Book excerpt: Vapor-liquid equilibrium data, heat of mixing (excess enthalpies), and volumetric properties of systems are required for both the applications in design of industrial technological processes and the understanding the structure and the intermolecular interactions in the systems. On the basis of classical thermodynamics the measured experimental data combined together enable us the calculation of non-measurable thermodynamic properties significant for the technological calculations. The present volume is a compilation of experimental and derived property data on subcritical binary homogeneous (single-phase) or heterogeneous (two-phase) liquid–liquid mixtures. All the components are well-defined pure substances, which are organic nonelectrolytes and water. Only data obtained by, or derived from, direct experimental measurements are considered.The present Subvolume A reproduces in tables and graphs the numerical values for 800 binary mixtures (out of a total of 2846 systems). The remainder is published in Subvolumes B and C.

Book excerpt: Vapor–liquid equilibrium data form the basic information for chemical engineering calculations, in particular the design and operation of distillation plants in the chemical, pharmaceutical, polymer, petrochemical and related industries. The data are also important for understanding molecular interactions and developing theories of pure liquids and liquid mixtures because they are related to the structure and the energy of interaction of the molecules. The volumes in this series are compilations of vapor–liquid equilibrium data on subcritical binary homogeneous (single-phase) or heterogeneous (two-phase) liquid–liquid systems. All the components are well-defined pure substances, which are organic or inorganic nonelectrolytes, including low-melting ionic liquids and water. Only data obtained by direct experimental measurements are considered. Part 1 (07WIC1) has been published in 2007 with 3316 systems on a CD. Tables and graphs with numerical values are printed in the book for only 802 binary mixtures. The present Part 2 contains numerical data for 2297 additional systems, values for 860 binary systems are in the book. The ELBT.EXE program of Part 2 can be downloaded as electronic supplementary material (ESM) from the appendix in the HTML version of Chap. 3. It permits to search, retrieve, display and export the totality of 5613 numerical data sets of Part 1 and Part 2 in five formats: PDF (the same format as in the book), SELF, ELDATA, and the XML versions of SELF and ELDATA described in Chaps. 2.1, 3.5.2, and 3.5.3.

The update provides experimental data published in the years 2000 to 2006. The ?nal date for including data was December, 31st, 2006. Specialization and selection of data for this new update follows the intentions of the original volume. The focus is on non-electrolyte systems, and only data for pure liquids and binary liquid mixtures at normal pr- sure (or in some single cases at saturation vapor pressure) were taken into account for this volume. For m- tures, this data collection is restricted to binary liquid mixtures, i.e. no ternary systems and also no solutions of any solids, salts, electrolytes, polymers are included here. Surfactant solutions or micellar systems in water or other ?uids were not considered either. At least, also molten metals and metallic alloys, molten salts, molten glasses and other high-temperature melts were not taken into account. As the amount of data collected between 2000 and 2006 exceeds the available space for printing by far, the volume has an electronic version containing additional data which is available on www.landolt-boernstein.com.
