Book Billy the Kid From Houston Not Texas

Download or read book Billy the Kid From Houston Not Texas written by Bill Ramsey and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-09-21 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The decade of the fifties may have been the last to allow children to be children. Childhood in the fifties was innocent, happy, and carefree. Author Bill Ramsey was a child who grew up in that decade. In Billy the Kid (From Houston-Not Texas) he recalls those times and the townspeople, teachers, and neighbors in Houston, Pennsylvania. Ramsey and his family lived in a modest home in this small town in western Pennsylvania, where the townspeople helped him to become a man. His adult values and philosophies were shaped by that experience. This biographical memoir recounts the simple existence of children in the fifties, with the pick-up ball games, bike riding, and spontaneous play that today's children have replaced with television, the Internet and video games. It was a time when families ate meals together and fast food restaurants did not exist. It was a time when everyone knew his neighbors. The vignettes offered in Billy the Kid honor the memory of those carefree days and the joys of childhood. Although we can't return to those years, we can return to a simpler way of life that can be sustained and enjoyed.

Book excerpt: For many years, a man known as Brushy Bill Roberts proclaimed to all who would listen that he was the historical and legendary Billy the Kid, alive and well. And there were various books written that claimed this to be true. As a result, many became convinced of the validity of Brushy’s claim and Brushy's elaborate fable has continued to capture the imagination. In this book, the author has attempted to dispel the elaborate hoax once and for all. Brushy Bill Roberts was not Billy the Kid. He was, in fact, just an interesting elderly man, known by his family and acquaintances as a colorful Old West storyteller.

Book Billy the Kid

Download or read book Billy the Kid written by Daniel a Edwards and published by . This book was released on 2014-10-31 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1882 a notorious outlaw and a childhood friend of Billy the Kid was released from prison where he had been serving time for killing a Texas Ranger. His freedom finally secured, the outlaw disappeared and was never heard from again. Never, that is, until 1948 when he came out of hiding after almost 70 years. In the course of proving his identity to a court of law the outlaw revealed that his friend Billy the Kid was not killed by Pat Garrett but was still alive even to that day. After a period of research and persistence the young lawyer was finally led to a destitute old man in Texas who was named not William H. Bonney but William H. Roberts, although Bonney had been an alias that he had used. Roberts agreed to reveal himself as Billy the Kid if the lawyer would help him obtain a pardon so he could die a free man. You see, the Kid was still wanted for murder so to come forward was to risk being sentenced and put to death, but this was a risk that William H. Roberts was willing to take. He told his story only one time, to one man. This is his story, now presented for the first time with new photographic evidence and research that supports his claim that he was the one true Billy the Kid of legend.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The meaning of Bob Dylan’s songs has long been debated by fans, critics and academics. When, in 2016, Dylan was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, the significance of his songs was confirmed. Yet their meaning has never been demonstrably explained. Dylan himself has said that people can learn everything about him through his songs: “if they know where to look.” This book shows his millions of fans exactly where that is. Dylan has written hundreds of songs, many of which are acknowledged masterpieces. “Blowin’ in the Wind”, “Like a Rolling Stone”, “Mr.Tambourine Man”, the list goes on. In the 1960s, he was hailed as a prophet. Since then, he’s generally been considered a genius. One thing he’s always been, though, is an enigma. In Bob Dylan: What the Songs Mean, critic Michael Karwowski analyses the lyrics. In the process, he opens up all sorts of avenues into philosophy, mysticism, religion, literature, art, and, of course, music. This is a “must read” book for anyone who wants to learn more about the meaning behind the songs or anyone interested in understanding how a genius sees the world. It also considers the impact Dylan’s words have had - not only on his fans, but on the worlds of popular music, culture and beyond.

Download or read book Edward Eberstadt Sons written by Michael Vinson and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2016-08-08 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An unlikely bookseller in New York City became the leading dealer in rare Western Americana for most of the twentieth century. After working in western-U.S. and South American gold mines at the turn of the twentieth century, Edward Eberstadt (1883–1958) returned to his home in New York City in 1907. Through luck and happenstance, he purchased an old book for fifty cents that turned out to be a rare sixteenth-century Mexican imprint. From this bit of serendipity, Eberstadt quickly became one of the leading western Americana rare book dealers. In this book Michael Vinson tells the story of how Edward Eberstadt & Sons developed its legendary book collection, which formed the backbone of many of today’s top western Americana archives. Although the firm’s business records have not survived, Edward and his sons, Charles and Lindley, were all prodigious letter writers, and nearly every collector kept his or her correspondence. Drawing upon these letters and on his own extensive experience in the rare book trade, Vinson gives the reader a vivid sense of how the commerce in rare books and manuscripts unfolded during the era of the Eberstadts, particularly in the relationships between dealers and customers. He explores the backstory that scholars of art history and museology have pursued in recent decades: the assembling of cultural treasures, their organization for use, and the establishment of institutions to support that use. His work describes the important role this key bookselling firm played in the western Americana trade from the early 1900s to Eberstadt & Sons’ dissolution in 1975. From Yale University and the American Antiquarian Society to the Newberry Library and the Huntington Library, the firm of Edward Eberstadt & Sons has left its mark in western Americana repositories across the nation. Told here for the first time, the Eberstadt story reveals how one family’s business and legacy have shaped the study of the American West.

Book Revolvers and Pistolas Vaqueros and Caballeros

Download or read book Revolvers and Pistolas Vaqueros and Caballeros written by D. H. Figueredo and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2014-12-09 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This riveting exposé reveals how a distorted belief in Anglo superiority necessitated the rewriting of American western history, replacing heroic images of Mexican and Spanish cowboys with negative stereotypes. Early Anglo settlers in the Old West crafted negative images of Latinos in part to help justify the takeover of land occupied by Mexicans and Spaniards at the time. Unfortunately, these depictions were perpetuated throughout the 20th century in art, popular culture, and media ... eventually reshaping the narrative of the American West to the exclusion of the non-Anglo people. This book contrasts dominant lore with historical reality to provide a broad overview of the history and contributions of Latinos in the Old West. Author D. H. Figueredo sets out to debunk the myths and falsehoods of the American West by chronicling the cultural perceptions that led to such historical inaccuracies. Through spellbinding accounts, chapters address such topics as the legends behind the caballeros, Mexican culture in the Old West, and the search for cities of gold in the Southwest. Arranged chronologically and thematically, the book examines how popular culture diminished the role of the Mexican vaqueros and illustrates how the image of the Anglo cowboy became the iconic symbol of the Old West.
