Book The United States of Toyota

Download or read book The United States of Toyota written by Peter M. De Lorenzo and published by . This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States of Toyota is many stories in one. First and foremost, it is a business story, detailing the decline of the American automobile industry - and the simultaneous rise of an Asian manufacturer to take its place. It is also a history book, providing an intimate portrait of the larger-than-life personalities and cars that led the American auto industry through its glory days and down the path toward extinction. It is a political/current affairs piece, presenting the rise of a Japanese company - Toyota - not just in terms of its sales success but also in terms of its cultural success, as it works to assimilate into American society. And finally, it is a never-before-seen primer on Detroit - The Motor City - a town and a region dominated by the auto companies, their suppliers and their ad agencies - and by a mindset and culture all its own. In commentary that is as accurate as it is blunt, Peter De Lorenzo presents the players and the action in the auto business in a way not seen before in print. His voice is unique and refreshingly candid. His provocative analyses and assessments - grounded in personal experience and a lifelong immersion in all things automotive - present a compelling picture of the state of the auto business - how it used to be, what it has become and where it is headed. From the arrogance and short-sightedness of the Detroit manufacturers to the acumen and relentlessness of Toyota, The United States of Toyota paints an insightful portrait of an iconic American industry as it struggles for survival in the early years of the 21st century.

Book Car Wars Fifty Years of Backstabbing Infighting And Industrial Espionage in the Global Market

This book was released on 2012-01-05 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An "astonishing...eye-opening chronicle" (Publisher's Weekly) of backstabbing, infighting, and industrial theft and espionage in the world's biggest business. It makes empires; it destroys economies; it shapes history. Welcome to the world's biggest business--the automobile industry. A hundred years ago there were six highly experimental cars. Today there are close to 400 million cars on the planet: set bumper to bumper on a six-lane highway, they would stretch well over 200,000 miles, more than eight times around the earth. With hundreds of billions of dollars at stake, is it any wonder that the major car companies wage a relentless war against one another, where (almost) anything goes? Here is the story of all the schemes and deceits, treacheries and shady deals in the battle for the world's car markets since the dawn of the global economy fifty years ago. The first true biography of the automobile, Car Wars gives us the automotive history as seen through the windshield of the car--with stories so spectacular they are often hard to believe. From Gianni Agnelli's deal to make Fiats in the USSR at the height of the cold war and Jose Ignacio Lopez's defection from GM to VW, through Pehr Gyllenhammar's foiled attempt to merge Volvo and Renault, and on to Nicolas Hayek's deal with Mercedes-Benz to build the Swatchcar in 1997, Car Wars is a roller coaster ride down the freeways and the back roads of the world's premier business, and an eye-opening history of the world's best-known and most-loved cars.

Download or read book Nanovation written by Kevin Freiberg and published by Thomas Nelson Inc. This book was released on 2011-08-23 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nanovation is a story of how a little car is teaching the world to think big. One dreary, rainy morning in India, Ratan Naval Tata, the Chairman of the Tata Group, was driving to work, right behind a family of four. It wasn’t an unfamiliar sight, all four of them crammed onto a single scooter, trying to get to school and work. Then it happened—a busy intersection, a slick road, and down they went, scooter one direction, family members the other. Fortunately, no one was seriously hurt because the congested traffic had been moving so slowly. But it gave new impetus to an idea Tata had been working on: as the chairman of a car company, how could he get Indian families off scooters and into something safer that they could afford? Today we have the answer, and it’s called the Nano, the least expensive—and arguably most significant—car in the world. Nanovation is not only the story of one car; it represents the leading edge of a revolution in business thinking and design that will have a profound effect on everything that comes after it, not just in the automotive industry, not just in India, but in every industry around the world.

Book Functional Structure in Morphology and the Case of Nonfinite Verbs

Download or read book Functional Structure in Morphology and the Case of Nonfinite Verbs written by Peter Juul Nielsen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-06-10 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Peter Juul Nielsen examines the foundations of morphological theory from a structural-functional perspective on language as a sign system. He offers a framework for the analysis of morpheme relations based on a thorough discussion of syntagmatic and paradigmatic structure, indexical relations, zero as meaningful absence and morphological relations across grammatical categories. It is argued that when paradigmatically related morphological structures have different syntactic functions, the semantics of the paradigmatic opposition consists in the specification of functional potential. The framework is applied in three detailed studies of Danish nonfinite verbs presenting new accounts of their morphological structure, semantic coding and paradigmatic organisation.
