Book excerpt: Billy Cannon’s name, his image, and his remarkable athletic career serve as emblems for Louisiana State University, the Southeastern Conference, and college football. LSU’s only Heisman Trophy winner, Cannon led the Tigers to a national championship in 1958, igniting a love of the game in Louisiana and establishing a tradition of greatness at LSU. But like many stories of lionized athletes who rise to the status of legend, there was a fall—and in the case of Billy Cannon, also redemption. For the first time, Charles N. deGravelles reveals in full the thrilling highs and unexpected lows of Cannon’s life, in Billy Cannon: A Long, Long Run. Through conversations with Cannon, deGravelles follows the athlete-turned-reformer from his boyhood in a working-class Baton Rouge neighborhood to his sudden rush of fame as the leading high school running back in the country. Personal and previously unpublished stories about Cannon’s glory days at LSU and his stellar but controversial career in the pros, as well as details of his indictment for counterfeiting and his post-release work as staff dentist at Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola, unfold in a riveting biography characterized by uncanny success, deep internal struggles, and a champion’s spirit that pushed through it all.

Book The Jazz Life of Dr Billy Taylor

Download or read book The Jazz Life of Dr Billy Taylor written by Billy Taylor and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2013-04-18 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The autobiography of the celebrated American jazz pianist, composer, activist, educator, and Emmy Award–winning broadcaster. Legendary jazz ambassador Dr. Billy Taylor’s autobiography spans more than six decades, from the heyday of jazz on 52nd Street in 1940s New York City to CBS Sunday Morning. Taylor fought not only for the recognition of jazz music as “America’s classical music” but also for the recognition of black musicians as key contributors to the American music repertoire. Peppered with anecdotes recalling encounters with other jazz legends such as Jelly Roll Morton, Duke Ellington, Art Tatum, Count Basie, Billie Holiday, and many others, The Jazz Life of Dr. Billy Taylor is not only the life story of a jazz musician and spokesman but also a commentary on racism and jazz as a social force. “This book (including Dr. Teresa L. Reed’s eloquent introduction) captures with great clarity and accuracy the character of this man. Taylor not only always aspired to excellence, he was also humble and generous of word and deed. The Jazz Life of Dr. Billy Taylor provides the backstory of why he must be remembered as one of the major leading lights of America’s classical music.” —New York City Jazz Record “In this excellent collaboration with author Teresa Reed, Dr. Billy Taylor, one of the most beloved and iconic figures in the jazz world, tells his extraordinary life story in his own words with characteristic humility, warmth, and eloquence. This is a book of major importance not only to the jazz field but also to the study of the African American social and cultural experience in the 20th and early 21st centuries. It is a must read—I couldn’t put it down!” —Dr. David N. Baker, Chair, Jazz Studies, Indiana University Jacobs School of Music; National Endowment for the Arts American Jazz Master “An impeccable memoir by one of America’s most celebrated renaissance men. . . . The writing is as fluid as it is gorgeous, captivating and inspiring. This monumental memoir offers an in-depth and critical analysis of American history through the lens of one the most decorated African American creative artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. . . . From amazing details of interactions with Malcolm X, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., John Coltrane and Mary Lou Williams to the behind-the-scenes inspirations for compositions such as “I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free,” “Don’t Go Down South” and “Peaceful Warrior”; this is a must read by anyone who claims to be remotely interested in American music, history, arts and culture.” —Emmett G. Price III, Ph.D, Executive Editor of Encyclopedia of African American Music

Book excerpt: A Colorado dentist claims to be the infamous gunman while mentoring a boy, romancing a widow, and protecting his friend from angry bootleggers. Pueblo, Colorado,1932. Bootleggers thrive in a town where the sheriff is on the take and you can kill a man with impunity. In this thrilling narrative, a once-famous outlaw finds himself thrust into the middle of a bootleg war against his will. At stake is nothing less than the life of his best friend and his last chance at true love with the town beauty. But is the legendary gunman who he claims to be, or is he just a retired dentist with a vivid imagination? Peter Meech reimagines the figure of Billy the Kid in a remarkable story told with verve, humor, grit, and grace. Praise for Billy (the Kid) “Like a vintage dime novel, Peter Meech imaginatively engages the reader with a once-upon-a-time version of Billy the Kid’s life and legacy.” —Larry McMurtry, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Lonesome Dove “Some story ideas are so good you just hope the writer doesn’t mess them up, and then there are the ones you read and just wish you’d written them—Billy (the Kid) is both. Peter Meech’s masterful handling of this Western is nothing short of dead on.” —Craig Johnson, New York Times–bestselling author of the Walt Longmire Mysteries “Vividly imagined, cleverly plotted, and superbly written, Peter Meech’s Billy (the Kid) provides definite and exhilarating proof that a new master of the Western—and the novel—just rode into town. What a wonderful and wonder-filled book!” —Christopher Knowlton, author of Cattle Kingdom: The Hidden History of the Cowboy West

