examine individuals, groups, or entire populations. Using osteological indicators of activity patterns (entheseal changes, osteoarthritis) and dietary isotopes (carbon, nitrogen) as examples, this book addresses patterns of everyday life in the ancient past. Physical activities and food consumption are actions that are carried out on a daily basis. While bioarchaeology does not have the ability to recreate specific day-to-day activities, we can assess broad trends in everyday life. The volume illustrates these points using examples from the Ancient Nile Valley. Through the examination of over 800 Egyptian and Nubian individuals from five different archaeological sites, the research addresses patterns of everyday life as they relate to social inequality, agency, and practice. Beyond osteological indicators of activity and dietary patterns, this book also discusses additional methods that can be pursed to draw attention to daily life. Lastly, this book also highlights the applicability of and potential contribution that practice theory can make to this area of research.
