Book Bilderwelten Weltbilder

Download or read book Bilderwelten Weltbilder written by Ulrike Tischler and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2010 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book The City and the Railway in the World from the Nineteenth Century to the Present

Download or read book The City and the Railway in the World from the Nineteenth Century to the Present written by Ralf Roth and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-07-18 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the relationship between cities and railways over three centuries. Despite their nearly 200-year existence, The City and the Railway in the World shows that urban railways are still politically and historically important to the modern world. Since its inception, cities have played a significant role in the railway system; cities were among the main reasons for building such efficient but lavish and costly modes of transport for persons, goods, and information. They also influenced the technological appearance of railways as these have had to meet particular demands for transport in urban areas. In 25 essays, this volume demonstrates that the relationship between the city and the railway is one of the most publicly debated themes in the context of daily lives in growing urban settings, as well as in the second urbanisation of the global South with migration from rural to urban landscapes. The volume’s broad geographical range includes discussions of railway networks, railway stations, and urban rails in countries such as India, Japan, England, Belgium, Romania, Nigeria, the USA, and Mexico. The City and the Railway in the World will be a useful tool for scholars interested in the history of transport, travel, and urban change.

Book Virtual Immortality God Evolution and the Singularity in Post and Transhumanism

Download or read book Virtual Immortality God Evolution and the Singularity in Post and Transhumanism written by Oliver Krüger and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2021-10-31 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, ideas of post- and transhumanism have been popularized by novels, TV series, and Hollywood movies. According to this radical perspective, humankind and all biological life have become obsolete. Traditional forms of life are inefficient at processing information and inept at crossing the high frontier: outer space. While humankind can expect to be replaced by their own artificial progeny, posthumanists assume that they will become an immortal part of a transcendent superintelligence. Krüger's award-winning study examines the historical and philosophical context of these futuristic promises by Ray Kurzweil, Nick Bostrom, Frank Tipler, and other posthumanist thinkers.

Book Greek Rebetiko from a Psychocultural Perspective

Download or read book Greek Rebetiko from a Psychocultural Perspective written by Daniel Koglin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Greek Rebetiko from a Psychocultural Perspective: Same Songs Changing Minds examines the ways in which audiences in present-day Greece and Turkey perceive and use the Greek popular song genre rebetiko to cultivate specific cultural habits and identities. In the past, rebetiko has been associated chiefly with the lower strata of Greek society. But Daniel Koglin approaches the subject from a different perspective, exploring the mythological and ritual aspects of rebetiko, which intellectual elites on both sides of the Aegean Sea have adapted to their own world views in our age of globalized consumption. Combining qualitative and quantitative methods from ethnomusicology, ritual studies, conceptual history and music psychology, Koglin casts light on the role played by national perceptions in the processes of music production and consumption. His analysis reveals that rebetiko persistently oscillates between conceptual categories: it is a music both ours and theirs, marginal and mainstream, joyful and grievous, sacred and profane. The study culminates in the thesis that this semantic multistability is not only a key concept to understanding the ongoing popularity of rebetiko in Greece, and its recent renaissance in Turkey, but also a fundamental aspect of the human experience on the south-eastern borders of Europe.

Book Schuld und S hne 1

Download or read book Schuld und S hne 1 written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-10-11 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Cinema in Democratizing Germany

Download or read book Cinema in Democratizing Germany written by Heide Fehrenbach and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2000-11-09 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heide Fehrenbach analyzes the important role cinema played in the reconstruction of German cultural and political identity between 1945 and 1962. Concentrating on the former West Germany, she explores the complex political uses of film--and the meanings attributed to film representation and spectatorship--during a period of abrupt transition to democracy. According to Fehrenbach, the process of national redefinition made cinema and cinematic control a focus of heated ideological debate. Moving beyond a narrow political examination of Allied-German negotiations, she investigates the broader social nexus of popular moviegoing, public demonstrations, film clubs, and municipal festivals. She also draws on work in gender and film studies to probe the ways filmmakers, students, church leaders, local politicians, and the general public articulated national identity in relation to the challenges posed by military occupation, American commercial culture, and redefined gender roles. Thus highlighting the links between national identity and cultural practice, this book provides a richer picture of what German reconstruction entailed for both women and men.

Book Homemade Men in Postwar Austrian Cinema

Download or read book Homemade Men in Postwar Austrian Cinema written by Maria Fritsche and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2013-05-01 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the massive influx of Hollywood movies and films from other European countries after World War II, Austrian film continued to be hugely popular with Austrian and German audiences. By examining the decisive role that popular cinema played in the turbulent post-war era, this book provides unique insights into the reconstruction of a disrupted society. Through detailed analysis of the stylistic patterns, narratives and major themes of four popular genres of the time, costume film, Heimatfilm, tourist film and comedy, the book explains how popular cinema helped to shape national identity, smoothed conflicted gender relations and relieved the Austrians from the burden of the Nazi past through celebrating the harmonious, charming, musical Austrian man.

Download or read book Landmedien written by Clemens Zimmermann and published by StudienVerlag. This book was released on 2018-10-25 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Jahrhundert in verschiedenen europäischen Kontexten.

Book Screening Nostalgia

Download or read book Screening Nostalgia written by Alexandra Ludewig and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2014-03-31 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Heimat film genre, assumed to be outdated by so many, is very much alive. Who would have thought that this genre - which has been almost unanimously denounced within academic circles, but which seems to resonate so deeply with the general public - would experience a renaissance in the 21st century? The genre's recent resurgence is perhaps due less to an obsession with generic storylines and stereotyped figures than to a basic human need for grounding that has resulted in a passionate debate about issues of past and present. This book traces the history of the Heimat film genre from the early mountain films to Fatih Akin's contemporary interpretations of Heimat.
