Book The Duology

    Book Details:
  • Author : Zahn Pesh
  • Publisher : Xlibris Corporation
  • Release : 2014-12-12
  • ISBN : 1499043295
  • Pages : 272 pages

Download or read book The Duology written by Zahn Pesh and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-12-12 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Duology combines and revises two previous books – Visions, Voices & Violence (VVV) and Not Blood Uncle (NBU) – all by Zahn Pesh, to tell one story: How Vaney got in trouble with the San Francisco police (Chapters1-11) and how Zahn got him out of it (Chapters 12-17). Based on a true story, Pesh created these fictional memoirs to memorialize the epileptically disabled youth. To make Billy’s non-verbal communications intelligible to readers, Pesh created an argot based on the youth’s Midwestern dialect. Also, especially for strong verbs, the youth forms past tenses by adding d’s or t’s to infinitives (e.g., instead of “go, went, gone,” Billy says “go, go’d, go’d” or where t’s sound more natural “think, think’t, think’t”). Pesh also created a way (e.g., a new punctuation mark “hyphen hyphen” before direct thoughts) to indicate internalized thoughts. Further, all print-to-order royalties go directly to a nonprofit organization for gifts to the needy or matching awards to train police to distinguish between disabled persons and criminals. These books – The Duology, VVV and NBU – are available individually as e-books or in soft covers through Xlibris, Barnes and Nobel, and Amazon and the nonprofit organization James Floyd McKinney Foundation, where tax deductible donations are gratefully acknowledged and accepted.

Book Biofeedback for the Brain

Download or read book Biofeedback for the Brain written by Paul G. Swingle and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neurofeedback is a cutting-edge, drug-free therapeutic technique used by over a thousand licensed therapists in North America to treat a range of conditions from attention deficit and hyperactivity disorders to epilepsy, stroke, anxiety, migraine, and depression. First popularized in the 1970s, this naturalistic method is based on the idea that we can control our brain activity and that, through training, the brain can learn to modify its own electrical patterns for more efficient processing or to overcome various states of dysfunction. In Biofeedback for the Brain, Dr. Paul G. Swingle describes in clear and coherent language how these procedures work. With numerous actual case examples, readers follow the progress of clients from the initial "brain map" that shows the location and severity of the neurological abnormalities to the various stages of treatment. Conditions often considered untreatable by conventional health practitioners respond positively to neurotherapeutic treatment and Swingle describes many of these remarkable recoveries. Other chapters describe the use of neurotherapy for a variety of surprising purposes, including performance training for elite athletes, of which the most famous example is the Italian soccer team who considered the technique to be their "secret weapon" in attaining a World Cup victory. Despite wide-ranging success stories and the endorsement of the American Psychological Association, many health care practitioners remain skeptical of neurofeedback and the procedures are still not well-known by the public or conventional health care providers. This book provides a thorough, definitive, and highly readable presentation of this remarkable health care alternative that offers millions of individuals a chance for healing.

Billy has lost his identity, his wife is about to divorce him, his son despises him, and God seems like an impotent voyeur watching his suffering. His son's disappearance and near-death experience is a turning point for Billy and his friends as they face choices and events that could lead to Billy's self-destruction or renewal through forgiveness.

