Book Bridging Language Boundaries Explorations in Communication across Borders

Download or read book Bridging Language Boundaries Explorations in Communication across Borders written by Thomas Tinnefeld and published by htw saar. This book was released on 2023-09-26 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an increasingly interconnected world, where distances dwindle and cultures interweave, the role of communication gains renewed significance. Language, our primary form of expression and comprehension, acts both as a border and a bridge for ideas, knowledge, and experiences. Amidst this complex linguistic interplay, this volume finds its purpose. Chapters herein delve into communication surpassing geographic and linguistic boundaries. As language professionals, educators, and researchers, we navigate the challenges of this landscape where languages blend and merge. These chapters analyse and inspire queries that arise whenever linguistic borders are crossed. From exploring the functions of intercomprehension to examining the impact of digital tools on borderless language education, each chapter reveals a facet of the theme. Topics span language methodologies, language acquisition, linguistic landscapes, and the growing importance of technology in teaching, to name but a few. Readers are invited to join us in exploring how communication shapes and is shaped by diverse linguistic environments. Together, we illuminate the threads that determine global interaction, delivering insight into the functioning of language in our interconnected world.

Book Content and Language Integrated Learning CLIL A Methodology of Bilingual Teaching

Download or read book Content and Language Integrated Learning CLIL A Methodology of Bilingual Teaching written by Bernd Klewitz and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2021-05-19 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learning foreign languages is a process of acquiring authentic contents in cultural contexts. In this respect, bilingual programs provide an effective connection between content-based studies and linguistic activities. The European umbrella term CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) not only comprises the aims and objectives of a sustainable format of teaching foreign languages but also the priority of content over language, in other words: language follows content, as in the Bauhaus precept form follows function. But in order to effectively integrate content and language, a comprehensive pedagogical approach is needed that goes beyond existing curricula and guidebooks. Bernd Klewitz aims at establishing the CLIL methodology by linking content requirements of subject areas, especially those in the social sciences, with linguistic building blocks and tools. The integrative methodology of bilingual programs extends to the study of literature, traditionally a domain of language tuition, but thought to be a seminal part of CLIL as well. The building blocks and language tools presented in this volume focus on learning foreign languages in cultural contexts, aims, and objectives of CLIL, parameters of an integrated bilingual teaching strategy, dimensions of bilingual learning, elements of a CLIL concept, Literary CLIL, CLIL tools and strategies, modules with worked examples, challenges, and desiderata, and a comprehensive glossary. Each section is completed with an interactive part of review, reflection, and practice.

Book The Magic of Language

Download or read book The Magic of Language written by Thomas Tinnefeld and published by htw saar. This book was released on 2020-12-28 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Language is magic. This magic happens when new ideas come to our minds or when we come across notions which are new to us, i.e. when we use language productively and construct our own world. The magic (in the productivity) of language works in various linguistic areas, e.g. phonetics, lexicology, phraseology, pragmatics, languages for specific purposes and multilingualism. In language teaching and learning, this magic comes into effect when language meets content, when we try to adapt our teaching to our learners’ needs or when we need to leave our comfort zone to take risks. With contributions by Lizeta Demetriou, Bessie Dendrinos, Olga Dobrunoff, Rashit Emini, Douglas Fleming, Thomas H. Goetz, Ourania Katsara, Bernd Klewitz, Katrin Menzel, Torten Piske, Lea Pöschik, Ronald Kresta, Nikolay Slavkov, Anja Steinlen, and Brikena & Gëzim Xhaferi, this edited volume features articles that cover a diversity of research findings which deal with the magic of language in various contexts and linguistic settings in Europe, America and Asia. Book Teach it in English Implementing English in the Political Classroom

Download or read book Teach it in English Implementing English in the Political Classroom written by Janine Franke and published by Anchor Academic Publishing (aap_verlag). This book was released on 2013-08 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Content and language integrated learning (CLIL) has recently gained great popularity in German schools. Reports of teachers and pupils indicate that in bilingual lessons foreign language learning is perceived to be less artificial and far more motivating than in traditional language teaching. In contrast to conventional language learning CLIL emphasises subject specific contents. Although many teachers are not sure in which way English as predominant medium of instruction should be taught, most of the rather experimental attempts to do so are reported to be successful. Nevertheless, in some German states there neither is a curriculum, nor are there any recommendations specifically developed on the needs of different subjects taught in the integrated way. CLIL requires teachers to be strongly committed and to invest extra time and work to turn this relatively new concept into a success. But what is their motivation for establishing such learning environments? To find out about some of the reasons why CLIL is currently so successful in German schools, I examine the example of political education in Saxony and the extra benefits of CLIL when being taught in English.

Book English in Academia

Download or read book English in Academia written by Claus Gnutzmann and published by Narr Francke Attempto Verlag. This book was released on 2008-08-20 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In times of political and economic globalisation proficiency in the English language has developed into a key competence. The supremacy of English has also manifested itself in academic communication; research and teaching across all disciplines are becoming more and more anglophone. Consequently, academia and the English language as a medium of academic discourse are faced with new challenges and opportunities. On the one hand, the spread of English entails the risk of Anglo-American dominance in cultural and scientific realms leading to disadvantages for non-native speakers of English. On the other hand, English as a common lingua franca is able to function as a catalyst for international cooperation in research and teaching. The articles in this bilingual (German/English) anthology focus on discussing the advantages and disadvantages of an increasing anglophony in academia.
