Book excerpt: The Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) Oceanography Division has implemented a 1/25 deg horizontal-resolution numerical ocean model for the Gulf of Mexico (GOM). The model domain encompasses the entire GOM extending from 18 deg to 31 deg North and from 77 deg to 98 deg West. The physical formulation is based on the Naval Coastal Ocean Model (NCOM) configured with a 40 level -z vertical structure: 19 terrain-following (sigma) levels at the top of the water column, and 21 z (depth) levels at the bottom. The terrain-following levels, reaching from the surface to about 137 meters, allow higher vertical resolutions for resolving mixed layer/shallow waters, while the z-levels are used in the stratified ocean. The ocean bathymetry is constructed from the NRL 2-minute database with the coastline set at a depth of 2 meters. The physical model is one-way coupled to a 13-component ecosystem (biogeochemical) model [Chai et. al., 2002, 2003, 2007] that includes nutrients, two classes of plankton, as well as O and C02. The current configuration is tailored, but not limited to, real-time (RT) prediction; providing nowcasts (current state of the ocean) and up to 120-hour forecasts for the region. In this configuration, the model receives (initial) boundary information from the operational 1/8 deg Global NCOM, and it is forced by 3-hourly 1/2 deg momentum and heat fluxes from the Naval Operational Global Prediction System (NOGAPS). The NCOMGOM model assimilates daily surface/subsurface temperature and salinity generated by the Modular Ocean Data Assimilation System (MODAS), which regresses satellite derived Sea Surface Temperature (SST) and Sea Surface Height (SSH) data to obtain T & S synthetic profiles.

Book excerpt: Ocean circulation is shown to influence the bio-optical properties in open and coastal waters in the Gulf of Mexico. 3-dimensional physical ocean properties of temperature, salinity, and currents determined from the Navy Coastal Ocean Model (NCOM) are being combined with daily "latest pixel composite" satellite properties (phytoplankton, CDOM and detritus absorption and backscattering and SST) The coupling of these data sources provides supportive evidence of the degree which physical processes influence bio-optical processes in the surface ocean. NCOM assimilates daily SST along with synthetic temperature and salinity profiles from MODIS and is forced by surface COAMPS winds. Ocean color and SST from Sea WIFS and MODIS (Terra aqua) provide daily real-time observations. We demonstrate the response of the Mississippi River plume (observed through bio-optical signatures), to coastal advection and eddy circulation. We observe that divergent and convergent regions in the model show a strong bio-optical response (growth and decay of phytoplankton) in the imagery. Furthermore, particle tracking in the model is used to follow different river discharges and track the corresponding bio-optical response in the imagery. Using effective methods, these combined data sources provide new tools for coastal managers in assessing and predicting HABS, hypoxia and freshwater impacts.

The resolution of the ocean model (approx. 4 kilometers) and revolutionary hybrid (quasi-isopycnic) vertical coordinate makes it an excellent candidate to form the ocean model core of an ocean acoustic tomography program that can provide near real-time subsurface ocean data to augment satellite data that is routinely assimilated into ocean nowcast/forecast systems. Particular attention is paid to the upwelling of relatively cold water near the Yucatan Peninsula, the dynamics of cold-core cyclones and their role in the separation of Loop Current Eddies, and shelf-break processes in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico.

Understanding the dynamics of the LCS is fundamental to understanding the Gulf of Mexico's full oceanographic system, and vice versa. Hurricane intensity, offshore safety, harmful algal blooms, oil spill response, the entire Gulf food chain, shallow water nutrient supply, the fishing industry, tourism, and the Gulf Coast economy are all affected by the position, strength, and structure of the LC and associated eddies. This report recommends a strategy for addressing the key gaps in general understanding of LCS processes, in order to instigate a significant improvement in predicting LC/LCE position, evolving structure, extent, and speed, which will increase overall understanding of Gulf of Mexico circulation and to promote safe oil and gas operations and disaster response in the Gulf of Mexico. This strategy includes advice on how to design a long-term observational campaign and complementary data assimilation and numerical modeling efforts.

Research and protection strategies need to be developed, as the Baltic Sea is probably the most polluted sea in the world. Since the Baltic Sea has become an inner sea of the EU (apart from small shore parts of Russia in Petersburg and Kaliningrad), it is anticipated that the importance of the region will consequently rise. The book will arouse interest among students, scientists and decision makers involved with the Baltic problems. It will also give important background information for those working with biogeochemical processes in the Baltic Sea, because the physical forcing for those processes is of vital importance.

Covering coastal marine ecosystems of Latin America such as the NE and SE Pacific, NW Atlantic and Caribbean areas, it discusses the construction of quantitative (Ecopath-Ecosim-Ecospace and Centrality of Node Sets) and semi-quantitative (Loop Analysis) multispecies trophic-network models to describe and assess the impacts of natural and human interventions like pelagic and benthic fishing as well as natural events such as El Niño, and La Niña.