Book The Duology

    Book Details:
  • Author : Zahn Pesh
  • Publisher : Xlibris Corporation
  • Release : 2014-12-12
  • ISBN : 1499043295
  • Pages : 272 pages

Download or read book The Duology written by Zahn Pesh and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-12-12 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Duology combines and revises two previous books – Visions, Voices & Violence (VVV) and Not Blood Uncle (NBU) – all by Zahn Pesh, to tell one story: How Vaney got in trouble with the San Francisco police (Chapters1-11) and how Zahn got him out of it (Chapters 12-17). Based on a true story, Pesh created these fictional memoirs to memorialize the epileptically disabled youth. To make Billy’s non-verbal communications intelligible to readers, Pesh created an argot based on the youth’s Midwestern dialect. Also, especially for strong verbs, the youth forms past tenses by adding d’s or t’s to infinitives (e.g., instead of “go, went, gone,” Billy says “go, go’d, go’d” or where t’s sound more natural “think, think’t, think’t”). Pesh also created a way (e.g., a new punctuation mark “hyphen hyphen” before direct thoughts) to indicate internalized thoughts. Further, all print-to-order royalties go directly to a nonprofit organization for gifts to the needy or matching awards to train police to distinguish between disabled persons and criminals. These books – The Duology, VVV and NBU – are available individually as e-books or in soft covers through Xlibris, Barnes and Nobel, and Amazon and the nonprofit organization James Floyd McKinney Foundation, where tax deductible donations are gratefully acknowledged and accepted.

Book excerpt: THE EXPLOSIVE NEW YORK TIMES AND NATIONAL BESTSELLER Push beyond your physical limits to improve yourself by following bowhunter and ultramarathoner Cameron Hanes's lifelong philosophies and disciplines. “It’s all mental.” I say this all the time, and it’s true. If you believe you can do it, you can. We all have virtually limitless potential. Our bodies are capable of so much more than what we ask of them. Take off the mental handcuffs, get out there, and start on your way today. What is your passion? You can become better at it. Committing yourself to fitness only fuels your beliefs. You gotta believe to achieve. Cameron Hanes discovered his true passion for bowhunting when he was twenty. Inspired by the physical challenges of stalking elk in the Oregon wilderness—traversing mountainous terrain, braving erratic weather, and evading his quarry’s even more dangerous predators—he began an ever-evolving journey of self-improvement. To become the best bowhunter of wild elk, to the caliber he believed he could be, Cam realized he would need more than archery skills. He would need the stamina and strength that could only come from an athletic training regimen of long-distance running and heavy-weight lifting. And every day for more than thirty years, Cam has put in the work, building miles and muscles, pushing through pain with a single-minded focus on the only goal worth having—besting himself time and again. Part memoir, part motivational manifesto, Endure reveals how Cam—a self-professed average guy—put himself through the paces to live the life of an expert bowhunter, respected writer, and family man. With discipline, sacrifice, resilience, a hard work ethic, and a belief in his own capabilities, Cam not only accomplished his dreams but continues to surpass them. There is no secret to his success except relentless determination and loyal dedication to his own self-worth. If Cam can do it, we all can. Everyone has what it takes to endure adversity so we can rise above average, be the best we can be, and enjoy living life to the fullest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a fictional memoir, Zahn Pesh tells the true story of a mentally disabled young man Billy, known affectionately as Vaney and Billys run-in with the San Francisco police. Often using Billy speak, the youths arcane lingo, the author reveals societys neglect and injustices toward such individuals. Wrongly, Billy is accused of making terrorist threats against a paramedic, but few other than Pesh believe the disabled kids story. Avoiding the blame game, Pesh shows how each from personal perspective does his duty, indiscriminately, but nonetheless Billy, or Vaney, suffers because the system fails. Billy is treated like a criminal, not as a patient, which Pesh insists he is. Try as he might, Pesh only meagerly reforms that system, before . . .