Book The Pacification of Earth

Download or read book The Pacification of Earth written by Dean Warren and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2008-09-03 with total page 738 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pacification of Earth is presented in three sections. Part I, American Revolt: By 2090 almost half of the now immense American population is on welfare. Brilliant, talking computers have stolen most service and middle management jobs, while exploding populations in the southern hemisphere monopolize dumb factory work. And aquifers dry, world wide, causing food shortages. Ben Bjorn, a blond, young Welfie of the merged San Diego and Los Angeles ghetto, escapes a life of squalor by entering the Marine Corps. Well educated by his uncle, he vows to somehow fix the worlds present ugliness. The U.S. invades Mexico with the object of building a death strip along the border that will keep back desperate migrants. Bjorn excels in the resulting combat that involves underwater fleets, personal armor, flechette weapons, and invisible vehicles. We see him grow from a nave, lusty youth to a self-disciplined warrior. The administration cuts Welfie rations while exporting wheat. In the disorder that follows, Bjorn helps his people, is given command of a self-defense Welfie battalion. Fights escalate to a civil war in which Bjorn is the military fist of a Welfie triumvirate. As Part I ends, the Welfies win, rations are equalized, and fertility depressant is dumped into all water supplies. Part II, The Crescent Strikes: As 2100 dawns, Chinese agents kidnap Bjorn and require, as ransom, the shipment of American wheat to their starving people. After our hero escapes by cleverly killing his captors, Europe pleads for military help against the Turkish-led Moslems who threaten invasion from across the Bosphorus. As if those two threats werent enough, American Achievers, the educated and employed class, seek their old power and perquisites. Rebellion simmers below the feet of the Welfie government. After Bjorn survives a Turkish assassination attempt, he flies one hundred and fifty thousand high technology troops to Romania and assumes command of European forces. Estranged from his wife, he also acquires a gorgeous German mistress. In early spring, the Moslems cross the Bosphorus into Europe and throw back part of Bjorns army. He builds defenses behind the Danube Canal. While retreating to that line, Bjorn wins the loyalty of European Achiever officers and raw Balkan units. Moslem armies strike Bjorns line. Defenders respond with fuel-air explosives, smart missiles, flechette rifles, stealth tanks, and microwave weapons that shut down electrical systems. Bjorns mistress, a tool of Achiever conspirators, tries to murder him. He encircles and defeats the Moslems. Bjorn then crushes an Achiever-led rebellion in Western Europe and establishes personal control. News that Chinese armies threaten Siberia convinces Bjorn that the survival of civilization requires he continue his conquests. A world empire is the only cure for humanitys ills. Part III, Imperial Power: In early spring of 2102, Bjorn is thirty years old. He boards his ramjet transport for Irkutsk, in Siberia, while the Chinese gather overwhelming forces nearby in Mongolia. Near his destination, anti-aircraft missiles hunt his aircraft but a brilliant pilot--an Anne Scowcraft--pancakes the aircraft on a swamp in the Siberian taiga. His small party ambushes the killers sent by the Achiever commander of the Russian defenses and finally reaches safety with the German Corps Bjorn has sent as reinforcements to the Slavs. Bjorn manages a Russian command change and a retreat. A romance with Anne grows while Bjorn prepares a defense on the Ob River and establishes a blocking force on the Old Silk Road into Kazakastan. These are the two major land invasion routes to and from China. He sets in motion the conquest of Turkey and Iran, and appoints his ex-wife chief of a world-wide fertility depressant campaign. He announces a World Federation and asks Latin America and Asia to

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1990s the big three networks were being challenged by upstarts FOX and the WB for viewer loyalty. Alongside must-see stalwarts like Frasier, Friends, and Seinfeld, the new networks introduced pop culture touchstones like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and The X-Files. Such shows not only made household names of their stars, but also thrived in syndication and some even graduated to the big screen. In that decade, shows such as ER, Everybody Loves Raymond, and Northern Exposure were vying for awards while programs like Beverly Hills, 90210 and Home Improvement drew in millions of viewers each week. Even after these shows departed the airwaves, they live on in syndication and on DVDs, entertaining many generations of viewers. In Television Series of the 1990s: Essential Facts and Quirky Details, Vincent Terrace presents readers with a cornucopia of information about sixty programs from the decade. For example, did you know that Ally McBeal’s favorite brand of ice cream is Ben and Jerry’s? Or that Hank Hill’s shoe size is 12? Or that Carrie Bradshaw’s favorite cookie is Double-Stuff Oreos? These are just a handful of hundreds of fun and intriguing specifics found inside this volume. Programs from all of the major networks—as well as select syndicated programs and HBO—are represented here. This is not a book of opinions or essays about specific television programs but a treasure trove of facts associated with each show. FromNiles Crane’s I.Q score to George Constanza’s high score on Frogger, readers will discover a wealth of fascinating information that, for the most part, cannot be found elsewhere. In some cases, the factual data detailed herein is the only such documentation that currently exists on bygone shows of the era. Television Series of the 1990s is the ideal reference for fans of this decade and anyone looking to stump even the most knowledgeable trivia expert.

Book Visions Voices and Violence

Download or read book Visions Voices and Violence written by Zahn Pesh and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-09 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a "fictional memoir," Zahn Pesh tells the true story of a mentally disabled young man Billy, known affectionately as Vaney and Billy's run-in with the San Francisco police. Often using "Billy speak," the youth's arcane lingo, the author reveals society's neglect and injustices toward such individuals. Wrongly, Billy is accused of making "terrorist threats" against a paramedic, but few other than Pesh believe the disabled kid's story. Avoiding the blame game, Pesh shows how each from personal perspective does his duty, indiscriminately, but nonetheless Billy, or Vaney, suffers because the system fails. Billy is treated like a criminal, not as a patient, which Pesh insists he is. Try as he might, Pesh only meagerly reforms that system, before . . .

This is a personal story of the educational process at one of the world's great technological universities. Pepper White entered MIT in 1981 and received his master's degree in mechanical engineering in 1984. His account of his experiences, written in diary form, offers insight into graduate school life in general—including the loneliness and even desperation that can result from the intense pressure to succeed—and the purposes of engineering education in particular. The first professor White met at MIT told him that it did not really matter what he learned there, but that MIT would teach him how to think. This, then, is the story of how one student learned how to think. There have of course been changes at MIT since 1984, but its essence is still the same. White has added a new preface and concluding chapter to this edition to bring the story of his continuing education up to date.
