Book Creating an Inclusive School

Download or read book Creating an Inclusive School written by Richard A. Villa and published by ASCD. This book was released on 2005-02-15 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this comprehensive resource on inclusive schooling, administrators, general and special educators, and parents explore how inclusive education can support a diverse student body at all grade levels. They show how schools can meet standards and provide a "least restrictive environment" for students with disabilities by using cooperative learning, teaming, multi-age grouping, multicultural education, social skills training, and educational technology applications. And they explain how to facilitate change by using universal design principles and other curricular, instructional, assessment, and organizational practices. The authors examine the prevailing myths and the most frequently asked questions about inclusive education, and they provide an extensive list of resources. Woven through the book are the personal stories of people with disabilities and the educators and parents who work with them. As their voices make clear, inclusion is more than an educational buzzword; inclusion is a way of life, based on the belief that each individual is valued and belongs. Book The Principal and Strategic Planning

Download or read book The Principal and Strategic Planning written by William E. Webster and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For principals leading site-based structuring and improvement efforts, strategic planning is an important tool. Strategic planning melds short-term and long-term planning models and considers outside variables and school resources. Teaching staff, community members, district office personnel, and consultants all have essential roles in strategic planning. Additionally, strategic planning provides structure for accountability in school change and reform. Many reform efforts have failed largely because they did not utilize effective planning mechanisms. For principals, it is best to seek district wide support for strategic planning. Also, teachers, administrators, and others involved should attend strategic planning training sessions. Individual strategies and preventive action must be taken to limit resistance to strategic planning. Committees are the basic means for site-level strategic planning. An Organizational Status Report that includes data inventories of the school, staff, and community is the committee's first task. Next, a brief mission statement should be drafted defining where the school is and where it is headed. Broad goals and objectives, the means to achieve goals, should then be formulated. With goals and objectives set, specific activities can be planned. Finally, a monitoring system should be established. All parties should be familiar with the plan prior to implementation, and changes should be expected. (Contains 12 references.) (JPT)

Book Toward a New Era of Learning Untangling Our Next Public Education

Download or read book Toward a New Era of Learning Untangling Our Next Public Education written by Wilson Winnitoy and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-05-07 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What will our next public education system and its schools be like? It is a good question, but not one, unfortunately, that is on everyone's mind, at least not for now. We are too busy trying to fix the system we have, too busy to look ahead. We do not have to look very far. Our next public education system, and its new approach to learning, is already revealing itself. It is visible in the pressures from parents and their ceaseless efforts to influence profoundly the quality of the experience their children have in school. It is visible in the creative efforts of many dedicated teachers and school administrators as they surmount, day after day, the dehumanizing tendencies of large-scale mass education. This book is a look into the future. We must rethink the meaning of the values and beliefs that drove the creation of the public schools over 100 years ago. We must translate them into a new kind of learning that responds to the challenges and opportunities of our time and place in history.
