Book Racial Discrimination

Download or read book Racial Discrimination written by Masoud Kamali and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-08-18 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is an institutionalized dilemma in Europe that counteracts social cohesion and stability. It is a result of the collision and incompatibility between declarations of universal values (such as human rights and democracy) and institutionalized actions which exclude and discriminate against Europeans of immigrant background and against ethnic minorities. This book analyzes the institutional patterns and politics of ‘racial’ discrimination in modern-day Europe. Based on a research project that has been carried out under the leadership of the author in eight European countries, Racial Discrimination seeks the answers to some of the key questions posed by the latest developments in European political and public spheres concerning immigration and the increase in xenophobic sentiments and parties. The book will appeal to all social and political scientists interested in the latest political developments in Europe and in the problems of democratic citizenship and the efforts to move toward an integrated European community.

Book Translation as Stylistic Evolution

Download or read book Translation as Stylistic Evolution written by Federico M. Federici and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2009 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why did Italo Calvino decide to translate Les Fleurs bleues by Raymond Queneau? Was his translation just a way to pay a tribute to one of his models? This study looks at Calvino's translation from a literary and linguistic perspective: Calvino's I fiori blu is more than a rewriting and a creative translation, as it contributed to a revolution in his own literary language and style. Translating Queneau, Calvino discovered a new fictional voice and explored the potentialities of his native tongue, Italian. In fact Calvino's writings show a visible evolution of poetics and style that occurred rather abruptly in the mid 1960s; this sudden change has long been debated. The radical transformation of his style was affected by several factors: Calvino's new interests in linguistics, in translation theory, and in the act of translation. Translation as Stylistic Evolution analyses several passages in detail and scrutinizes quantitative data obtained by comparing digital versions of the original and Calvino's translation. The results of such assessment of Calvino's text-consistency suggest clear interpretations of the motives behind Calvino's radical and remarkable change of style that are tied to his notion of creative translation.

Book A Compendium of Lacanian Terms

Download or read book A Compendium of Lacanian Terms written by Huguette Glowinski and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jacques Lacan (1901-81) was one of the most original and controversial thinkers of the post-war period. His ideas had a profound effect on the intellectual movements of his time and his work is of continuing importance to a wide range of disciplines: psychoanalytic theory and practice, literary criticism, critical social theory, linguistics, cinema, art criticism and political science. Lacan's ideas can, however, be notoriously difficult: convoluted, idiosyncratic, arcane, and almost always obscure! A Compendium of Lacanian Terms provides students of Lacan with a clear and helpful exposition on some 40 key terms. Each entry outlines the conceptualization of the idea, locating it within Lacanian discourse, and the evolution of the term within the development of Lacan's ideas. A list of references is provided at the end of each entry. The editors' brief essay-like descriptions of key Lacanian terms are a superb idea, much needed in both academic and clinical arenas of psychoanalytic world. - Choice - Jan 2002

  • Pages : 277 pages

Download or read book Past in the Making written by Michal Kopecek and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historical revisionism, far from being restricted to small groups of ‘negationists,’ has galvanized debates in the realm of recent history. The studies in this book range from general accounts of the background of recent historical revisionism to focused analyses of particular debates or social-cultural phenomena in individual Central European countries, from Germany to Ukraine and Estonia. Where is the borderline between legitimate re-examination of historical interpretations and attempts to rewrite history in a politically motivated way that downgrades or denies essential historical facts? How do the traditional ‘national historical narratives’ react to the ‘spill-over’ of international and political controversies into their ‘sphere of influence’? Technological progress, along with the overall social and cultural decentralization shatters the old hierarchies of academic historical knowledge under the banner of culture of memory, and breeds an unequalled democratization in historical representation. This book offers a unique approach based on the provocative and instigating intersection of scholarly research, its political appropriations, and social reflection from a representative sample of Central and East European countries.

Book The Great Cholesterol Con

Download or read book The Great Cholesterol Con written by Dr Malcolm Kendrick and published by Kings Road Publishing. This book was released on 2008-07-07 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Statins are widely prescribed to lower blood cholesterol levels and claim to offer unparalleled protection against heart disease. Believed to be completely safe and capable of preventing a whole series of other conditions, they are the most profitable drug in the history of medicine. In this groundbreaking book, GP Malcolm Kendrick exposes the truth behind the hype. He will change the way we think about cholesterol forever. Rubbishing the diet-heart hypothesis, in which clinical trials 'prove' that high cholesterol causes heart disease and a high-fat diet leads to heart disease, Kendrick lambastes a powerful pharmaceutical industry and unquestioning medical profession, who, he claims, perpetuate the madcap concepts of 'good' and 'bad' cholesterol and cholesterol levels to convince millions of people to unnecessarily spend billions of pounds on statins. Clearly and comprehensively debunking assumptions on what constitute a healthy lifestyle and diet, "The Great Cholesterol Con" is the accessible, indispensable and absorbing case against statins and for a more common-sense approach to heart disease and general wellbeing. No more over-hyped miracle drugs; no more garlic, red wine, anti-oxidants, fruit or vegetables; even a vegetarian diet is rejected in this controversial yet authoritative critique of how we have been mislead over how food and drugs affect our coronary health. Here, for the first time, is the invaluable guide for anyone who though there was a miracle cure for heart disease, "The Great Cholesterol Con" is a fascinating breakthrough that will set dynamite under the whole area.

Book How Statin Drugs Really Lower Cholesterol and Kill You One Cell at a Time

Download or read book How Statin Drugs Really Lower Cholesterol and Kill You One Cell at a Time written by James B. Yoseph and published by Hannah Yoseph. This book was released on 2012 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Yosephs have written the most stunning expose. In plain language they reveal the science, the corruption and the enormous conspiracy it took to bring statins to market. As fast paced as a Mickey Spillane novel they report the research, the fraud and the facts like a detective in hot pursuit of a Nazi war criminal. It is riveting. They have accomplished the impossible: they have made both complex science and medical history fascinating to read. What could not be done in an expose they accomplished with almost unbelievablable ease. It will change your paradigms about medicine forever."--p.[4] of cover.

Book The Controversy on Images from Calvin to Baronius

Download or read book The Controversy on Images from Calvin to Baronius written by Giuseppe Scavizzi and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1992 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book demonstrates how Calvin's uncompromising stance on sacred images gained favor throughout Europe and was increasingly seen in the years between 1550 and 1600 as the unavoidable culmination of the Sola Scriptura principle. It also documents in detail how Catholic doctrine evolved to counteract the radical positions of Calvinism and how this doctrine translated through pastoral action into the new artistic trends - in both architecture and painting - which dominated the Seventeenth century.
