Book Parasitism and Ecosystems

    Book Details:
  • Author : Frédéric Thomas
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2005-01-06
  • ISBN : 0198529872
  • Pages : 232 pages

Download or read book Parasitism and Ecosystems written by Frédéric Thomas and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2005-01-06 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For several years there has been a growing interest in understanding the dynamics of parasites in ecosystems, as well as the diversity of ways in which they influence ecosystem functioning through their effects on host populations and communities. Ecologists, epidemiologists, evolutionary biologists, and other scientists are increasingly coming to realise that parasites must be taken into account when studying ecosystems. Parasitism and Ecosystems summarizes currentknowledge on this topic, providing a comprehensive overview for researchers and students. It represents the first synthesis of both the roles and the consequences of pathogens in ecosystems, utilising well-documented case-studies to illustrate the main issues as well as identifying prospects for future research.

Book Parasite host Associations

Download or read book Parasite host Associations written by Catherine Ann Toft and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1991 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parasitic relationships are among the most common yet complex associations found in nature. This book makes an important contribution toward integrating parasitology into the mainstream of ecological and evolutionary studies. It delves into a number of key questions: To what extent are parasite-host interactions an escalating evolutionary conflict and, conversely, to what extent has evolution modified this process to facilitate co-existence? The first section of the book deals with whole organisms and populations, since the effects of parasitism are dependent on the densities and distributions of hosts and parasites. The next section considers special cases, such as herbivores and plants. The third part is devoted to physiological and immunological aspects, and the book concludes with an overview from the perspectives of ecology, evolution, and physiology. The work will interest ecologists, evolutionary biologists, parasitologists, entomologists, and epidemiologists.

Book Parasitism

    Book Details:
  • Author : Claude Combes
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2001
  • ISBN : 0226114465
  • Pages : 743 pages

Download or read book Parasitism written by Claude Combes and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 743 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Parasitism, Claude Combes explores the fascinating adaptations parasites have developed through their intimate interactions with their hosts. He begins with the biology of parasites—their life cycles, habitats, and different types of associations with their hosts. Next he discusses genetic interactions between hosts and parasites, and he ends with a section on the community ecology of parasites and their role in the evolution of their hosts. Throughout the book Combes enlivens his discussion with a wealth of concrete examples of host-parasite interactions.

Book Molecular Recognition in Host Parasite Interactions

Download or read book Molecular Recognition in Host Parasite Interactions written by Timo K. Korhonen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A very early step in microbial colonization and pathogenesis is that involving recog nition of the host by the microbe. In the final analysis such recognition is due to interaction between specific molecules on the two sides, without which host and microbe would ignore each other. It is therefore exciting to learn the rules that govern host-microbe interaction at to a large extent determines whether or not we are infected by the molecular level, which influenza virus, leishmanias, staphylococci and other pathogens. This book is a compendium of the addresses delivered at a symposium on molecular interaction at Porvoo, Finland in August 1991. Realizing that there are no a priori differ ences in receptor recognition in viruses, eukaryotic parasites and bacteria, we freely inter mingled these microbes at the symposium, and in this book. We found the interdisciplinary discussions and comparisons both educative and stimulating. Thus the book is divided into parts that focus on host cell receptors, on microbial recognition molecules and molecules that mediate microbial interaction with a host cell receptor and, briefly, on the molecular events that follow. Although many microbes and many cellular receptors are missing from the book -owing to the limited duration and size of the symposium -the articles presented here constitute an impressive body of examples of how initial host-microbe interaction can come about. We believe that as such the book is a useful and interesting overview of the mechanisms and principles involved in these interactions.

Book excerpt: Parasitology Highly detailed textbook on parasites and parasite relationships The fully revised edition of Parasitology: An Integrated Approach holds true to its engaging and easy-to-read approach. It comprehensively covers the complex and dynamic interaction between the parasite and its host ranging from invertebrates to vertebrates. Following an integrated approach, the authors explain how the study of parasites requires an understanding of biological concepts such as growth and reproduction, molecular biology, biochemistry, immunology, and pathology. In this second edition, they further address parasites and parasite relationships in the grand scheme of global changes and their impact. This textbook also reviews the often-neglected positive aspects of parasite infections and how humans have used parasites for their own advantage. Parasitology: An Integrated Approach, 2nd edition includes supplementary learning resources such as self-assessment quizzes, practical exercises, and an extensive collection of photographs. Now includes parasite life cycles in colour Strong focus on parasite interactions with other pathogens such as bacteria and viruses Discusses major advancements in the field of parasite diagnostics Additional image material and learning resources (quizzes, practical exercises) provided online A valuable and comprehensive learning resource for undergraduate students in the biological, biomedical and veterinary sciences and in medicine. It is also of interest to postgraduates and professionals with an interest including but not limited to parasitology, animal welfare, ecology, and medical microbiology.
