Book excerpt: Can scientists and engineers replicate Nature and develop systems that operate in extreme environments? Bio-inspiration is an established concept which is developing to meet the needs of the many challenges we face particularly in defence and security. This book explores the potential of bio-inspired materials and sensing systems together with examples of how they are being implemented. It is not an exhaustive study of the subject but provides an overview of how bio-inspired or -derived approaches can be used to enhance components, systems and systems of systems for defence and security applications. Readers will gain an awareness of the complexity and versatility of bio-inspired components as well as an understanding of how these technologies can be applied in a variety of operational scenarios. Consideration is given to using a conceptual model that can be deployed in distributed or autonomous operations. Using this model, bio-inspiration with behavioural science plays a major role in identification, movement, searching strategies and pattern recognition for chemical and biological detection. Examples focus on both learning new things from nature that have application to the defence and security areas and adapting known discoveries for practical use by these communities. This graduate level monograph provides an increased awareness of the need for more sophisticated, networked sensors and systems in the defence and security communities and will be of interest to both specialists in this area and science and technology generalists.

Book excerpt: Examples of bio-inspired technology can be found almost everywhere in society: robots with specific capabilities, materials with unique physical and chemical properties, aerodynamic systems, and architectonic structures are a few examples of taking profit of evolution-driven processes to solve common engineering problems. One field of research taking advantage of bio-inspiration is that of acoustical engineering, aiming to find solutions to problems arising from the miniaturisation of microphones and loudspeakers. Studying the auditory organs of insects to seek inspiration for new design structures is one of the best ways to solve such an important problem. Another discipline of science that has experienced a research boom is that of materials science, as development of new materials has attracted the attention of researchers. In addition, three-dimensional (3D) printers have contributed to further development in materials science making the production process more efficient. The aim of this research is to bring these fields of science together to develop novel bioinspired, polymer-based sensors presenting functional specific acoustic properties after 3D-printing. While the study of complex biological hearing systems provides inspiration to develop sensors featuring specific properties, the use of polymer-based materials allows the customization of the manufacturing process, as the produced parts adapt to the desired needs. In this thesis one such insect auditory system that has been thoroughly studied is that of the desert locust Schistocerca gregaria as it presents a simple structure that allows for acoustic frequency selectivity and displays nonlinear acoustic phenomena. Prior to the development of a bio-inspired system, a mathematical description of the mechanical response of such a structure is presented. Furthermore, the physical behaviours measured on the locust tympanal membrane have been studied using finite element analysis. The 3D-printed functional sensors have been used to determine the degree of accuracy between experimental and theoretical results.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this research is to develop a biomimetic miniature underwater acoustic sensor for the measurement of the directivity of underwater sound. In contrast to a hydrophone array which detects direction by the arrival time of the sound waves this novel sensor is based on a mechanically coupled mechanism which amplifies the time delay by an order of two. In this research and design effort we develop a comprehensive mathematical model of the sensor in order to understand and optimize its performance characteristics. Fluid mass load and fluid-structure radiation are evaluated using both finite element analysis (FEA) and models obtained from the literature. It shows that the bio-inspired sensor can be designed to be directionally sensitive and operational at around up to 2 kHz within the current design limitation (2-D) and the micro range. This is because there is a tradeoff between the time delay amplification and the bandwidth of the sensor. This tradeoff and parametric study lead us to a design optimization of the sensor. For the design optimization, two independent optimization problems are solved: Amplification optimization of the time delay of the sensor and phase difference varying optimization with respect to the angle of incidence of the incoming sound. As an example, the results of the several different design optimizations are presented. Based on the design optimization, it is compared to the FEA simulation and shows a good agreement.

The primary goal of this effort is to construct a miniature device that is capable of detecting the orientation of an incident sound source with an accuracy of 2 deg. The design approach follows from our investigation of the mechanics of directional hearing in the parasitoid fly, Ormia ochracea. This animal has been shown to be able to detect changes in the line of bearing as small as 2 deg A. Mason, M. Oshinsky, and R. Hoy, "Hyperacute directional hearing in a micro-scale auditory system," Nature 4/5/01. The tympanal structures of the ears of this animal suggest a novel approach to designing very small directionally sensitive microphones. Candidate microphone diaphragm designs are presented that are being fabricated using silicon microfabrication technology. Model results indicate that the design can achieve significant performance improvements over the conventional approach of making directional microphones. This includes a nearly 20 dB reduction in self-noise, and roughly a factor of 10 improvement in low frequency sensitivity.
