Book Concepts of Biology

    Book Details:

  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2018-01-07
  • ISBN : 9789888407453
  • Pages : 618 pages

Book excerpt: Concepts of Biology is designed for the single-semester introduction to biology course for non-science majors, which for many students is their only college-level science course. As such, this course represents an important opportunity for students to develop the necessary knowledge, tools, and skills to make informed decisions as they continue with their lives. Rather than being mired down with facts and vocabulary, the typical non-science major student needs information presented in a way that is easy to read and understand. Even more importantly, the content should be meaningful. Students do much better when they understand why biology is relevant to their everyday lives. For these reasons, Concepts of Biology is grounded on an evolutionary basis and includes exciting features that highlight careers in the biological sciences and everyday applications of the concepts at hand.We also strive to show the interconnectedness of topics within this extremely broad discipline. In order to meet the needs of today's instructors and students, we maintain the overall organization and coverage found in most syllabi for this course. A strength of Concepts of Biology is that instructors can customize the book, adapting it to the approach that works best in their classroom. Concepts of Biology also includes an innovative art program that incorporates critical thinking and clicker questions to help students understand--and apply--key concepts.

Book excerpt: Some of the best players in Major League Baseball were born outside the United States, with Latino players representing one of the fastest growing ethnicities in the league. Current and former stars such as Albert Pujols, Rod Carew, and Miguel Cabrera all found incredible success in MLB. They have won major awards, guided their teams to the postseason, played in All-Star games, and an elite few have been enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame. Latino Stars in Major League Baseball: From Bobby Abreu to Carlos Zambrano celebrates the ever-increasing diversity of baseball in America. It includes more than 140 in-depth profiles of retired and active ballplayers representing countries across Latin America and the Caribbean. For many of these players, the road to “The Show” wasn’t easy—discrimination, poverty, language barriers, and government restrictions are major obstacles that Latino players have faced in the past and continue to face today. Author Jonathan Weeks covers these struggles and more in the profiles, showing the players’ strength, resiliency, and ultimately, their rise to the top of professional baseball. Latino Stars in Major League Baseball is a definitive collection of the best and brightest Latino stars both past and present. Full of colorful anecdotes and inspiring stories, this book provides a rich understanding of Latino players’ impact on baseball in the United States.

Book Transcription Factors

    Book Details:
  • Author : David Latchman
  • Publisher : OUP Oxford
  • Release : 1999-04-08
  • ISBN : 0191565792
  • Pages : 326 pages

Download or read book Transcription Factors written by David Latchman and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 1999-04-08 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the publication of the first edition five years ago, a wide range of new methodologies have been developed to facilitate studies on both isolated parts of the genome and the genome as a whole. This new edition has been updated and expanded so that it provides a comprehensive guide to the methods currently available to characterize the function and activity of an individual transcription factor. All the original chapters have been fully updated or rewritten and additional chapters cover the use of in vitro transcription assays, analysis of chromatin structure, use of the genomic binding site assay and analysis of transcription factor modifications. As with the previous edition, the book starts with a series of chapters concerned with characterizing the proteins binding to a specific DNA sequence and then a chapter on more detailed characterization of the protein itself. The next two chapters describe the isolation of cDNA clones encoding a transcription factor using oligonucleotides predicted from protein sequence and screening of a cDNA expression library. Chapter 6 deals with identification of transcription factors based on sequence homology analysis by both experimental screening and database searches. Chapter 7 is a new chapter that describes methods of identifying the target genes of a previously uncharacterized factor. The next chapters deal with analysis of transcription factor function. Chapter 8 deals with general techniques, and then the following chapters cover the specialized techniques of in vitro transcription assays using transcriptionally active nuclear extracts derived from rat brain, and analysis of the effect of transcription factors on chromatin structure. The final chapter describes methods for detecting the phosphorylation and glycosylation state of transcription factors.

Book Bio Futures

Download or read book Bio Futures written by Emmanuel Koukios and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-05-06 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a timely recognition, warning and mapping of the fast approaching wave, or “bio-tsunami”, of global socio-technical transformation, built by a much wider spectrum of converging powers, including biotechnology, new agriculture, novel foods, health, quality of life, environment, energy, sustainability, education, knowledge management, and design of smart applications. The book contains eight sections corresponding to different clusters of bioeconomic and socio-technical change, as identified by the editors’ “Scanning the Horizon” foresight research; it also offers an integrated view of the future bioeconomy landscape though the convergence of several technologies that affect everyday life. The clusters offer methodologies for forecasting the future bioeconomy, and how these predictions can affect target-setting and the orientation of policies and actions to manage cultural and societal change, and achieve sustainable development in less developed areas. The book will be of interest to researchers, producers, logistics experts, policy makers, regulators, business and financial institutions, and biotechnologists (e.g. geneticists, food experts, etc.).
