Book excerpt: The Pacific Symposium on Biocomputing (PSB) 2007 is an international, multidisciplinary conference for the presentation and discussion of current research in the theory and application of computational methods in problems of biological significance. Presentations are rigorously peer reviewed and are published in an archival proceedings volume. PSB 2007 will be held January 3-7, 2007 at the Grand Wailea, Maui. Tutorials will be offered prior to the start of the conference.PSB 2007 will bring together top researchers from the US, the Asian Pacific nations, and around the world to exchange research results and address open issues in all aspects of computational biology. It is a forum for the presentation of work in databases, algorithms, interfaces, visualization, modeling, and other computational methods, as applied to biological problems, with emphasis on applications in data-rich areas of molecular biology. The PSB has been designed to be responsive to the need for critical mass in sub-disciplines within biocomputing. For that reason, it is the only meeting whose sessions are defined dynamically each year in response to specific proposals. PSB sessions are organized by leaders of research in biocomputing's “hot topics.” In this way, the meeting provides an early forum for serious examination of emerging methods and approaches in this rapidly changing field.

Book Biocomputing

    Book Details:
  • Author : Phillip A. Laplante
  • Publisher : Nova Publishers
  • Release : 2003
  • ISBN : 9781590338896
  • Pages : 130 pages

Download or read book Biocomputing written by Phillip A. Laplante and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2003 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the mid-1990s advances in DNA sequencing have enhanced our understanding of humanity and all living things. Driven by these advances, the closely related sciences of Bioinformatics and Biocomputing have become the ultimate interdisciplinary study areas, forever blurring the lines between engineering, biology and computer science and bringing together researchers who ordinarily wouldn't interact. While Bioinformatics largely focuses on the analysis, prediction, imaging and sequencing of genes, the broader, interdisciplinary field of Biocomputing includes the study of biological models of computing using traditional materials, genomic modelling and visualisation, biomaterials for non-traditional computer designs and computer architectures for those materials. In addition, Biocomputing uses the principles and tools of computer science to model or algorithmically specify complex biological information systems and computational systems with life-like capabilities. Biocomputing has manifested numerous government multi-agency programs, including the Human Genome Project, the High Performance Computing & Communications (HPCC) initiative, the Human Brain Project, and other related programs such as the National Information Infrastructure and Digital Libraries initiatives, which have strong bio-related components. This book brings together the latest research in this fast-growing field.

Book Genesis Machines

Download or read book Genesis Machines written by Martyn Amos and published by Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2007-06-14 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paperback version of the groundbreaking book about the next generation of computers: not only are they smaller—they're alive. Cells, gels, and DNA strands are the "wetware" of the twenty-first century. Imagine taking cells from a cancer patient and programming them to detect disease and then prompt the body to cure itself. Or clothes woven with microchips, nanofibers, and living cells to form wearable bio-weapons detection systems. Both of these revolutionary applications are closer than we think. Some scientists are pushing the boundaries even further by creating synthetic biology where brand new creatures are engineered in the laboratory. In this breathtaking book, a leading expert in the field reveals just how the stuff of science fiction is rapidly becoming a reality. This new technology will change the way we think—not just about computers, but about the nature of life itself.
