Book Biochemical Genetic Stock Identification of Chum Salmon in Southern British Columbia 1993

Download or read book Biochemical Genetic Stock Identification of Chum Salmon in Southern British Columbia 1993 written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genetic stock identification (GIS) has occurred in Canadian chum fisheries since 1981. GIS results provide fisheries staff with stock identification information needed to effectively manage commercial fisheries. In addition, this information provides estimates of harvest by country, which are used in implementing the terms of the Pacific Salmon Treaty. This report presents the methods and results of GIS.

This book was released on 1989 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genetic variability among chum salmon stocks has been used to identify the origins of chum salmon since 1981, with a genetic stock identification (GSI) program now occurring on every major chum fishery in Southern British Columbia. This report includes GSI procedures and results for the 1988 fishing season and re- analyzes the 1985-87 data due to Canada and the United States establishing a common baseline for these three years. The 1988 Johnstone Strait fishery intercepted mainly Fraser River and Johnstone and Georgia Strait returning chum stocks. The mid- Vancouver Island, Nanaimo, and Nitinat terminal fisheries were dominated by stock returning to their respective areas. A total of 6,056 chum salmon were analyzed for genetic variability over two months.

Book Biochemical Genetic Stock Compositions of Chum Salmon Fisheries in Southern British Columbia 1981 1983

Download or read book Biochemical Genetic Stock Compositions of Chum Salmon Fisheries in Southern British Columbia 1981 1983 written by Terry Dale Beacham and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1981, a program of stock identification was undertaken inorder to provide in-season estimates of stock compositions sothat more discrete harvesting of stocks could be attempted. Themajor stocks that contribute to the commercial fisheries weresampled on the spawning grounds, and electrophotectic, meristic, and morphometric characters were surveyed from each stock. Inthe present report, the authors used the electrophoreticcharacteristics of the individual stocks that were sampled on thespawning ground to estimate stock compositions in mixedfisheries.

Book Pacific Salmon Life Histories

Download or read book Pacific Salmon Life Histories written by Cornelis Groot and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pacific salmon are an important biological and economic resource of countries of the North Pacific rim. They are also a unique group of fish possessing unusually complex life histories. There are seven species of Pacific salmon, five occurring on both the North American and Asian continents (sockeye, pink, chum, chinook, and coho) and two (masu and amago) only in Asia. The life cycle of the Pacific salmon begins in the autumn when the adult female deposits eggs that are fertilized in gravel beds in rivers or lakes. The young emerge from the gravel the following spring and will either migrate immediately to salt water or spend one or more years in a river or lake before migrating. Migrations in the ocean are extensive during the feeding and growing phase, covering thousands of kilometres. After one or more years the maturing adults find their way back to their home river, returning to their ancestral breeding grounds to spawn. They die after spawning and the eggs in the gravel signify a new cycle. Upon this theme Pacific salmon have developed many variations, both between as well as within species. Pacific Salmon Life Histories provides detailed descriptions of the different life phases through which each of the seven species passes. Each chapter is written by a scientist who has spent years studying and observing a particular species of salmon. Some of the topics covered are geographic distribution, transplants, freshwater life, ocean life, development, growth, feeding, diet, migration, and spawning behaviour. The text is richly supplemented by numerous maps, illustrations, colour plates, and tables and there is a detailed general index, as well as a useful geographical index.
