Book excerpt: Bile acids are increasingly being seen as extremely important carcinogenic agents in cancers of the bile duct, liver, colon, rectum, and oesophagus. They are essential agents involved in lipid digestion and absorption in mammals, however, they also play wide-ranging roles in a variety of disease states ranging from diabetes to cancer. They have evolved exquisite mechanisms for controlling their own synthesis and to ensure that they are produced at correct concentrations and also kept in the correct anatomical environment. It is only when these fine levels of controls are breached that Bile aci.

Book The Chemistry of Linear Oligopyrroles and Bile Pigments

Download or read book The Chemistry of Linear Oligopyrroles and Bile Pigments written by Heinz Falk and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: so easy it seemed Once found, which yet unfound most would have thought Impossible. (John Milton, 1608 -1674) There are essentially two types of books on a scientific subject: in the first one several authors contribute their specialized approaches to parts of the field in question, which then are edited and compiled to yield a comprehensive and authoritative account. In the second type of book a single author tries to pre sent a view from an individual standpoint which might lead to a more balanced and homogeneous source of information. Both kinds have their merits and de ficiencies. I decided to write this book as a monolithic piece of work for several rea sons. Of course, there was the challenge of coping with the many problems of such an undertaking due to the fact that this field has grown tremendously during the last decades. In addition, being heavily involved in linear oligopyr role chemistry for nearly two decades, it seemed worthwile to prepare a more unifying approach. The request of several colleagues from abroad to give an account in English also triggered this endeavor since most of the work of my group has been published in German.

Download or read book Mammalian Sterols written by Damjana Rozman and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-08-10 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive description of sterols and their novel biological roles in mammalian signaling, the book covers their biosynthesis and structure, describes sterol receptor -mediated actions, their tissue distribution and their role in disease. It offers insight into new research findings, focusing specifically on novel discoveries in bile acid and oxysterol signaling, including the lanosterol-to-cholesterol intermediates. Special attention is paid on the sex distribution of these sterols (male or female) and their sexually dimorphic roles in mammalian species, such as human, rat and mouse. Since sterols and drugs (xenobiotics) use many identical receptor-mediated signaling pathways, the book will be interesting for researchers working on the cross-road of endogenous and xenobiotic metabolism, it is intended for advanced students and scientists in molecular biology and biochemistry as well as for medical doctors in hepatology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past 10 years there has been a veritable explosion of knowledge in working in this area are fortunate to meet their bile acid research. Those colleagues from time to time at International Meetings which are often held in attractive parts of the world. The 7th International Symposium on bile acids 'Bile Acids in Gastroenterology' was no exception. It took place in Cortina d'Ampezzo in the heart of the Italian Dolomites, from 17th-20th March 1982. This meeting was organised by a Scientific Committee, with representatives from Italy, the United States and Great Britain, in collaboration with the Italian Society of Gastroenterology. The format of the meeting was somewhat different from that of previous years. In addition to the free communications (verbal and poster presentations) which characte rise many scientific meetings, there was also an Advanced Postgraduate Course on bile acids given by a distinguished international panel of experts. Their contributions form the basis for this timely volume which should be of interest both to basic scientists and to clinical investigators alike. The editors are indebted to Dr Gian Germano Giuliani, Gipharmex SpA, Milano, whose generous support made the meeting possible. They also thank Mr P. M. Lister, Managing Editor, MTP Press Limited and Mrs Veronica Cesari, Italian Society of Gastroenterology for help with the publication of these proceedings. R.
