Book excerpt: We live in an era in which knowledge generation alone can no longer work if it does not connect with the scientific developments in brain and cognitive domains. In our age, significant improvements in information and computer technologies are encouraged factors for scientists, researchers and instructors to re-build and re-design the knowledge. Nowadays an educational project as a scientific activity is considered to be more meaningful as long as it serves cognitive purposes. The scholars who are expected to be aware of the fact that they are living in the age of cognition, communication and computer, do not only deal with current educational problems but also have to try reconstructing and improving the quality of education according to the day. If we take account of all these, the book Current Debates in Education, a collection of the papers about various studies in the fields of Education, presented in The VII. International Congress on CUDES 2018 serves precisely this purpose. CUDES 2018 on Education book presents thirteen leading studies about multiple educational areas on different topics varying from developments in educational sciences and technologies to new perspectives about teaching and learning strategies most of which based on cognitive skills.

Book Cross curricular Approaches to Teaching and Learning

Download or read book Cross curricular Approaches to Teaching and Learning written by Chris Rowley and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2009-09-14 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What would the primary curriculum look like with humanities at its heart? How can cross-curricular work help children to learn more effectively? With practical ideas on how to join up the primary curriculum, this book uses history and geography to explore different contexts and strategies for making links between the full range of primary subjects, so that learning can be more integrated and relevant to learners. The authors demonstrate how these subjects can serve as the basis upon which values can be developed in the curriculum. There are powerful case studies, including examples of pupils′ work and talk, and teachers′ reflections. Additional materials to accompany the book can be found at: www.sagepub.co.uk/rowleyandcooper Written by a group of practising teachers and university tutors, this book will be invaluable to primary teachers, student teachers and all those involved in curriculum design. Chris Rowley is Senior Lecturer in and Geographical and Environmental Education at the University of Cumbria, UK. Dr Hilary Cooper is Professor of History and Pedagogy at the University of Cumbria, UK.

Book Second Language Acquisition Processes in the Classroom

Download or read book Second Language Acquisition Processes in the Classroom written by Amy Snyder Ohta and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2001 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first study to examine how interactional style develops within the walls of a foreign language classroom in the first two years of language study. Results show learners to be highly sensitive to pragmatic information and that learners can move toward an appropriate interactional style through classroom interactive experience. The book shows how learners are most often sources who offer assistance and correction, with errors serving most often to stimulate further thinking about what form is correct. Analysis shows learners to be active in seeking corrective information in the classroom setting, not only from peer partners but also from the teacher. They are active in noticing how the teacher's utterances--even when addressed to others--contrast with their own, and utilize corrective feedback intended for other students. In addition, the results show that teacher-initiated corrective feedback addressed to individual learners is only one source of corrective feedback. Learners are shown to be active in both teacher-fronted and peer interactive settings. In newer L2 teaching methodologies which focus on the use of peer interactive tasks, the teacher's role has been de-emphasized. This book, however, shows how important the teacher's role is. The final chapter examines how the teacher can act to maximize the benefits of peer interactive tasks through how they design tasks and present them to the class. First, the chapter looks at how learners use English--their L1--in the classroom, concluding that how teachers present activities to the class has an impact on the amount of L1 used by students during peer interaction. Following up on this finding, the chapter works to address questions that teachers face in lesson planning and teaching. It presents a useful list of questions teachers can ask when designing peer interactive tasks in order to maximize the effectiveness of a wide variety of language learning tasks.

Download or read book Reading Fluency written by Timothy Rasinski and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-01-21 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading fluency has been identified as a key component of proficient reading. Research has consistently demonstrated significant and substantial correlations between reading fluency and overall reading achievement. Despite the great potential for fluency to have a significant outcome on students’ reading achievement, it continues to be not well understood by teachers, school administrators and policy makers. The chapters in this volume examine reading fluency from a variety of perspectives. The initial chapter sketches the history of fluency as a literacy instruction component. Following chapters examine recent studies and approaches to reading fluency, followed by chapters that explore actual fluency instruction models and the impact of fluency instruction. Assessment of reading fluency is critical for monitoring progress and identifying students in need of intervention. Two articles on assessment, one focused on word recognition and the other on prosody, expand our understanding of fluency measurement. Finally, a study from Turkey explores the relationship of various reading competencies, including fluency, in an integrated model of reading. Our hope for this volume is that it may spark a renewed interest in research into reading fluency and fluency instruction and move toward making fluency instruction an even more integral part of all literacy instruction.

Download or read book STEM Project Based Learning written by Robert M. Capraro and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-20 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition of Project-Based Learning (PBL) presents an original approach to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) centric PBL. We define PBL as an “ill-defined task with a well-defined outcome,” which is consistent with our engineering design philosophy and the accountability highlighted in a standards-based environment. This model emphasizes a backward design that is initiated by well-defined outcomes, tied to local, state, or national standard that provide teachers with a framework guiding students’ design, solving, or completion of ill-defined tasks. This book was designed for middle and secondary teachers who want to improve engagement and provide contextualized learning for their students. However, the nature and scope of the content covered in the 14 chapters are appropriate for preservice teachers as well as for advanced graduate method courses. New to this edition is revised and expanded coverage of STEM PBL, including implementing STEM PBL with English Language Learners and the use of technology in PBL. The book also includes many new teacher-friendly forms, such as advanced organizers, team contracts for STEM PBL, and rubrics for assessing PBL in a larger format.
